Yep yep,
And maybe there isn’t anything wrong but it just isn’t transparent enough to understand. I’ll keep posting personal findings here and keep messaging on twitter. They used to be responsive on Twitter.

I rank up even when I lose on gears 5 now?
Sure seems that way
I’ve had that happen with me in silver and gold tiers. Not in onyx tho
that’s a huge problem right there.
last night, well this morning, i played against a guy about 4-5 games in a span of 6-7 games.
When he wasn’t going to win, he bailed on his team. When he had a chance, because I had anchors weighing me down on my team, he stayed and won.
Him quitting means he is avoiding penalties, right? BUT he is penalizing us because when he quits are skill pts get screwed.
This is not right, it should be balanced to when they quit during the game.
I’m curious what happens to you when you quit. I’ll have to hop on a smurf account and try it… But at the same time that’s not fair to whoever gets stuck with my smurf on their team.
Yeah no this game’s ranking system is completely messed lmao.
MVP again, went 12-4 and won the game, lost 173 points (at silver 2). So real
This was precisely my experience with Gears 4 as well. It almost seemed like it was possible to build up a “cushion” on Gears 4 because even on the off chance I performed just kinda so-so I still wouldn’t lose % from that one bad game.
Compared to Gears 5, you’re basically not allowed to have a “bad game” (or even sometimes just a sorta good game) or you’re going down in rating almost guaranteed.
Coming from somebody with the Diamond Gear and a Diamond 5 banner in Gears 4, Gears 5’s ranking system feels so bad and punishing by comparison. Hopefully it gets better.
Sheesh, at silver 2?
Well that throws out my ‘higher ranks are punishing’ theory.
We’re all just spinning wheels now until TC breaks silence on how they’re calculating.
you have to be efficient to rank up.
don’t look at the elims because i mean you can get 100 elims by focusing on that and shoothing everyone with just a bullet or two. elims are not a stat to go by.
kd? no, it isn’t about camping either.
you have to be efficient. like think about running around the map in cod hardpoint, getting kills, clearing the hill and dropping streaks - that is how you rank up.
it has to be tweaked but i hope they dont make it like gears 4 were undeserving people made it to diamond rank, high diamond rank
it should be tough and playing on a full team and winning easy and boring games shouldn’t rank you up.
the top soccer team in the league doesn’t necessarily have to have the best 11 players of the season.
i think we can ask for one thing but careful not to ruin another
players like us, who are actually good at the game, need to be rewarded.
just like there are actual good players in teams that are not champions of their league.
That’s a fair point about “it should be hard”. Too often you’d run across Diamonds who were absolute doodoo butter without their stack in Gears 4, I wonder if it’ll be that way again this time when everything settles.
I think what Alice and I (and a lot of the rest of us) are saying is that the system as it currently stands doesn’t seem to always make a lot of sense. Compared to Gears 4 which (for me anyways) pretty much always made sense. I never felt like I was being robbed unfairly when I didn’t move up % and definitely never ranked down from a match I know I popped off in.
You pretty much have to demand perfection of yourself to rank up, which i personally like but it does seem that some times you play a long game and do good but get negative or zero pts.
I managed to get to masters rank in koth quite quickly but i do think it is harsh.
I just don’t want “doodoo butter” players to get to where they don’t deserve. That is my concern.
You should have to be an oustanding player to make diamond and masters.
Not just someone who plays a lot or who hides behind a stacked team.
in my view, masters rank is like the NFL all-pro team.
Do you happen to know off hand how quickly you got to Masters in KotH? Like in how many games, I mean.
That’s the mode I’m grinding right now myself, so I’m curious.
i can’t say exactly but it can’t be too many… After getting out of silver 2 i went up at least 50 percent in tier rank every day after that.
Ahh okay, I suspected this was the case. Because for whatever reason Silver 2 is from like 10k rating to 15k so getting through there takes ages.
Anyways, thanks. Hopefully I’ll see you soon in Masters then.
Silver took me the longest to get out of.
Gold tier was literally 2 matches (one a loss)
Now I’m halfway through O3. That’s where the match results confusion started showing up.
I agree with you on all those points.
What I’ve experienced so far is that I move farther when I solo. I’m not sure how I feel about that when taking your point of morons waltzing into diamond into account.
Here’s my thoughts, your input is welcomed:
(taking into account the early status and majority rank tier being silver/gold)
Solo q usually fits me into a team of lower tiered players. If I win the lottery there will be another higher tier on there and that’s a nice bonus.
The enemy team usually isn’t anything crazy. Maybe one or two higher tiered guys… Sometimes not. No 5 man diamond stacks yet (which is nice).
In these matches, my goal is to play all the roles that I can to batten down the hatches. Unfortunately, this turns into being the slayer more often than not so my teammates can cap. Not a huge deal. I know I have to do exceedingly well AND win the match to move a couple numbers. Sometimes it’s a nice jump.
