I remember Rod trying to sell it to us. But I have a feeling that was from pressure from above, maybe CEO, Tim Sweeney, Alienating their fan base be damned, I think Epic felt they’d sell more copies if they made the game more like Cod (One primary gun loadout, changing Koth to the Cod version of the time whatever it was called with the 3 simultaneous hills) and Halo (red vs Blue; human soldier vs soldier). They knew they were on their way out and probably wanted to put the least work into it: B-rate talent of subsidiary studio, People Can Fly (no disrespect but just not same level as top Epic talent). That’s probably why Rod and Cliffy jumped ship. They saw where things were going. They weren’t around when Judgment dropped as I recall, only part of the dev cycle.

Until just before the launch actually. They stealthily tested servers in Gears 2 mp.
This was the time Epic got bought up by Tencent as well.

Gears 1 kinda fluked the multiplayer. Yet it worked and it worked well. Better than they expected.
But Cliffy B didn’t actually like it. He wanted to change the successful formula.
Which made no sense. Why change something that isn’t broke and works great, just because you don’t like it or it didn’t come out the way you envisioned.

Yea apparently a new Japanese company took over epic aswel and they didn’t listen to rod and cliff so they left and then they just scrapped gears, here’s an interesting fact for ya”ll Cliffy helped make fortnite before he left epic games but he still to this day doesn’t get a penny from fortnite
