The Gears Pop Community needs more help from The Coalition / MediaTonic

I don’t feel like this update has addressed the issue that most of the player base has.

Early estimates of this game suggested that it would take several years of being a Free-to-Play gamer to finish the game off. This is unsurprising, as most free-to-play games use this model to support longevity of the game. But this also creates the major problem facing the community.

With the reveal of shutdown, gamers were left with months to try and finish off any goals in the game. At the same time, microtransactions were also shut down. Effectively, all players became ‘free’ players at this point. The only real changes made was that Thumpers were made limitless, but nothing else was done to reflect the game change.

Basically, players had to cram excess play into the final months, which is possible for few, but not most. While other Gears of War titles have goals to progress, they all are still playable. This title has a deadline, but nothing was done to accelerate that.

Only now, 2 months out, there was a boost to XP and Pin cost. But no changes to Pin drops were made. This means that most of the requirements have not been changed.

One of the biggest issues was the lack of change to Gold, and the store pricing. The cost of Gold is done to increase the potential of spending. But this cannot be done now. The Gold pricing model should have been changed to reflect this. Gold has two uses; either buying Coins or Crates. Both are useful in letting players decide which path to follow in progress. You have Coins but need Pins? Buy the Crates to get Pins. Or take the other direction to get Coins to ensure progression.

This is where the updates need to be focused. Hordes need to be giving out way more Pins and Gold as a reward. The Gold pricing needs to be dramatically reduced, reflecting the games years lifespan being compressed into months (now 2 remaining).

Currently, the Horde Event is Coin Fortune. This Thumper is the most underwhelming of the Thumpers. Long Horde fights that result in paltry Coin return and no Pins. The Coin amount should be greatly increased and a high amount of Gold should be added to it to make it reflect the time and difficulty of it, when compared to other Horde Thumpers.

The other Horde Thumpers can be finished far quicker, give more Coins for time spent, and offer Pins, which are needed for progression. It shows how little Coin Fortune gives for the time it takes.

But you also need to change the requirement for Gold League. Previously, the amount of COGs needed was lower, raised prior to the notice of shutdown. If the amount can be increased, it also must be able to be dropped. As has been pointed out, boosting player XP puts them at a disadvantage with their weaker Pins. Lower players will not be able to excel in Ranks, basically crippling them. They need to upgrade to advance, but upgrading Pins actually hurts their matchmaking position and success; it’s a massive Catch-22.

I don’t know how to fix this. I respect not just giving people a win, but I also don’t know the point in dragging out the race. Holding this over players makes sense when the goal is to get money from buying content or ensuring players keep working to get better or stronger, but, bluntly, this has no point anymore. Come May 1st, all of our Pins have no value. Player level means nothing. The game is gone.

You basically should be considering how to make this game finishable if you literally started the day before the notice of shutdown. Any player that tried to join into this game at that point is caught in a struggle of lost time that they believed they had to progress. Grinds need to be reduced, rewards need to be amplified. Years are crunched into months, the game progression needs to reflect this.

I appreciate that MediaTonic is trying to do something in the final months of this game (which is more than other companies do in these situations), but this minor update really didn’t address the issue of a vastly compressed deadline that uses the pricing and ranking from the yearly model.

I really hope they’re able to make these needed changes, as clearly most of the community of players still won’t be able to finish this game in the 2 months remaining.

re: Gold League.

People requesting this be lowered do not understand how the leagues work.

At the beginning of each season, everyone is reset to 1 cog below bronze. No matter how far they reduce it, this will still occur.

Players progressively push up over the month and slowly work their way through the leagues. Most players will play casual for the majority of the month, and make a late push upwards in the last 2 days of each season. This will still occur.

Reducing the requirements will not assist anyone in obtaining gold league.

The casual button is more at fault for players running into the wall of level 19/20 players when on the cusp of gold, not the cog totals themselves.

re: Players being under levelled and being smashed. It is actually the opposite. As has been pointed out above you, level 16 players are running around with level 19 pins as an example.

If players think about what they are doing, and upgrade their pins in a smart fashion, they will have the same experience - ie: Until you are ready to rank up to level 20, do not upgrade any pin that is not in your main PVP team or your Brumak/Thunderland teams. By doing this, you keep your overall rank relatively low, whilst ensuring you can compete particularly in PVP.

re: Making the game completeable and this being a “minor update” - They have just reduced the requirements to complete the game to 25% of what I had to obtain to complete the game. This has been in no way a “minor update” - That is a significant reduction in requirements, and one that has been welcomed by those who are actually spending the time to complete the game.

re: Max Pin. Max Pin is not as hard as people make it out to be, IF they put time into playing the game. Even with the reduction in upgrade cost, and doubling of XP values, players will still either reach, or get close to the 1 single max common they need by grinding through horde, and ensuring they max out the 75 omens in the bi-weekly (They should make these every week) PVP events.

Yes coin fortune event is garbage and they should take it off the rotation. But your answer here is - Don’t play it. Spend an hour or two grinding Brumaks and Thunderlands, and a crappy event doesn’t really matter so much. Infinite thumpers were a thing since before the shutdown notice, people have had 3 months since the shutdown notice to get in and do some grinding of horde.

End of the day, these changes have made it possible for people to complete the game with a much smaller amount of time and effort required than before. They have rewarded players putting the effort in without giving a handout to those who are not.

The devs have done a great job here, despite the complaints of those who refuse to put the effort in to complete the game.

