News July 8 - New Ranked system

Guardian was popular when they removed it.
I would happily be proven wrong if you can provide the numbers that say otherwise.

There are!!! Better wait a lil longer and get a balanced Match instead of a ping Parade sponge fest

expecting me to provide numbers when I’m not a dev? mkay.

The good news here is that classic Guardian is returning in some capacity, the question is whether or not it’ll stick.

You might have to drag me into Guardian someitmes mate :smirk:

News about guardian seemed positive, TC didn’t forget about it, they made some changes to the leader and are gonna try it out. Hopefully you like the changes and it finds it was back to Rank.

They say that you can do things to get gears points outside of winning, so you can probably earn some maybe outside of ranked. And also remember your points correlate with your skill ranking, so if you lose and lose and lose and do horrible every single time, it could be that at lower ranks (Bronze 1 for example) the matches cost no points at all to be in. This system seemed whack at first but upon further inspection it’s actually quite an ingenious way to fix the ranking issues it keeps the people who say “if win go up or lose go down” happy because you do and it keeps the people who complain when they do really good and still get punished for having useless or quitting teammates happy as well cause you can still earn points for performance. My main concern now is if you are good at the game and get to a high rank, is there no way to enjoy a casual KOTH or whatever matches now? It sounds like quick play will be only tdm. I feel like a lot of people don’t want every match they play to be sweat fests, at least at higher ranks. We’ll have to see what TC say about it

my boy @Z_i_i (sorry to ping you mate, just hate talking behind your back is all) discussed the same sentiments, though I do understand that point the idea TC could seriously design a ranking system around this is just impossible, they have quickplay for a reason after all my dudes.

Ranked used to be far more casual or not as “sweaty” as it is now, but back then ranking system didn’t really exist so although you would occasionally have super sweaty matches (I just saw a video from Limitless against Likebutters in GOW3 as an example) the overall experience was really casual, TC likes the sweat lol.

The only solution I could see would be if they had a dedicated quickplay playlist that only Diamond/Master level players could play, that way although you knew for sure your opponents weren’t noobies you’d still not have the same level of intensity as ranked. It would probably be a grab bag playlist with a bunch of different gametypes in it of course, but that’s about the only solution I can think of outside of breaking the ranking system entirely.

I’m so happy about these decisions, looks like they’re close to nail the ranked part of g5:

I’ve been asking this from the start, in other games it’s already like this and provides the best experience for everyone included
should also mitigate the stack vs randoms issue as matches will be more balanced and as a master player I won’t get a few bronzes to match my presence against a full stack of diamonds

this is my only concern so far as they didn’t address the stack vs random problem directly but this could work
another clarification might be how the matchmaking is going to handle a pre-made squad of high ranks and low ranks

this is good for everyone
while the current post score recap is a complete mess, it still can be used to understand why people is not ranking or is going down.
if they’ll provide a whole bunch of reasons, it might be a reality check for most players as I’ve seen people complaining about their score but tbh they often weren’t eligible of ranking up

this is also good news for population
I’ve always encouraged people to try koth instead of camping in TDM
of all the modes it’s been the easiest to rank up in, most people aren’t that skilled and too often rely on power weapon spawns or camping in general especially due to map layouts

objective modes is where it’s at, koth is a good compromise of team play and simplicity, escalation is too complex without strategies, comms and coordination.
Most people can get away with a lot in koth, should be fun for everyone

Good, I love Judgement escalation. My most played game mode on gears. Forget what ever issues people had with GOWJ a stripped down domination mode like that was superb. I much prefer that to KOTH or the over complicated mess it currently is.

Of course then you run into populating issues where no one can find any games  this is going to be a tough issues to tackle, but maybe when TC go in depth with it might turn out they have a solution already in play

Can anyone explain why it costs GP points to enter a game? Yet GP points determine your rank? So if you spend points to enter a game and then lose you get de-ranked or punished pretty badly?

Not necessarily, if your individual performance is high enough it’ll either offset the cost or overcome it, sorta like what the current system is now but it does sound more leaned towards wins instead of points.

Everything done just seems to be done for the sake of simplicity, so because you know how much it’ll cost to enter a match you’ll also have an idea as to how many points you gotta get in order to go up as well.

It is a good system to punish quitters, and to mean that people who barely perform will eventually get to the point when them being carried won’t give them many points overall.

I also suspect one reason as to why they want to require points to enter is because it’ll just incentivize players to play the game more, because surely at some point you (as a player) will run out of GP to enter, so you will then have to earn some by playing quickplay

If you lose it all I imagine you would go down a ranked tier and get given more to help arrest the slide, but will have to wait to see exactly how it works. It could also happen then when oyu go up a tier you get a bonus to stop you sliding straight back down on a single loss

JoTay did say they don’t want people yoyo-ing up and down, so I imagine they have something in place like my idea above,

Oh I see so if you do well, you get more points than you spent on the match and go up essentially?

@GhostofDelta2 I think my understanding of GP is a bit bad, GP is tied to one playlist, if you had say 10,000 GP and you had to spent 1,000 to enter a match of course if you somehow got zero (mainly due to quitting :rage:) of course you’d go down, but I’m guessing that wins almost always even out point losses as long as you don’t lose too often you should be ight.

@Nastyy_INinja yeah pretty much

Yes. There is a cap but the game looks at performance metrics (depending on mode) and wards you points.

You can lose and still get back your points if you do extremely well, or you will easily get your points back and more if winning

I believe so, and TC is smart enough to put a test phase for the first few weeks into OP4 so they can tweak it before the ranking season officially goes live

I would look at Apex Legends ranked mode as an example, it is extremely well implemented in that.

I know a BR will play differently to a KotH game, but it has the same core foundations.

FFA is ranked now?
