I could probably go on for a long time… first all of the weapons are way too powerful. the lancer is being completely abused. im a gnasher guy but that things one shot body range is also ridiculous. The skill gap has been eliminated and it is being catered towards casual players with things like aim assist, bullet magnetism, stopping power, and movement nerf. the game itself feels very arcadish, not like other gears. the ranking system is very bad. i won a game in onyx 2 while getting mvp and lost 15 points. the lack of maps and characters at launch was egregious. the micro transactions even after they updated them are overpriced. the lag and ping are very bad. theres probably more but thats what i got for now
Terrible aim-assist.
Can’t even be classic characters.
No classic maps.
PC players abusing the wall-bounce.
Shooting mechanics feel like a different game.
Shoddy servers.
Terrible waiting times.
Excessive lag compensation.
Inconsistent weapon damage.
Longshot popshot ruined.
No in-game kick option when hosting.
Garbage micro transactions.
Obnoxious blood screen.
Broken kill cams.
Cartoon graphics.
Doesn’t even call itself Gears “of War” (and rightly so).
Long time Horde fan here with over 2000 hours in Gears 4 Horde. What in the world happened?
Menus are a disaster. Forced characters, forced skills, forced playstyle, I don’t even know who the hell is a Scout or Engineer at the lobby. I can’t play the HALO Reach characters because I prefer the Heavy Class and Sniper.
I can’t pick my skills and abilities, I literally just feel like a dude with a gun running around because the removal of Gears 4 features has made it feel clumsy and chaotic which has made teamwork difficult. Fortifications seem downgraded and somewhat useless now. The removal of weapons is a shame. What was wrong with the Horde from Gears 4? It’s the same engine. They literally had a great mechanic. All they had to do was keep it and add content. Don’t remove any weapons. Add some. Don’t remove any skills. Add some. Keep all the original fortifications and just add new one’s. Don’t remove the ability to play any character. Add some and keep classes. I feel conned to be honest. I just am not having any fun with Gears 5 at all. It makes Gears 4 look like the holy grail in comparison. I just can’t keep playing as JD. And to be forced too is a complete insult. The power system removes any and all teamwork. Now everyone is playing for themselves. Total disappointment and a waste of $80.00.
Some people want to play a special character. For me, the only reason I shelled out $80 was for the Reach character skins to use in Horde. But as a Heavy or Sniper. Now I’m forced to play as an Engineer or Scout.
And what this does is gives TC a profit motive. They can then sell you other Heavy or Sniper characters. Diversifying the chances of other people playing them. Encouraging you to buy them for that spot. It’s a foul tactic and one that should be discouraged completely. This whole game feels like a gutted version of Gears 4.
The maps are smaller and less innovative in comparison. I can’t play a single game without getting kicked from the servers and having to restart the game. Campaign was a joke and really quite boring/slow. Not a fan of the hyper colorized look they went with. I don’t play versus so I can’t say anything about that but I’ve read / played with people who do and they seem pissed at the changes TC made.
I basically cannot play the game because the Australian servers do not work, seriously all I can find a game in is quickplay arcade or classic and thats all.
Pros:
Aesthetically speaking, the game looks gorgeous for the most part. particularly in 4k/HDR.
They got rid of the scummy, garbage, cancer enducing RNG lootbox system that was present in Gears4. And regardless of the flaws Gears5’s current loot system may have (expensive store, not enough enticing rewards in the ToD), I’m glad they’re moving away from anything lootbox related.
The addition of the weapons is pretty cool. Sure the mace can use a bit of a nerf, but overall they add some freshness to the game.
Cons:
Generally speaking, the SP was a small step in the right direction compared to Gears4. However, it did come with its array of flaws. Extremely poor writing. Open world acts with unnecessary/uninteresting side quests that just slowed the pace of the story and only served to add longetivity to the SP. Little to no character development for some of the characters, oftentimes leaving you scratching your head as to wtf was TC smoking (see Fahz and JD).
Lack of maps from the start and even worst the speed at which they’re going to be adding more maps into the game. On top of that, the maps are extremely poorly designed and shows you where they want to take the game. Truly some of the worst in the franchise.
The continuous beatdown of the gnasher by the devs. We’re used to it by now, sure, and every single time most of us adapted, but who tf though it would be funny to remove the gnasher’s active, lower its clip size and make it so that you can only reload 3 slugs at a time? Don’t get me wrong, doesn’t make much of a difference to me, still slaying sh*t left and right, but again, you see where they want to take the game.
Aim assist/bullet magnetism. Sure, they said they’re addressing both of those things, but until then, ewww. ( No need for more clarification.)
Server issues/Bugs/Glitches/etc… There was a ton of them. There still are a ton of them. Need I say more?
Anyways, those are some of my pros/cons. Enjoy OP.
The essence, the rewarding feeling of a once competitive arena multiplayer, got ripped out so ignorantly, wrongfully, and worst of all stubbornly.
They showed us that they are not in touch with the core community.
Vids by @Z_i_i and @MasterAndChief, respectively
For horde the cons are that almost everything you hated in Gears 4 have been taken care of. Such as everyone taking power, everyone building, players using their strikes and Hammer of dawn constantly amongst other things.
I also like that they actually made some big changes to the horde mode that makes you change your game style compared to earlier releases. I would not have wanted an updated version of Gears 4, it is after all a new game.
Some negative stuff: I dont care at all about cosmetics and skins but the blood sprays and the banners are so unnecessary and useless that it feels kind of bad that those are the most common rewards. I would rather get more scrap so I could upgrade skill cards.
The maps in this game does not really do it for me like the maps in previous games but hopefully some of the upcoming maps is more fun.
