Yeh the skiff made me want to quit playing as it was so damn boring, I love the linear campaigns, yeh I won’t be buying 6,just gonna get on game pass.
Dead Space had tension and the fear of being outnumbered with limited ammo. Real horror tension. Gears never ever got close to that.
Sires the first time was the only time it got remotely close. I’ve never felt it was remotely tense and carried the 18 certificate because of the swearing and curb stomp executions.
Insane difficulty is where the horror’s at.
There’s nothing scary about Berserkers anymore. But Snatchers and Pouncers in close quarters? Puma pants
Tell me you didn’t feel true fear during Gears 4, Act III, “Do Not Go Gentle,” when juvies start pouring in from all directions. Especially on Inconceivable co-op, where one hit is an instakill, and juvies refuse to die.
Or worse yet, the body horror of seeing people dissolved in pods and knowing Marcus was on his way to that state. You might say “Oh, I knew he’d live,” but you didn’t know that the first time you played.
Just remember that the entire point of Gears is being badass enough and tough enough to kill anything the Locust/Swarm can throw at you (with small arms fire). The horror elements were never front and center, all that horror was just flavor and youthful naivety. We’re Gears! We make the monsters scared of us.
Wtf that’s way better than what we have now tbh LMAO
I wonder how many people were disappointed with the skiff when they realised the turret was just a navigation tool. I know was.
I was mainly disappointed by the lack of enemy and NPC patrols, ambushes, and snipers in the open world.
Yeh, I could of imaged the swarm putting together scraps from an old UIR tank.
And despite lack of patrols they always managed to beat you to every location.
Bear in mind that Dead Space (at least the first two games) were solo affairs. It’s kind a hard to build up a scary atmosphere in a squad based shooter unfortunately. Also with survival horror it usually takes you a while to get destructive weapons. At first it’s just a pistol-style peas hooter so you feel vulnerable as well. GOW gives you all kinds of weapons from the off, like a rifle with a chainsaw attached to it.
I don’t think I’d classify what Gears of War has is ‘horror’. There are moments of great tension for Marcus and the player but nothing to the levels of most horror games. It may have ‘horrific’ moments but never enough to classify the game as such.
What gave Gears its scare factor was its forboding atmosphere. Gears 1 and 2 were able to maintain it well. Gears 3 less so however and 4 even less.
In Gears quiet moments are meant to build some tension, but also advance plot, establish setting, etc.
But the game never let you forget that the locust were everywhere. It was a grim tone the games set. Characters were kept on their toes.
Alot of what makes Gears 4 lack this tension is a lack of these. It isn’t without it but it is executed less than stellar.
its been gone since gears 1/2
maybe they should add the xenomorphs from ALIENS … so it could be more horrific in that sense ?
If they added a Swarm creature that looked both intimidating, was very deadly and could not be killed through conventional means… then they might have something. But hard to be really that scared of something beyond an initial period after first encountering it when you can just throw bullets and explosives at the problem.
I do agree in both of your points .
First its hard to be scared of something when you have that amount of firepower in Gears 5 , I mean you have the freedom lancer , the longhost and heavy killer weapons… so it would take a large amount of creativity to create something really horrifyng.
and at second I think more enemy variety could help without a doubt @AmicableWall421 its growing kind of tiring at killing the same robots and monsters all the time.
I wonder if you agree with me.
Momma Corpser would like to have a word with that statement.
And I mean the too close for comfort Gears 3 encounter when you didn’t have a big ol’ tank to blow the face off from the Corpsers.
Very good point. We’re coming up on Jason vs Freddy now
Think one of the problems is the over reliable cog gear.
For example the Niles lab. You got the dozen corpses that have been cryod for years. Yet you pry out perfectly working lancers.
Well, you know, when it actually works as it is intended to…
what the f…
Gears of war was darker and has a lot of gore.
Gears 4 and 5 are not gore at all.
