So Anthony and Benjamin (and that other one from4 with nothing more than the Carmine name and no elaboration or backstory whatsoever) finally arrive in Gears 5 but as a result of TC genius and brilliant decision to create heroes and abilities they are released for Versus only for now. But to truly highlight the insult and the laziness. Go into the character selection and look at Ben and Anthony. Every scratch, every crack in the armour is identical to one another.
TC didn’t even put in the effort to make armour for two characters they just used one model for both and changed the helmet and pouches.
Pretty sure they did the same thing in 4, however with 5 having made us wait so long and then delivering lazy design that is locked to one mode. Whereas when you look at Anthony and Ben in 1,2 and 3 they are clearly different people with different armour and different battle damage that we didn’t have to wait so long for only to be insulted.
Think its time i accept that if i want a good Gears experience i gotta wait for 6, as imo 5 is a lost cause
I can guarantee that the only difference between them in Gears 1 and 2 is the helmet. I’m not opposed to them having different battle damage but originally they were the exact same.
I find it quite the opposite. The Carmines have never been more faithfully done well like this in a long time. Anthony, Benjamin, Clayton, Gary, and Lizzie are some of the best in multiplayer right now imo and especially true when you have a squad of 5. Oh no Benjamin has the same armor scratch as Anthony above his left kneepad. That doesnt really bother me in the slightest. I’m very happy their personalities are kept intact and are different from one another. Something even Epic Games were guilty of messing up. I don’t see laziness here.
Yep, and as a matter of fact, back then they were actually all just Kim with a helmet on.
Yes after firing up Gears 1 and 2 i see what you mean. I can’t get a close up of Anthony and Benjamin in Gears 3 to check the battle damage and Gears 3 was actually fantastic with their design work but i find it hard to criticise the OG trilogy as much as i do 5 due to the fact that Gears yet been purchased by Microsoft and the TC given every dollar and resource they could ever need and also they were working with an XB1 and an XB1xwhen making 4 and 5 as oppose to the quite limiting 360. I think its lazy for Epic or TC to both copy and paste a model, change the helmet and call it a different character , specially when them characters are the same voice actor. Its just so much more noticable on my XB1s and the laziness is more prominent.
Its kinda annoying to call it lazy.
What back story do you want? Play gears 1-4 to get their story.
They made extra Carmine skins (never have been done before besides the zombie variant in 4) that look badass and character dialogue between the carmines is great.
They’ve been dropping all this for free.
They are dropping it now so PvP players have new skins. They already said they have a solution to allow players to play with horde but will announce it when finalized.
Pretty dumb to feel “insulted” because not every pixel is to your high expectations.
Just enjoy the game.
sorry dude but thats not how the gaming industry works, making a new model instead of reusing old ones is a waste of time, other companies would do the same thing not just TC, unless you jump over to a new engine, there is no point in making whole new models.
its common practice in the gaming industry to reuse as much as you can to save time
That’s the thing about Gary. He HAS no story. He’s just called Carmine, shoots a Kestrel and Condor down, then gets smacked in the face by a drop pod. If somehow he did survive that, the Swarm probably got him afterwards. Gears 5 has literally done more for the character with his description in the customization menu than Gears 4 did in its Campaign.
With regards to why they have the same model, its pretty common in the industry to reuse assets when you don’t have to make a whole new one.
Being that the Carmines are meant to be generic Gears, using Kim as the base model makes sense. You pop a helmet on the bald character as opposed to creating a whole new, unseen face.
And unless the battle damage is noticeable and apparant, you use the same armour and body. Because ultimately, its a small detail that doesn’t go noticed as much by a whole lot of ppl and you don’t need to spend time and resources creating a whole new model only for the end result to look the same.
The helmets are the only real visual identifier.
The amount of unique dialog between the Carmines is the antithesis of laziness. To be quite honest, nobody was expecting them to have so much context specific dialog and it was actually a welcome surprise.
I keep saying this… but here we go again. We may not all agree with the decisions TC makes, and they have made a good amount of reckless mistakes, but the are FAR from lazy.
