The entire game (and series) is over-the-top schlock, and it’s incredible to learn that anybody took it seriously.

It’s over the top sure, and kinda strange–but so is Lord of the Rings. And Game of Thrones. And Halo. But it’s not the intended emotion. You’re taking an artist’s work and subjecting your own interpretation on top of it as the intended feeling. I wasn’t heartbroken or anything but it’s more enjoyable to attempt to take it in as if it were real than to go, “Giant wyrm? That’s dumb. Haha.”

There are a lot of things in life that aren’t intended to be dumb but end up that way. Dumb doesn’t mean bad–in fact, I like dumb–yet GOW2 is undeniably dumb.
Pretty sure that’s solely just your interpretation. I haven’t really met anyone thats like “lolz serious scene. Person died haha these devs are funny”
Like sure, you can view certain scenes as dumb like Benjamin being eaten by the worm, but that’s just how you decide to look at it. Sure, not every death is super serious, but at the same time, they’re not really comedy sketches

All this retcon talk, can we retcon to the very end of Gears 3… “…and so the cog could take stock, reflect and start to build a new future…”
All the while back at a secret location, General Karn was assembling the remaining Locust and with his high priests bringing the Queen BACK TO LIFE.
Game ends with Myrrah screaming LOCUST FOREVER.

Quick note, they made a point of doubling down on Lizzie’s unfortunate death in the recently released book Gears of War: Bloodline. The opening chapter describes her charred remains after the Hammer of Dawn destroyed Settlement 2. Personally I don’t have a strong feeling either way if TC should retcon Lizzie’s fate. But I highly doubt TC would ever do it either. It’d be like bringing Minh Young Kim or Tai Kaliso back. I mean sure it’d be cool AF but also there’s no way for it to make sense.

She’s a Carmine, part of a running joke. I understand that the Carmines sort of out grew that and became beloved by the fans but I never felt that Lizzie was so interesting that they should break the cycle for her.
As far as Clayton goes, him living was both symbolic and a twist in the story.

Lizzie is awesome yes, but the point of the carmines is to have a new one every game.
I’m sure Lizzie’s brother or disinter Will be equally as cool. Hopefully they stay around for longer, like Benjamin.

When its impact has gone to be used as comic relief in some cases. Primarily Gary.
So no, the Carmine trope isn’t genius writing when the majority of the people agree that it’s stale and not really adding things to the plot.
Well I don’t think many people really spend a lot of time thinking about Gears’ inner layers of storytelling sadly. But it’s there, just have to put a little thought into it while you cut lizard men in half.
