I completely agree. Let one thing slide, it allows the possibility of letting another slide. And another. Then next thing you know, the entire universe is contradictory as hell. Lizzie died. She’s 100% dead. People need to accept it as canon. Don’t get me wrong, I’m disappointed they killed her off too early, but it’s water over the bridge now.
Bring! Back! Gary! Now!
I mean she and Gary sort’ve still died off-screen, whereas with Anthony and Ben you see the deaths up close, maybe lizzies death was chopped up for dramatic affect which is a shame, because I think most would agree we’d like to have her back in, but that still doesn’t explain Gary Carmine.
Let’s go with no, but she could always have a sister!
I believe her death is also in the latest book
so I don’t think they can change this, so, no
This topic has literally been done TO DEATH.
Short answer, NO.
Long answer; the creator is free to do what they want when they want. If they wanted to just kill Marcus outright, they could do that—it doesn’t mean people wouldn’t complain and that they should. But they have that power and that right. Lizzie was a character made specifically for the player to look at and be infatuated with, and then make us care more when JD gets her killed alongside a bunch of civilians. Her story is there to jumpstart JD’s story. Is that a bad thing? No, it’s up for debate. The character could’ve had more screen time, I thought the game was too short with only 4 acts, but that’s a critique of the game as a whole.
Do you like how Lizzie was treated? Maybe not. I for one–I’ll put it out that I would’ve liked Lizzie to make it. I just argue in sake of the choice for her to die because I see the reasoning behind it, whether or not it really worked for most players.
What is this, Star Wars now? “I didn’t like a choice in the story made by other people–so change it and retcon all of it! Judgement was better!” The Devs shouldn’t be forced to make retcons based on public opinion. It may sway them going forward, but if they’re just focused on making the community happy (Story, not gameplay) then they won’t be focused on going somewhere new or unique. I swear if Gears 2 came out today 50% of the complaints would be “Why is there a giant worm, that’s so dumb and stupid.”
"The Carmine Meme Is Dumb" --to this I’ve said before it’s one of the most genius writing terms making it into the meta I’ve ever seen. “Carmine” being a shade of red, and “Redshirts” being a term referring to characters that can be killed off with no effect to the story, which has been around longer than Shakespeare but the term specifically became popular around the first Star Trek stuff. Like the “Kurn” effect they did with Tai in Gears 2. Whether you like it or not, the Carmine family is a writing-term realized into an actual set of characters, who are faceless for a reason–but they serve their purpose. It’s only a fan vote that Clayton’s alive. Maybe they can make votes for Carmines going forward, but I wouldn’t care.

Do you not think if I had anything to say I’d have gotten involved in here already?
And before anyone says anything, I’m not going to get involved here. I’ll read this(already have), but as it stands I have no intention to make further comments.
Besides, how I stand on this matter should be more than clear by now.
Just taking a dull spear to the bear’s ■■■ mate. Quarantine is quite boring.
Dude Gears’ death scenes used to be as cool as rest, it was the reason Carmine was so popular. Lizzie having potential doesn’t mean she lives purely because ppl like her.
If Gears can’t kill off its characters, you make the tone weaker and JDs whole shtick pointless
HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
Truthfully I didn’t want Lizzie to die in the campaign,(I’ve viewed a few videos)Still waiting patiently, when this campaign Gears5 is totally fixed,(Crossing fingers it can get fixed, then I can enjoy the campaign myself)But sadly carmines is still getting there family killed off😢,I’m glad I voted to have saved Clayton t-shirt in gears 3 for avatar.
I’ll be real with you, I enjoyed Gears 5’s campaign about as much if not more than 2. Especially from a gameplay perspective.
As for retconning deaths? Nah.
It’s bad enough that Gears 5 was wishy-washy with who to kill off with that endgame choice.
Gears always had conviction in the deaths and that should include Lizzie’s.
Being a likeable character doesn’t mean you live.
The Carmine trope is stale, it’s been done to death.
Calling it genius when its impact has been used as comic relief is asinine.
Death? What death? At the end of Act One they all got in the trucks and left Settlement 2 without incident. She’s just taking a break the rest of the game. Nothing bad happened to her. She’s fine. JD burnt his hand making his dear ol dad some toast then cut himself shaving his head. Lizzie is fine. Lizzie is fine.
Honestly, TC should keep Lizzie dead and stop putting new Carmines in the game altogether. They’re just generic throwaway characters that people pretend to like as a running gag, and it’s a needless waste of studio resources to put a bunch of boring COG Gear reskins into the game when TC could be working on characters at are actually unique looking and worthwhile (e.g., Hoffman, Dom, Reyna, Biker Marcus, etc.). Why TC chose to continue the line of Carmine characters when they took over the franchise is a mystery. They all suck.
What I would question here is why TC even bothers creating a character at all when they’re just going to kill that character off straight away with zero development or anything.
And to be clear, this is a general statement, not for any specific character.
Yeah, I get that the carmines are the whole redshirt thing, but it’s so stale now. Like in Gears 4, they literally added Gary who had no voiceless in the campaign and all they did was say “hey carmine, take that turret” which is lazy and clearly no one cared that he died.
But the difference between him and Lizzie is that Lizzie actually had a bit of a story and character development going for her. In my original post, I did state that I’d be fine if she ‘eventually’ died just like Benjamin, so its not like I’m just wanting the character to have immunity just because I like her.
I just think it’s really poor writing to have this meme of carmines dying. I get why, but it’s just not even entertaining anymore.
And I will say yes, once one thing gets retconned, more probably will, which i do see is a potential problem, but i only say it because with how the story has been going since gears 4, its like not many people even care for the story anymore.
Lizzie’s death served a purpose in JD’s character development tho.
I also like the Carmine’s die shtick. I hope we see many more. #CarmineMustDie
Rod said in an interview for gears 3 and gears (REDACTED) that "good developers change Canon for the sake of gameplay. The whole reason why the Lancer has a chainsaw is because the traditional bayonet wouldn’t pierce the grubs hide, but they changed that canon by adding the retro Lancer. So canon consistency isn’t a priority for Epic and TC.