I feel it is a bad “Gears” game. If it were just a third person shooter it would be fine and I would probably play from time to time.
However it is not a great Gears game. I think it is really sad that TC or maybe MS do not want to embrace what Gears is (in mp specifically) We are a unique game in the AAA space or we were.
The reason most of us have been here since 2006 and have such passion is because of the unique gunplay Gears delivers over the competition. It has never been a “casual” experience. And I’m not referring skill level per se. I am average at best, but the euphoria I get when seeing out a win or heaven forbid I get a clutch etc is immeasurable. NO OTHER game gives me the feeling, I’m sure I’m not alone and that feeling is magical. However we seem to be moving further and further away from that, and trying to “ape” Halo,CoD, et al.
It really seems that TC/MS are maybe somewhat embarrassed by Gears and its Legacy ? it was too dude-bro and now they want to bring it up to date, it wasn’t I’m just trying to get my head around what they might be thinking.
For what its worth, what is wrong with “dude-bro” and I say that as someone who is ok with the new crew and think Kait’s story is a good one. Also the best two characters in Gears (for me) are Myrrah and Sam.
You will hear me (if you read my posts) bang on and on…and on about Gears 3, but go back and play it and you will see why. Rod and his team should be made to play it for a month solid and see what a Gears game IS and also stop listening to esports players.
Honestly in versus everything is poorly made, this game was not made with versus in mind.
If you want constructiv criticism, in my last posts you can read how and why the Matchmaking, the ranking system, and the overall tuning of versus is bad.
Agreed, they prioritise Gears eSports over the rest of the entire playerbase. It’s a curse.
Gears 5 had potential if it just improved on Gears 4 rather than trying to almost change the entire games mechanics. There’s too much traditional things changed and at this stage, 6 games in, that’s nothing short of unacceptable.
The other thing is the sheer ignorance of the vast majority of fan’s feedback (the constructive posts…not the huge amount of offensive posts that showed up with most of the new members here following the games release). They ignore almost everything and change very minor things that are meaningless. Delivery Driver Mac’s time in the store was extended due to “popular demand”. Where? Who? Nobody asked for him. My point exactly, they’re selfish.
Rod has been here from the beginning, he should know better. That E3 Escape demo was the most disappointing Gears E3 show to date and everyone said so. How we can notice this and they can’t is crazy! I’m beginning to think there’s barely any Gears fans that work for TC. It doesn’t show.
This.
I’ve noticed it to. I feel like most, if not all of the employees at TC treat it like just another job and I bet hardly any of them take the time to play the game outside of their offices. I feel zero hype on their end whenever they post or announce something via social media. Only tiny bit of hype I feel from them is when they post something about esports, which let’s face it, most of us don’t really care nor follow.
I don’t know, maybe it’s just me I guess.
Very good point re how often do they just kick back and play Gears. I would hope they play it a lot, in reality I doubt many spend anytime outside of work. And lets be frank I would think to a lot of them it is simply a job. I’m not saying they are not passionate when working on it, but again it is just work pure and simple.
Who knows maybe in 12-18 months we can revisit and say that TC did deliver a great Gears game, I’m not going to hold my breath though.
As for Gears 6. That will likely be yet another step away from the formula.
I like the gameplay and appreciate arcade mode as actually like the riffle game aspect of the game without the shotguns rushing for you left right and centre.
Don’t get me wrong I love the shotgun and KOTH is my fav mode it’s just good to have variety in gameplay and I think TC have provided that with Versus.
I hate the fact that they’ve toned down the gore and have implemented banners and salutes and dance moves at the end of the game.
No you’re not alone. eSports-related events, characters and skins etc are all they get hyped for and I’m 110% sure it has absolutely nothing to do with the money being made from it.
There’s simply no passion or display of respect for long-term fans. It’s Gears’ equivalent of The Last Jedi. Rian Ferguson.
Gears in general is notorious for its high skill gap. It takes months and months and more arguably a lot of years to get to the level of some players.
It takes a lot of dying, a lot of trial and error to get anywhere near decent at gears.
Serious players who have spent hundreds/thousands of hours putting in the work to get to their skill level have essentially been given the shaft in Gears 5. Much of their skill has been rendered obsolete.
And it was on purpose.
Essentially, as has already been articulated point-by-point by people in this thread so I won’t rehash them, Gears 5 has alienated its dedicated Versus community and Horde community simultaneously in an attempt to change the formula and appeal to other communities playing other games. What has resulted, IMO, is a muddled direction that’s hard to buy into, for either core Gears fans who’ve gotten accustomed to the unique way the game is played or casual fans who’ve played the CoD-style/hero shooter style elsewhere but done better.
Most of the people here are likely going to be speaking from a “core Gears fan” perspective, and complain about how the changes have negatively influenced their experience. Versus isn’t fun for someone who likes classic Gears mechanics, and Horde isn’t fun for someone who likes classic Horde gameplay.
I’m afraid of change because it makes me angry and confused.
This! I knew something was seriously messed up when i played an inaugural 1v1 against a buddy. ive played gears since 2007 and have gained some serious skill along the way. i would call my self a very good player and definitely the best among my friends. My buddy who is not a very good player always jokingly talks smack and challenges me to 1v1’s to which i usually win 15-3 or something close to that. When we hopped on gears 5 and played it was apparent that the skill gap was gone. normal gears shotgun battle moves left me getting hard aim blasted from distance and led to alot of bs kills. i ended up adapting my play style and won but only like 15-11. it was pretty clear that this game was eliminating alot of the skill moves ive used for years and catering towards a lower skill level