Now, squad play. 5 man stack, let’s say 3 onyx tiered and 2 silvers. Takes forever to find a match.
Enemy teams vary. Either its a quitfest which results in some (unfair) rank pain or its a decent enough team/very skilled team.
These games are tough in a different way, where you have to fight tooth and nail for every inch. Usually goes into 3 rounds, win by a thread.
My concern is that when playing on a 5 man squad against a higher ranked, skilled team and winning a match, you may eek by a 30 - 50 point gain as an MVP. (generous).
But I can work hard in a different way playing solo, crunching through lower tiered players for a + 3k-5k point lead, MVP and churn out 100 points in results. (or lose and face whatever math they decide)
The best way I can justify these differences in skill measurement is that in a squad I feel wins are more likely but the opponents are harder. Less lead in points… so the reward is less.
Solo q - riskier- the wins are up to the gods of lobby placement but personal performance is more consistent with a massive lead over the board. Rewards higher.
But which scenario really makes me a better player…
i think that the only way that teams/stacks should really rank up is by beating another team/stack that is evenly matched.
i just dont want them moving up by beating up on solo players and getting easy wins.
i agree with your breakdown of solo vs team, it is a completely different experience. to me, fair or not, playing solo proves more.
you do move more as a solo than on a team, but that is just do to the fact that there just won’t be the same amount of competition when playing on a full team. the community doesn’t have enough stacked teams and that is why we have those long wait times.
it can be seen as a little unfair to stacked teams that solo players can find quicker games and rank up more, but the only way to solve that is to let stacked teams gain skill pts by winning easy games - throwing favored/unfavored out the window - or by unleashing stacked teams against solos, duos and teams of 3 (teams of 3 shouldn’t complain too much about 5 mans imo).
it is just how it is, there really can’t be a perfect model to make everyone happy. it stacked teams get the short end of the stick then so be it because they are a very small minority and from a personal standpoint im tired of seeing stacks think they are big time when they really aren’t
it’s a bit petty of me but im enjoying seeing those “fake diamonds” from gears 4 get nowhere close to diamond now…
I honestly haven’t run into a single hyper sweaty ■■■■■■ stack like in 4. Good players for sure, but they weren’t toxic at all. Probably some reason to that rhyme
For me the dilemma is that I enjoy playing with friends on a team here and there. (knowing that if the squad leans to the higher tier then I’m more than likely not moving up or going backwards a bit.
Whereas I could spend that time solo instead and gain a good chunk. (which sounds self inflated… But it’s how the game seems to be built)
It’s just down to choosing whether to have a good time with some peeps or instead choose to grind your progress. Bummer we can’t have more of both.
That being said. I love playing with lower tiered friends
Yeah, can confirm it starts going very fast after Silver. I’m about to move into O1 finally, about 17.5k rating (haven’t had a lot of time to play rip).
I had an odd thing happen last night with the matchmaking. I got put into a full bronze lobby, twice. Where both team’s ratings were only 33k or so. Which means half of that was mine so uhhh… I don’t even know.
Needless to say they were free wins, just weird lol.
Honestly it’s something in KOTH I’m having 0 issues ranking in TDM which is a mode I used to steer clear of cause KOTH is my fav. I’ve been stuck in silver since placement with lots of wins and MVP. You should never lose points for winning whether you did well or not a win should get you some kind of increase. In TDM I’m onyx 3 top %10 so diamond soon enough every time I win I get points in TDM sometimes not much because of favored but I still get points. Not sure if KOTH is bugged or what but this ■■■■ needs fixing ASAP!!
Lil further up the thread Civilize and I were discussing this.
As you rise in rank, Solo Q is usually gonna drop you into under-tiered games. Not all will be wins due to random lobby chosen by the universe. It picks by whether it hates you or likes you. You’ll get paired with quitters or window lickers… And you’ll destroy the match point wise but end up losing overall. (long as there aren’t enemy quitters it’s no big deal)
But a handful of times you’ll get another decent player on your team or the enemy team will have the majority of double digit iqs. Maintain a large point domination as MVP and that will be your bread and butter.
I think a few contributors to this situation is lack of thorough rank spread because the game is very new and as people get higher ranked they are using gears 4 theory of stack to win.
We’ll, stacks might get you a win but they will only drool a few points at you before wiping them away the next game.
Right now, solo is the way to go. Maybe groups of 2 or 3.
5 stacks only if you aren’t grinding and just want to have a more team game experience with friends. Any gain is a blessing.
@KnockedLo0se
Interesting.
Koth is all I have enough experience with to give any sort of judging assessment/guesswork. It’s all I really play. I suppose I can try out another mode just to compare.
At any rate, I still wanna know wtf happened with the scenario in my opening post. Lol
