Regency vs. Hotel
The inspiration from fan favourite Hotel is clear. With embar at the top of the building, frags just inside the front door & boom/ drop outside.
Despite concerns over the size of Regency, I believe it majorly improves upon Hotel. Here’s why:
Spawn
Hotel’s exposed, wide open spawns are replaced with a spawning area that is better covered. Players can now freely leave their spawn without being spawn trapped from the centre-line positions of the map, both inside Hotel and out.
Lanes
There are now 3 exits out of spawn, rather than the inside or out choice Hotel was limited to. The enemy team also can’t spot easily which lane is being opted for and rotate within a few seconds, to stack up on the location.
Entrance
Players playing for the boomshot/ drophshot on Regency are no longer instantly trapped outside, angled or flanked if the frags area is lost like with Hotel. This makes the map far less volatile and gives players the ability to defend themselves or rotate out.
Middle (1)
The intelligent elevation and spacing means players can enter through the front door, without being so exposed to the Embar pickup. There is more cover past the “T” cover, than there is to the “H” of Hotel, along with access to the spawns for lateral movement.
Middle (2)
The exciting fight on “H” cover of Hotel is adequately replaced with the “T”, and Regency keeps the intimate relationship between frags and boomshot, thanks to the close proximity between the two via the front door.
Statue Hall
This area reminds me more of Avalanche’s long corridors than Hotel, but the additional space allows for shocks to be introduced en route, and Embar no longer has elevation and overwatch of the entire building and front door.