Lol this is true.
Maybe one day there will be a Carmine campaign DLC
Doubtful when they keep killing them off regardless of whether they got any potential or not. #StopKillingCarminesforthememes
The complaints never cease to amaze me.
It’s actually Classic Baird.
I think the issues comes from not perceived laziness on most people’s part…
But an expectation for more or of higher quality. A lot of that stems from this hero system, which really limits what they can do. The new Carmines are an example of how to bypass it, but also alienates 50% of the playerbase that might be focused on PvE modes–since we don’t know for sure when their PvE variations will be released–just that they will.
And granted 8 months in I expect better too. We’ve had nearly the same amount of quality skins in 4’s lifetime–but also just as many repeats and store-exclusive sets that there’s almost no point wherein everything was free in Gears 4, it was just mainly luck based.
And I’m glad they got rid of the RNG, but still–Gears 5 feels like it was lacking to begin with. Like they released it in a fresh out-of-beta state and are slowly working towards a full game months afterwards, when it should’ve been complete when it launched.
There was no reason to keep Clayton, Baird, Cole, Lizzie or others from appearing before they did–they’re just lacking and need to drip them out so that they have enough time to work on things that are actually new.
The world’s situation doesn’t help either.
TC isn’t really lazy–most of the main complaints I have had and many people have had from the beginning are going away. But I don’t think that excuses the fact that they were there to begin with.
And to OP on topic of the Carmines being lazy. I think the hero system hurts it a lot–but also design wise we got our first new variants of the Carmines ever (Would’ve been nice to see a Clayton and Lizzie skin in the bundle though). Not to mention their armors have always been the same minus the helmet. If a scratch on the kneepad is gonna drive you crazy than idk what to tell you. I never even noticed that the circle bit on the Lancer spins until recently. They seem much more individual compared to 4. In 3 all the Carmines seemed diverse and in 4 they seemed to be lacking their standard charisma. 5 brought that back. That’s what should be important. Not their kneepads or ammo pouches. They’re supposed to be barebones basic soldiers anyways. The only reason they have different helmets is to tell them apart. If they had different voices I’m sure they’d all wear the same helmet.
Also something just occurred to me. Ben is the youngest of the four, Anthony is first introduced but the third youngest. Clay is the oldest of the 4 with the second oldest being the unnamed D. Carmine. So either their parents named them alphabetically, but backwards, or the “older/ younger” thing is by 2 or 3 minutes or whatever, and all four brothers are really quadruplets.
They don’t have a cannon birthday but the actions of Ben vs Anthony and Clay would suggest otherwise.
Anthony seemed like he had been a Gear for awhile, while Benjamin was fresh out of boot camp when we saw him in Gears 2. But there’s no record of Clay serving before E-Day.
Because they’re tight knit I wouldn’t put more than a 3-4 year gap between Clay and Ben. So if Clay’s the oldest at 24 during Gears 2, Ben would be 4 years younger at 18 with Ant and the 4th in the middle. Makes sense if he’s ten years younger than Marcus and Delta seeing how he even looks younger in 5 compared to them and is generally larger than even Cole. (Younger and Stronger than the Train) suggesting maybe Cole was as big as Clay in his hay-day?
But quadruplets seems unlikely to me just because of their differences in experience.
I still like my theory about Gary. But all of this Carmine speculation deserves it’s own thread.
Stop f*cking lying.
Yep. Totally different armor with battle damage that didn’t use Kim’s head at all.
Funny thing is that starting in Ultimate Edition, that’s exactly what they did. It might be the same face for all Gears, but they actually bothered to change the head. And here comes the OP saying that TC is lazy and FLAT OUT LIES ABOUT THE CARMINES HAVING DIFFERENT ARMOR.
The only thing I want fixed is the 3 (most obvious) Ben lines Anthony has. “Come on, not now!” “Eh, not again!” and “Ugh! Eww! Gross!”
He was massive in Gears 3. He and Clay were the only characters with the same body type, and were the only males to shrink stored weapons.