Fortunately is a discussion board so people can continue to discuss what they’d like and ask for help.
With then saying they will review it in a few weeks etc, there’s plenty of chance for them to hear the voices of people who might be struggling, despite putting hundreds and hundreds of hours into the game.

Sure. Just know how greedy it looks.

Heck, I put several hundred DOLLARS in it. I should get all the achievements too.

The good thing with a review in a few weeks is that hopefully by then we see alot more unlocks on the achievements from people actually playing the game.

Those who have in 15 months only made it to level 15 to date despite having played since launch - ie: Have done nothing to help themselves since the shutdown announcement, obviously won’t have unlocked any achievements, but that’s their own fault.

Good thing I’ve made it to 17, so maybe I can be considered as worthy.

If you’ve made it to lvl 17 then you should have no trouble finishing out the game with the new changes that they have made.

Without the handout you are looking for.

My post isn’t just about me though, it’s about ‘the people’. The masses. Who deserve the chance (in my opinion) to get that opportunity to achieve it. (They don’t deserve it in your opinion. I get that).

700 commons a day for my best pin to reach 20.
More (loads more in some cases) for the others.
Brumak has 16 commons available to it. You get what 250 odd per run, spread across all of them. I’ve done about 40-50 of them today to get about enough of it for today’s quota. That’s the most I will ever fit in a day as I normally don’t have the hours available I did today.

Obviously to some, I’m not ‘serious enough’ about the game if I’ve only done that many. But each to their own.

Correct. They have drastically reduced the games requirements as it is, I’m yet to see anyone who completed the game under the original requirements complain about that either.

It’s called an “achievement”. not a “give me a merit badge for starting the game” award

The original 8 hour a day requirement was based on coins being the problem. Not dupe pins. Anyone who has finished the game or is close will tell you that. By drastically reducing the xp requirements and the upgrade cost, they have largely removed that barrier, whilst leaving in place the need to actually play the game to obtain the pins.

They have struck the perfect balance between helping people, and not just handing out the completion.

700 commons a day… You’d need about 40 runs per day to get there. You either want to put the time in to complete, and at a fraction of the effort some of us put in, or you don’t.

“The masses” - There is a handful of gamers who don’t want to put in the effort who are complaining. Looking at my crew for example, people who had no hope of finishing really do now have a second wind as these changes have made them they believe they can get there.

Hopefully the devs do not listen to this outspoken minority of complainers and don’t hand them the completion without the work.

It doesn’t seem like we are a minority though. Its the same people on here who have already completed it who are knocking everyone asking for help down.

Same in this thread https://www.trueachievements.com/forum/viewthread.aspx?tid=1260632
Majority means the most.

To be clear I am level 15 because I haven’t upgraded my pins yet. If I did I would be mid level 18. Am I now worthy of you not saying I want a handout?

I will play as much as I can and ill say it again even if I feel like a broken record but some of us cannot commit to the hours required in the time left. We are not saying we don’t want to grind the hours required, its that we cannot.

Even 2x the amount of pins in a crate or 50% off the pins required to upgrade is still 100s of hours. Those who want a handout still won’t get the achievements but those who are willing to grind the time they can will do more easily without sacrificing personal lives, family time and mental health.

Mental Health. lol

If you are able to get to level 18, and still believe you won’t make max dupes, the truth of the matter is you aren’t playing enough.

A max common came LONG before people got even remotely close to finishing the game.

The TA thread you reference, is infested with people who haven’t played the game, one complainer not that long ago only just unlocked “play 150 pins in vs” despite having had the game since launch. This is your “majority”

Yes, there is a minority of complainers who won’t put the work in.

There is more gamers in my crew alone who are working their guts out to get the achievements done, at similar levels to yourself.

Put the work in and you’ll get the pins and the completion. Don’t, and you won’t.

Wouldnt say we were arguing…I wouldn’t say I have argued with anyone in this thread. Different viewpoints sure.

Just people coming to a spot we could agree as a reasonable change for the achievement during speculation on the update.

My reasonable estimate for what i viewed as fair…

Not so far off from what they actually did. Roughly 75% reduction from original requirements.

Hey everyone,

Just a reminder that the post mentioned the following

We will monitor the impact of these changes closely and will make updates, as needed in the coming weeks.

I’ll try to summarise all the feedback posted here and elsewhere and feed that back to the team to see what can be done, I hope this helps!

No worries. Thought that might have been the case!

The update was good for so many players, but maybe a better value for crystals.

You can’t buy them and getting them is really slow. Almost 15 crystals on weekdays, 5 on weekends.

Some players paid for getting bundles of crystals while others just got them from Daily rewards. I have almost 9000 crystals waiting to be spend.

I’ll change them for coins at the end of February, even getting 2.500.000 coins I can’t reach lvl 20 yet, so I’m just waiting if there will be a better pack to change with crystals or more coins.

I doubt it, but who knows

You already have the max pin achievement, so your focus now should be on upgrading the lowest pins for that glorious XP. You won’t be far off once you’ve spent that 2.5 million coins

To be fair, I agree with Wriggy.

Once you have a single maxed pin. There’s a lot less of an ordeal to get to 20 too.

Appreciate you looking out Kilo.
Keep us updated as and when you can, or have anything if note.

I won’t go on again about why I think pins are still an issue as it’s written all over the thread,
But thanks for all the help and updates so far!
