Is gears 5 really so bad? Or is it just the glitches and server problems that bug you?

It’s a good game it’s fun to play horde, escape and, versus with friends

Game’s release should have been postponed two weeks, a month, a month and a half or whatever time they would have needed to iron out the bugs and server/connection issues.

There are many changes in gameplay I do not like but the pressing issues are bugs and connection problems.

Been on MP since Thursday.

Always put in foreign servers so game has been a mess to play smoothly online.

I’ve been playing it alot yes…but not because I love it. Im playing it a lot, because I am trying to FORCE myself to enjoy it.

The shot delays are extreme, and have gotten me killed way too many times thanks to muscle memory.

The pings are really prevelant in this one with the aim assist combined with the high pings.

A grenade launcher?
Flashbangs?
The stopping power is insane
The lancer is too powerful when combined with the slower movement and stopping power, no Gnasher is ever needed really

The Gnasher needs a range nerf

Using the longshot used to be an acquired skills…not anymore. The aim assist and new crosshair makes it a simpleton weapon.

Not a single HB on any TDM map.

Only 5 maps, and getting stale already.

Bunker is the worst map ever made in Gears. The most boring, long, drawn out matches, due to the strength of the rifles taking you out instantly.

The mulcher, I LOST (have a clip on my XBL) to a lancer? I filled him with mulcher rounds, and he downed me w the lancer first…

I don’t care what anyone says, a damn mulcher should be 3-4 bullets, and you are in pieces

The ToD is not great as all starts can’t be earned over the entire game as a whole in bulk. To earn them, which everyone WANTS to do, you have to play modes that you might otherwise not play, basically forcing your hand to not have fun in modes you don’t like

So overall in VS…it needs a ton of work to be relevant, because as it’s stand right now. It’s not gears of war anymore at all.

Gears is the swarm
Gears of war is the locust

Not just in the literal sense, but figuratively too.

The locust were always better.

It is a problem when you have a specific combination of characters as part of your strategy for the harder difficulties :stuck_out_tongue: Try Marcus+Fahz sometime, combine their ultimates while using claws, it’s OP.
@julianwelton
Can’t say I agree with all, but defo some good points here. I thought it was just my garbage internet but perhaps not? Particularly when regarding 5.

I wouldn’t mind the OP lancer if it weren’t for maps like district. Literally no gnasherplay, just cowards plinking at each across the maps with rifles all day, it’s so boring. But on other maps, it works really nicely I think, particularly exhibit.

Spawns aren’t great but I think gears 4 spawns are still worse.

Boltok got F’d, it’s too underpowered now. 2 shots to the head wont kill someone (even when 1 is active), wtf? Not sure what you mean about the other power weapons tho tbh. Examples?

13 is a big one for me too, that’s pretty damn annoying.

About the power weapons being broken? Various issues. Salvo has too many shots and a huge blast radius. Boomshot and Dropshot feel much clunkier and less effective than their Gears 4 counterparts. The warden hammer is ridiculously OP. I have a clip of myself getting killed while at the bottom of some short stairs by a guy, who cant see me, at the top of the stairs about 5-10 feet away. I’ve watched it several times and I still cant believe I died from it. The Longshot aim assist seems higher as I, a mediocre sniper at best, can now pop off several headshots in a row fairly consistently.

Honestly, just about every aspect of this game feels off or just plain bad to me. So many changes were made, many of them for the worse, that were seemingly made as “progress” for progresses sake. The end result is that it doesn’t feel like Gears anymore, at least not to me. Even Gears 4, which I’m admittedly not a huge fan of, felt like Gears. A worse version (IMO) but it still had enough Gears DNA to feel like Gears. Enough to make the highs feel high and the lows feel low.

Gears 5 feels like what Remnant: From the Ashes feels like to a Dark Souls fan. You can see that it borrowed things here and there but it isn’t Dark Souls. I truly don’t see how they think they’re going to make Gears 5 an Esports title. This gameplay and these maps do not lend themselves to any type of competitive play.

I know it’s not for everyone, and It’s probably because I’m getting older, but I really enjoy the core gameplay. Some balancing is needed. I think the Lancer damage is fine, I’d just take out stopping power. I also really enjoyed the campaign and Escape.

They ruined Horde though

I also despise the progression system and the store. sadly, I can’t see myself sticking around for long for this gears game unless they change that. If I can’t grind and unlock stuff at a fair and reasonable rate (As well as not being able to earn iron besides 500 every 3 months) I have considerably less fun with a game. There’s already a ton of games out there with better item shops and progression systems, humorously enough Gears 4 being one of them.

Sad to hear you feel that way about it, I feel like gears 4 felt a bit off and gears 5 is more like a gears game to me. It’s had a lot of changes but I think they work in its favour.

