It was so dark I think they were trying to get the player ready for the other big sad part in the game
I don’t know how to really articulate it. I had always known that GOW was dark, gritty and characters will die (as Anthony and Minh had, as well as several other very minor characters) from playing the first game. I think alot of it came from the mystery of the Locust and not knowing what they did to human captives and what “processing” was. I remember at the time when I first saw that cutscene, I was expecting a mini-boss fight with Tai, who I thought was broken so badly that he would attack Marcus.
I hadn’t even made the connection with Maria’s death (I’m not going to say spoiler alert given it’s over 10 years ago now!
)! Looking back, yeah, it makes total sense from Dom’s perspective. He saw the state of Tai, who chose to end his life and after the initial shock of finding Maria in that state too he knew what he had to do.
I’m expecting Op 4 to be heavily focused on new maps. 2 new and one remake would be a good start compared to what we’ve been getting, but honestly I think it should be even more, like maybe 2 new and 2 remakes. I’d be ok with 3 maps tho.
As for characters, I personally don’t care who we get as long as they are well rounded and fun to use in Arcade/Escape/Horde.
I’m mainly looking forward to new Maps, the new Ranking system, and the big changes coming to the Hero system/PVE.
Yeah I’m expecting 1 new map based on what they said in a recent dev stream. It takes 6 months to go from concept to release for new maps. They work on 3 or 4 new maps at a time. Staggered release means 1 new map per Operation starting with OP2. We got Allfathers and Pahanu so far which is great.
Do not get your expectations high. Medium to low level and you will be fine.
For me, i am hoping for. You know what, never mind, keeping my expectations low. Some crappy Skins and reworked maps from Gears of War, Gears of War 2, Gears of War 3, Gears of War Judgement and Gears of War 4. Maybe a Firebird Banner, or is that raising my expectations to high ???
Sofia could still be alive. There is no (as far as i know) definative proof she is dead, or alive. She was kidnapped by what is described, by the CoG. For all we know she could be in an institution somewhere being re-educated. For what, no idea.
I for one would love to see the return of her, and for certain a goodie, and definately not a baddie. Hopes and dreams, eh !!!
Even if alive she’d be older by now. Minimum 25 years older. Not the same as in Judgement. Plus, TC would have some more character building to do there cause J sure as hell didn’t do much of it.
Probably more likely to just see her in MP modes.
I mean at this point I couldn’t care less about skins and characters.
Get me a working tier system, more than one VS map, and I’ll be happier than a pig in sh*t.
Dom and Paduk
2-3 Swarm/Locust
2-3 COG characters for PvP
1 new map, 1 remake
More weapon tuning
PVE balancing
I doubt the Carmines will be PVE ready when Op4 releases. I think Op5 is when the extra maps start coming. I look for more characters for PVP. Obviously weapon tuning and finally get the PVE balancing update they’ve been teasing. The new ranking system and PVE rework won’t be until Op5.
They’ll release more characters at the halfway point of Op4 and we may see the Carmines playable in Horde/Escape around this time. I really think Op4 was locked down months ago and you won’t really see the big changes until the next Operation.

1? After all the feedback and their comments about increasing map production? Nah, there’s no way Operation 4 only ships with one new map. Then basically nothing changed.
I expect a minimum of 2 new maps for Operation 4.

It might be Kait in escape op 4 since she’s getting a Hive Buster’s skin tommorow.
But Fahz in escape is something I want because he’d be OP
I don’t think that the Hivebuster skin for her is an indication of Kait coming to Escape, Octus mentioned(on Twitter, mind you) they didn’t want to hold the skin back due to their revision of the hero approach to PvE characters. But unless it’s a thing they can already bring with Operation 4, I’d say it’s likely we can see Kait in Escape then… but I would not get your hopes up. They’ll probably bring Del in with maybe some extra cards so he doesn’t completely suck as his main focus is technically being an engineer rather than a hybrid like Baird(who also brings the very destructive DR-1 with him and not just two Trackers that maybe will blow up a Drone or some Juvies) cause he’s easier to “balance”.
Hindsight is 20/20
Hopefully she’s in op 4 escape.
I know what hope has gotten me in this game so far. Mainly disappointment because changes and/or the good stuff simply aren’t/isn’t as quick as I’d hoped for. So I’ve dialed it down in favor of cautious optimism with a spray of realism/pessimism. At least that way actual surprises or good anmouncements are… well, better than just expectations.
New Maps!!!
New Maps!!!
Operation 4 minimum - 2 New Maps, 1 New Remake
Operation 4 ideal - 2 New Maps, 2 New Remakes
What will most likely happen - 1 New, 1 New Remake
To clarify, when I saw New Remake, I mean a map that wasn’t brought back in Gears 4. A new remake, like River or Azura.
Just to chime in with what I would love to see (but which almost certainly won’t happen):
- Anthony, Benjamin and Gary all playable in Horde and Escape.
- Paduk added to all modes (PVP and PVE).
- Locust Grenadier and Skorge added as Villains.
- Two more COG Heroes (like Dom, May, Sam, Dizzy etc) teased as mid-Operation characters who will be added to PVP, with intention to be playable by Op 5.
- Three maps for Horde and Versus - two new designs and one remake.
- Horde Frenzy added to private custom games.
- Guardian returns to ranked.
- One of the Horde-only characters to be playable in Escape (Kait, Fahz, JD etc).
Do I expect too much? I dunno if “expect” is the right word. “Dream” might be closer to the truth but it would restore my faith in TC massively.
