Let's revisit OP4 together

With OP5 right around the corner, let us discuss the positive changes that TC have made with the transition from OP3 to OP4.

NOTE: I have mentioned the changes which I personally thought was a good improvement to the game in the long run.

i) Removal of totem system. OP4 scrapped all totems altogether, so that you don’t have to purchase a totem and then grind its challenges associated with that particular totem. Worse part of this was that some the totem challenges were bugged. In OP3, I made it all the way to general and earned my ‘Armored Kantus’ skin. But I couldn’t equip the skin because I didn’t purchase the totem yet… so annoying. Glad that they got rid of this system.

ii) After you reach ‘General’ rank with tour of duty, the tour of duty doesn’t stop yet. Legend ranks start from there on immediately. Just by earning a minor 12 stars, you could earn 750 coins. This was a good addition from TC to ensure that the tour of duty doesn’t stop abruptly. This was already a major turn off for players who made it to ‘General’ rank pretty early on during the course of OP4 and as a result they felt a bit…empty.

iii) In horde, power taps take less time to collect energy, as compared to OP3 where you had to hold the ‘X’ button for a huge amount of time. Often times you won’t be able to complete the animation if the power tap was located far from your base and the new wave would abruptly start, making you highly susceptible to enemy fire.

iv) Again, coming back to power taps in horde, OP4 ensured that power taps could be upgraded even further, making them even more valuable. Also the team gets a global health bonus per level of the tap. And the energy drawn from the tap is increased by roughly 50%.

v) Making the fabricator accessible to everyone.
Now, anyone can purchase fortifications, weapons and even upgrade existing fortifications. It is not exclusive to the engineer only. This opens up some exciting combinations in horde for a ‘No Engineer’ runs.

vi) Addition of Paduk. Nicely balanced character, and having more diverse cards which opens up for a possibility of an ‘Execution’ build ‘Sniper’ build or a mixture of both. Nicely done by TC.

vii) Marcus’s skill for ‘Rifle feedback’ the numerical values have been reduced (nerfed). This is good, nobody likes OP Marcus anyway… even a small nerf was good.
EDIT: @HerrKatzchen has been kind enough to point out that the introduction of Headshot master and Ultimate Buff for Marcus nullifies this. The negatives far outweigh the positives in this situation, so all in all this isn’t considered as a good improvement.

viii) Longshot tuning. I am talking about this specifically:

ix) Maximum card level has increased from level 5 to level 6.

x) Removal of the ‘Supply drop’. For those who don’t remember, it was a random card which was obtained daily and could be either a weapon skin, iron, boost, character skin, etc. Hated loot boxes in Gears 4, glad to see that this ‘randomness’ was removed.

xi) Introduction of store. Now all the characters whom you have to obtain by purchasing totems and completing their respective challenges, have been added to the store. You can now purchase characters of your choice easily with coins. And it would be instantly ready to play! If you wanted to play as Clayton, Cole, Baird, etc. in escape and horde, you couldn’t do that without purchasing their respective totem (and completing the challenges associated with them). Now you can easily purchase these characters with coins and experience their playstyle. So basically characters are now ‘unlocked’ whenever you get ANY character skin associated with that character.

xii) Introduction of Kait, Fahz, Del, JD as escape characters! They are no longer exclusive to horde.

xiii) Free for All versus game mode was reduced to a maximum of 8 players.

xiv) Introduction of Dom, Locust Grenadier, Locust Drone, Mihn, Uzil Skraag, Samantha Byrne, Zamil Karn, etc. as versus characters.

xv) Introduction of classic maps such as Blood Drive and Checkout.

xvi) Reactor map is the best highlight of OP4. This map just oozes creativity. The animation of the reactor operating in this map is just fantastic.

xvii) Addition of an ‘Assymetric’ map (Rail Line) in horde. TC should try to make more assymmetric maps.

xviii) Batista as Marcus in Gears 5 campaign. I know a lot of people are upset about this, but I still just had to mention this as this is going to release before OP4 gets over. Batista seems very passionate about taking on the role of Marcus. You can tell he puts his heart and soul in the character he plays. That is enough proof for me that the job was done well from Batista’s side. TC on the other hand… I don’t wanna go there (this would destroy the purpose of this thread).

xix) Addition of two new music tracks which played during ‘Boss waves’ in horde.

