The Gnasher Meta Is Not Fun

Been debating on starting a thread on this for a while, but I’ve honestly just had enough. I enjoy most aspects of Gears 5, but after the last two Gnasher updates, I have not had as much fun. Right now, the meta is hard aim from a distance to get poke damage, and then get in close for the one shot. All well and good, except if you don’t have someone hurt before trying to gib them, they will likely sponge the shot for 84% damage from what feels like point blank range, even if you land all of your pellets. I find it harder and harder to fight multiple enemies at once because you basically have to have your barrel inside someone to get a gib. I feel less incentivized to even get in close anymore.

In my opinion, the February gnasher update felt perfect, and I wish they would go back to something similar. Here are two examples from today where I’ve hit every pellet from point blank range, and nothing:

The first clip I can maybe see why I didn’t get a one-shot, as he was moving away, but the second one, not so much. Maybe I’m crazy or I just suck, but I feel like I’m shooting marshmallows most of the time.

Yup. Keep these threads rolling. This gnasher needs to be reverted asap. It’s the worst gnasher we’ve had from TC yet. I’m with you. February’s gnasher was prob the closest thing to perfect. Gnasher battles were happening. Felt great. Gib range is too far again and they adjusted the poke range.

I feel like you were just a step away from gib range in the first shot, but the second clip…yea, they both should’ve been gibs.

What doesn’t make sense to me is how the first clip I was probably a step away, but hit him for 85%, and in the second clip, my barrel was probably about 3 feet away from center mass and I only hit him for 86%. The second clip happens far too often, and in the heat of the moment, situations like clip number 1 make you feel like you got cheated unless you go back and watch it in slow motion.

I wish i understood why these situations are so common, but it really feels like a coin toss most of the time in a gnasher fight.

We’ve discussed this a lot in the past but I haven’t had a chance to speak with you regarding this latest tuning update. I’m noticing that I’m getting a lot of 86% on clear gib hits ever since this update and distance doesn’t seem to be a consistent factor. This game has never been perfect but as far as the Gnasher goes this is the worst one yet for one reason or another.

I just don’t understand the point of creating a weak, inconsistent Gnasher while nerfing movement, buffing the Lancer and removing flashbangs. Everything they did was to make the Gnasher less desirable which then turns this game into something other than a Gears game. Every weapon has a place – rifles should be great at crossing. But you can’t slow the game down, buff the rifle and then mess up the Gnasher in order to do so.

I agree. Speaking of movement, they should go back to when it was like this:

It’s pretty much impossible to strafe like this in the current state of the game. The cover-slip feels incredibly slow, and I always feel like I’m getting hit no matter how much I mix strafing and wallbouncing. I think it has less to do with my skill with regards to movement, and more to do with how much slower the game feels than in previous TUs. I don’t know if they actually tweaked the overall speed of the game (cover-slip boost aside), but it sure feels like it.

It certainly feels like the overall speed was reduced but I can’t say for sure. I definitely noticed the slip-boost immediately and it’s hurting my skill level.

I have been having success with popping some rounds of lancer or pistol first, before switching to gnasher before they close range. Weapon swaps were increased a little and it helps. Made me think that maybe that’s the point, to get people to swap weapons in the heat of the fight more.

They went back on months of progress and buffed the lancer because the game is going free to play for 6 days.

Seriously…

This past week has been an awful experience online. 80% of my deaths have come from the hands of bot walkers gibbing me from 10ft away… Or getting quadruple lancered down from 40 shot lancers.

All this progress TC has been making since launch has all been thrown out the window in one update. Oh, but don’t worry. They’ll fix it by May, we’ll readjust to that, only for them to change it again a month later. Repeat this process till Gears 6

Anyone notice ryan leaves and they revert back to this trash?

Based on this operation and previous ones it’s almost like bad code sneaks into the update. They often break things in a similar fashion that they had been previously broken. Look at the way the servers operate after every title update.

I wouldn’t put this on Ryan leaving by any means. Let’s not forget he was at the helm for the beginning of Gears 5 as well. I don’t think the community knows what it wants entirely. Rather it’s based off of a feeling of where the Gnasher should be. Personally I thought it was at its best the update prior to the long-poke we had last time.

Lol they always go a bit too far don’t they? A whole 10 bullets extra for the lancer is a lot. I could honestly settle for 5, right in the half way mark. I’d be okay with it.

Same with the gnasher. I didn’t see complaints for the gnasher after February’s update and then they adjusted the poke range and increased gib distance essentially almost eliminating shotgun battles again. I see players waiting to shoot just to get up close and one shot. It’s rlly boring gameplay. It feels terrible. Judging that one shot distance is dice roll unless you’ve studied it in college and adjusted for different lag compensations lol. With February’s update they closed it in and increased poke damage which meant there was less instances of rolling a dice for a gib. Lots more shotgun battles and strafing and the occasional close up gibs if you were almost full red you’d try and maneuver inward to get a gib.

As of right now it’s just gibs and random garbage and needs to be changed as soon as possible.

Actually according to Octus they didn’t increase the gib range in TU5.

Unless ofc they screwed something up without realizing it

Could be the poke range adjustment then making it feel that way, maybe mixed with some lag. Either way, the gib range could still do with a slight range nerf. And put the poke adjustment back to what it was.

I agree with that

Lowkey jealous, I’ve not been able to strafe like that for a few updates now, something they did a while ago now has me waiting a full second before my roadie run animation even begins, so its impossible to roadie stafe as it just takes way too long for the toon to get moving.

I’m hopeful that itll get fixed as now the problem seems to be more wide spread.

100% agree.

Bot walking is absurdly effective right now.
