THIS WEEK IN GEARS 5: Aug 4 - Aug 10

For whatever reason TC often rolls out weekly changes at different times, ie leaderboard rewards, the store and playlist updates don’t all change together.

The 1gp for a kill has made the bloated gold rank even worse now, you need to be able to earn your buy in without winning!

Bleeding / freezing barriers should’ve been kept in. Custom lobbies specifically state what’s going down. Don’t like, don’t join. Half the XP or something instead. People still have fun either way.

Agreed. When I was entering a lobbie I always asked if they where interested in Grace bloody barrier. One time only I was told no and I picked a different character. They could have kept those by just increasing the price in Energy or limiting the number that can be created. What I don’t like about the change to Grace, we had to pay for the character and they removed the only reason she was accepted in master and did not give anything in return. I would have been happy with a couple of new card to make her viable in master run in Escape / Horde. No need for super powerful new card, just good enough to not be kick out automatically on the hardest difficulty.

People earn more XP when those Barriers aren’t killing enemies.

Technically the person making the barriers earned a ton though ;).

That’s it. Just MVP’s. 50 waves. Then we have up to four other characters, looking for a way to get headshots, executions and ribbons. More difficult to do so with Barriers spread around. Unless a Marcus was around for many headshots.

Or JD on boss waves.

I’m a little confused about whether I like ribbon xp or not. I like rewards for playing well, but in a team game the rewards should be equal I think.

I remember back to letting people upgrade sentries in Gears 4, so they could get some kills and xp.

Seems like it would be easier to just give everyone the same and save ribbon rewards for versus.

Just a thought.

It’d be so much simpler if TC just reinstated multi-kill ribbons in PvE. What was so wrong with them that they had to be removed? Too easy to get? Players would not actually have to go ribbon chasing to get a proper amount of them, the horror! Something in the game would actually not be a grind!

I am not sure about this. This would mean completing Horde matches fast = more XP. So basically Speed Runs would be fastest way. And they require more players like 5 players. Not everyone likes to join SR. I was okay doing it solo, and Horde would take too long doing solo. Getting to 50 was done solo too.

Still don’t see the problem, boss.

Again, custom lobbies specifically state what is gonna happen. Them lobbies fill up sharpish. Let folk have fun but half XP across the board, ribbons etc.

Thank you, The Coalition.

Next step to save the Engineer is to restrict the Fabricator to level 1. This will please me too.

Engineers, who are primary builders in the game, do not get bonuses such as these. So why should others.
In fact i played hell when Baird had the Bleeding Barriers thing, and he is my favourite character. Unbalance the game, and somehow it is not as fun and challenging. Also, i hated to see Barriers stacked vertically, and loads of them. It was messy, and wasted Energy.

Why? I mean, I get it if too many are in one spot, that is overkill. But putting them that way makes enemies take longer to go through, which makes it easier for teammates to shoot them. With no bleed barrier involved, it’s not an issue, is it?

See, this is part of the circle of problems we have seen in Horde since release.

At first, people didn’t like being forced to play a match with 5 different characters. They also complained that the Engineer (Del) was the only character that could build all fortifications.
However, everyone wanted (needed) Del in order to be successful.

Then came Baird and his bleeding barriers glitch. Everyone jumped on the Baird band wagon because it was such a big advantage in matches. Nobody wanted Del, because he was just an engineer.

Then we get Lizzie with her freezing barriers. This is the new Meta. What’s that, why not pair Baird’s bleed barriers with Lizzie’s freeze barriers and control the entire match. So Baird and Lizzie hid in a corner for 50 waves after no more barriers were needed.

Still, everyone scoffed at the idea of using Del.

Then Paduck gets bleed barriers, and everyone can purchase any item they want from the fabricator. This is great, but most players hold on to their power and use it to buy what they want with no regard for the team, with no regard to power cost. “Let’s see. I want a weapons locker first for all my character specific weapons. Then I will use all my power to build up my perks”.

Because I rarely have time to play 50 consecutive waves, I will join games in progress, usually around wave 25-30. At least 75% of the time I enter, I see everyone has their own level 4 weapons locker, maybe 4-6 level 1/2 barriers, and 1 sentry. Of course they have their perks maxed out, but it doesn’t matter. They get destroyed by wave 35 because they have no defenses.

With the changes made this week, people won’t know what to do. They will now need to rely on an Engineer class to help them succeed. "What? It’s wave 32 and we have no power to buy a barrier? I sure wish we would have started with a Del and a Jack ".

I know what some of you are going to say: "Don’t play with randoms. They suck. Get a solid group of friends together and play. You’ll see the difference. Well no ■■■■. Of course you will see a difference when a group learns to play together .

My point is, over the course of the last year, we have gone full circle. To be successful in the higher level of difficulties we will definitely need a well built engineer, and in many cases, Jack.

Not sure if it was intentional but Grace’s Blunt Instrument card doesn’t apply bleeding damage to anything now. She only has 8 cards and now 1 of them doesn’t work at all.

With some Engineers getting bad reputations for spamming Barriers, you can actually sit there and say

Sometimes i just do not get you. Are you actually saying you like people spamming barriers, just to make it easier for you, oh, and your team.
Do not get me wrong on this, an easy game is all good and all, but is the game supposed to offer some challenge.
I always build 2 lines of Barriers, in two separate parts, it is enough, and always has been enough, even on Inconceivable.

Personally i hate the whole vertical Barrier spamming sessions, i hate it when people overly make the game too easy for themselves. Balance is fun in this game. Get it right, and you will be happy for hours, days and even months.
Making it too easy, gets boring, and you are lucky to last minutes. Unless of course you have no imagination, or feelings whatsoever, and go for it. make the game so easy, you hardly ever have to do anything. Where is the fun in that ???

I have no issue with barriers being put vertical. It just slows enemies down more, and does not require spamming barriers. Either way I’d just leave it up to the player how they want to place their barriers(unless it’s a horribly bad placement job). You know what I personally dislike? When someone else takes all the kills, especially using something like Marcus’ self sustaining auto aim headshots which is practically a brain dead activity. Not because of some scoreboard envy or whatever but because it’s not fun for pretty much everyone else or those who don’t like that. It only took me 17 waves of one match to realize Marcus with auto aim headshots killing everything before your shots get many chances to reach targets is absolutely stinking boring. It’s basically watching the game play itself. Not fun at all.

So yeah… no more Marcus games for me. Still find it ridiculous you have to ban characters from joining your lobbies just to have fun.

I am guessing the comment about Marcus was not meant for me, as i have never banned players choice of character in any of my games.
Killjoys and glory hoggers are not the most likeable people in this game, or any game, but you will get them anyway.

My Son told me once he hated playing with me, or against me in Call of Duty, as i had a knack for Camping. I would hide, and kill when the opportunity presented itself. I had no problem Shotgunning someone in the back as they ran or walked by. I also would watch two people fight and steal a kill. Only in Call of Duty though.
Halo is a different ball game to me.
Gears is something special, even over Halo, which was for a long time my ultimate go to game. Halo 4 killed Multiplayer, Halo 5 just made it boring. Gears 5, is a good all rounder, even with its problems. OP 4 though, more good has come from it than bad, it is just that my bad is really bad.

Barriers wise, i have to agree with you, as long as they are not spamming, i suppose it does not matter where they are placed, as long as they serve their purpose. Not sure if it is my Autism, or my OCD, but i hate Barriers placed the wrong way (for me that is).