xx) Introduction of Horde Frenzy. Not only that, TC also gave us the freedom to create our own custom lobbies for this game mode.

xxi) Allies xp bonus has been increased to the maximum limit of +15%.

xxii) Also, NOW GNASHER HAS 8 SHOTS!!!

xxiii) Terminator skins have been changed to increase visbility.

xxiv) Sires can now be chainsawed and killed by retro lancer charge.

xxv) Heavy weapons such as Buzzkill, Mulcher, Cryo Cannon etc. can now be purchased from the fabricator.

xxvi) Flashbangs are now available as an option for default loadout.

xxvii) Taking cover used to provide additional defence bonus. TC scrapped that defence bonus : ‘If you can see them, you can hit them’

xxviii) Also I am obligated to say this but… various bug fixes by TC.

I am again mentioning that I haven’t talked about all the updates of OP4, I only placed emphasis on what I thought was significant enough.

Please contribute to this thread by highlighting/mentioning what improvements you thought were a significant improvement to OP4. I want to know the community’s thoughts.

Sure, OP4 brought in many updates that TC ‘thought’ it was a positive improvement. But no, I want to know YOUR opinion on whether this was a good improvement or not.

Please DO NOT MENTION THE BUGS/DISSAPOINTMENTS that OP4 brought along with it. Kindly only mention the changes that OP4 brought along with it that changed the game in a positive way on the long run.

I have to admit, I have a hidden motive of creating this thread. I want to check the consistency of TC’s performance.

Here, I have outlined the positive changes from OP3 to OP4. I will do a similar thread in the future once we reach the end of OP5. Then I will compare the positive changes from OP4 to OP5 over OP3 to OP4 by coming back to this very thread.

Your feedback is very crucial.

Thank You!

@Scoops_4 did a great job by creating a thread yesterday which analyzed ‘This Week in Gears’
The link to the thread is here : 2020 TWIG Content: VS, Escape, Horde

@Scoops_4 kindly create a similar one/expand upon the existing thread to include TWIG content for OP5 towards the end of OP5 please?

For me, the bestthing about OP4 was the changes to the fabricator. Being able to buy the weapons i want and build without having to be an engineer was a good change, especially if you like to play solo horde.

Great list. Yes Op 4 was a Major turning point for Gears 5.

Now we just need a lot of new maps. I can’t wait for Op 5.

Operation 4 got me back into gears after months off so for that I do thank them, various issues and lack of content still but here’s hoping OP5 is rich in that as I’m certainly enjoying GOW again in general

We’ve been playing this garbage for 13 years now.

Keep out of Gears 6

My opinions on this are that TC don’t understand good map design (they probably think they’re “innovating” or “changing up the formula”) its why Gears 5 is about 50/50 when it comes to maps, on one hand you have great maps (Allfathers Arena, District, Exhibit) on the other you have maps that are extremely unpopular/hated (Pahanu, Bunker, Vasgar, Icebound, Reactor) so they don’t understand WHY a map is good or bad, they think “BloodDrive popular so it must be great” not “why is this map picked over other maps?”

BloodDrive was by far the best map in GOW2, and what people fail to understand is that Gears 5 (hell any other Gears game besides maybe 1) play drastically different than GOW2, so the strats and tactics used are way different, so although BloodDrive is known for being a campfest in GOW5 it was nothing like that in Gears 2.

Quite simply Microsoft needs to hire either better QA (they should’ve had some sort of idea that these maps would be extremely unpopular and why) or just better map devs, I’m aware that like 80% of the effort for a map is the aesthetics or how it “feels” but honestly that 20% is what makes or breaks a map for most fans. All the time devs spend on a map is wasted if it ends up being extremely unpopular and never actually played, like I stand by this they could’ve ported 6 Gears 4 maps in the time it took them to create Pahanu, all of which probably would’ve been played/voted for more so its really just a huge waste of time/resources to make maps that are trash tier.

Yeah, I’m also too tired of seeing Blood drive and Checkout constantly being selected during the voting screen for versus matches.

I meant it was good in the sense that classic maps were added to gears 5… but I didn’t expect the community to put these maps on a silver platter compared to other maps which Gears 5 had to offer.

Too bad this didn’t happen during OP4 despite being announced August 20th.

100% accuracy the second you stop moving will always be a bad idea.

