Reducing the player count is a regressive tactic that should never have been an option on the board. I know there are a group of players that believe it was a good decision and I’d like to see how many of them are the Gears 1 elitists that are only happy when they are playing a carbon copy of the first iteration.
The fifth player on a team simply adds more chaos to the game mode which reduces camping. The issues of players setting up and lancering still exists just simply with one less player shooting and one less target running around. The problem there is a question of map and weapon balancing… not player count.
TC’s ranking setup has also created a condensed competitive environment even in the lower ranks. Placement matches are need to be reintroduced to divide the population back to the segments it needs to exist in. The slow grind of ranked has encouraged players to use more assured (albeit broken) methods such as lancering the entire game.
Personally, I don’t mind the team cap since I tend to play as a duo. Though I believe they should have capped it at three and kept the fifth player. Four and five stack players shouldn’t be banned, but they should basically only be finding each other. These stacks are the ones that I normally experience the aforementioned methods.
It all comes down to a balancing act. Rather than figure out how to make these matches enjoyable and fair TC just removed a player. It’s the same logic that was applied to the starter weapons in Gears 4. Stop removing aspects that Gears of War garnered over time and start learning the balance your matchmaking and weapons in a meaningful way.