With the exception of a very few selected cards it meant nothing. All the good cards were nerfed making upgrades to 6 more or less pointless and useless cards remained useless.

Just to give a quick example: Macs ff-dmgres went from 99% to 100%. Lizzies Sister from 200% to 205%, Kaits Bleed from 100% to 110%. Keep in mind that all these upgrades were advertised as being SIGNIFICANTLY.

That’s gonna change with OP5 since TC announced that the OP4 content will be vaulted with the exception of a few useless items.

Once Operation 4 ends, all items in the Operation section of the store (except Marks and the District weapon set) will head into the vault

While simultaneously removing the interesting maps from the map-pool.

Worse than Canals or Bunker.

This will never be a positive thing… You already acknowlegded that most ppl disagree with this decision so why even bother listing it?

both bad and I have yet to met someone who enjoys them (or has their music-slider not set to 0)

While also losing track of all previously played Frenzy-matches.

FTFY.

While introducing more and more bugs at the same time, currently quite a few gamebreaking,

Reddit might be more your thing if you want to circle****

TC pulled them from Tactics. Personally, I think they don’t really fit in very well and if they’re going to use soundtracks for Horde they should be pulled from other mainline titles or from 5.

Hello, thank you for taking your time to thoroughly read my post!

Really? I thought I remembered seeing somewhere on this forum showing a screenshot of the damage multiplier reduced on the card. I’ll gladly edit my original post if you would agree with me. However, I would have checked this for myself but my Marcus is stuck on lvl 6 for months… I ahven’t bothered playing as Marcus.

Isn’t this a good thing for escape and horde?

At least the duplicate cards are somewhat getting used. Even a small numerical increment from lvl 5 to lvl 6 has to be a good aspect anyway.

That’s too bad… at least the transition from the totem system was a short-lived positive thing in OP4.

I agree.

I meant reactor map as a feature of OP4. I didn’t want to compare reactor with canals or bunker as these maps were already released before OP4.

It came under OP4 content so that’s why I had to mention this…

Yes… but at least they made an effort(even if it wasn’t good) compared to listening the same old track over and over again.

Thanks! I purchased Gears 5 mid-OP3… so I had no idea about this.

Quite disappointing actually on TCs end. Just have to hope that it all gets fixed when OP5 releases.

No thanks I dislike reddit. I don’t even want to have a reddit account.

There was a slight nerf with OP4s launch for the card itself. But the introduction of Headshot master and Ult Buff more than nullified that.

With reduced bullet-magnetism? No. And it’s certainly terrible in PVP. As proven by the OSOK-event at that time.

Too bad I still got over 2k+ duplicates. And like I said, in the cases where an increase would have been nice TC decided to nerf. JDs and Keegans went from LV5-50% to LV6-25%. Amazing stuff.

I wouldn’t get my hopes up with their track-record so far.

There were a few positive things in OP4 but all the bugs overshadow them. And TC never admitting that they messed something up is a huge factor for me being so negative all the time.

First time I heard someone define tile based maps as “interesting”

Do you actually play PvP? Those are two drastically different maps not just in terms of layout or design but in terms of popularity. That would be like saying its worse than Gridlock or Pahanu

I know you are probably going to say “no” but maps are primarily made for Versus in mind and then they just add the fabricator and enemy spawns, so if you never play PvP you don’t fully appreciate maps.

Being optimistic doesn’t equal to having a reddit circlejerk, my guy. People can have opposing opinions.

I actually do, and I ■■■■■■■ despise Canals and Reactor. Bunker is ok in certain modes but the other 2 can fk right off.

Trying to turn the thread into an echochamber is the most reddit-thing though.

Thanks for this, I’ll edit my original post right away to accommodate this information.

We seem to have differing opinions on this so lets just leave it at that.

Yes, its quite sad actually. Hope OP5 gives us an option to cash in our duplicate cards for coins.

TC being TC… can’t do much about it.

ok so its about what you personally think not based on what majority thinks, alright. Canals is probably voted 5x more than Bunker and Reactor combined, so that’s why I feel the comparison is off.

My sweaty tryhard 5 stacks in ranked KOTH definitely impact my perspective though, if you play quickplay or something idk.

It’s based on my opinion and the ppl I play with on the regular. We always avoid Canals and Reactor.