Right now, my main gripes with this are with the gnasher and lancer. The gnasher is straight up broken. I thought it was just me, but I’ve asked a few others and they get the same thing. Basically, I don’t even see the point in dodging anymore, because no matter how badly people miss their shots, they still kill me. I been bodied when i’m behind some1 (backpacked), at their side or even completely behind cover with no chance of even a single pellet being able to touch me and still died. I’m actually gonna make a new thread just for that once I amass enough clips to make a decent compilation. It seems to take more shots to kill ppl with it now, the drop off seems to reduce damage a lot more now.

And then there’s the lancer. I don’t mind the high damage too much, but they should reduce it just a bit tbh, because as I said, some maps are just impossible to do any gnasher play with. People just shoot from cover and never really kill each other because they’re all too scared to push each other.
And RB for chainsaw just needs to go, so many times the damn thing just doesn’t rev, or it accidently reloads and then gets me killed. And now that the gnasher just seems to be even more biased in gears 5 than gears 4 (i.e. shoot some1 point blank, they survive, shoot you back, you get bodied instead), I can hardly even fall back on using the chainsaw for kills because it’s just as useless!

For me, all they have to do is fix those two weapons, and maybe make the mulcher slightly more powerful if they have the time coz it’s weak af right now.

Well, I guess I’m glad you like it. Although, I cant believe that the damage omen isn’t on your ‘must fix immediately’ list. That thing literally drove me away from MP. If it wasn’t for that I’d probably hop on if only to get a better grasp of everything going on but dying because my screen flashes red and blurs out the second I get shot is a full stop for me.

Yea, I get that, it makes it much harder to turn the tables on someone but I actually don’t mind the inverse omen tbh. Gears has gotten softer and softer on people over the years and I missed the days when gears was F’ing hardcore. A difficult game to play that would punish wreckless play. To me, the inverse omen is a good reason to stay extra vigilant, a reason to make me try harder at the game. Makes staying alive and getting kills feel more rewarding to me. On top of that, it just adds to the atmosphere and feel of gears in general I think. This is also why I don’t mind the strong lancer or the 6 shot gnasher; it makes it harder, more challenging. But I don’t like it when it means that everyone uses rifles and never the shotgun, that’s the downside.

Umm what Kait glitch?

There seems to be some kind of glitch which allows people to have duplicate characters in the same match. Have seen a screenshot where there were three Kaits in the same picture standing around the fabricator. The other two players presumably weren’t in it, if there were five of them.

Yea I’ve encountered this glitch, but it’s something that got forced on us lol. on the 8th I think, we were trying to play horde but almost every time it’d make us ALL kaits, so we kept having to back out of lobbies until it let us play as our selected characters. was annoying af.

I hate the slowness. Movement feels severely restricted, not being able to shoot coming out of the roadie run is balls but the general delay between shots with the gnasher is what annoys me the most. Slowing all this down while making the rifles meta is ruining the pvp experience for me.

Besides that, I think this is a pretty solid gears instalment. Campaign is just :ok_hand:.

Hard disagree about the inverse omen. It doesn’t make the game more difficult. It’s just another thing put in the game to give people free kills. Just another thing that removes any kind of fair fight from the game. You no longer have to kill your opponent first, you simply have to damage them first and then they’re basically dead already.

except when it’s you who gets the first hit. Shoot em point blank, hit all your pellets, does 24% damage. They turn around, dead in 1 hit.

That’s an unrelated issue. That’s just Gnashers being Gnashers lol. The inverse omen is just another layer of bulls**t that interferes with the ability to have fair fights.

Tbh I think it’s the hitboxes or just the servers that are the real problem. It’s happened to me with weapons other than the gnasher. Trust me tho, no gears gnasher has been as bad as this, not even gears 2 or gears 3 gnasher.

Yeah, I agree. I cant tell if it’s the servers, or the hitboxes, or spread damage, but something is wrong.

I strictly play for the co-op pve aspects of a game (aka vs ai, campaign, and horde in the case of Gears) having said that:

Horde: other than being able to upgrade gear and not the fabricator and the building limitations of anyone not playing engineer (forcing people to let the engineer actually do their job) I honestly think gears 4 horde was far better. The barriers in gears 5 are so fragile there’s almost no point in upgrading them. Sure they do more damage at higher levels, but not even enough to warrant the amount of repairs you constantly have to make on it. The ammo on sentries seems to drain much faster than g4, like ridiculously quick, and even with max efficiency it takes way too long to repair the entries. My last issue is how little ammo you get after each wave. It’s not like the enemies drop a good variety, they’re usually carrying P.O.S. guns and I always end up running out of ammo like half way through the wave. All in all, if I knew enough players, I’d rather do a LFG party for horde on gears 4 than play horde gears 5, unfortunately, on G4 you either play by yourself, or randos who are idiots/think they’re all engineers.

Campaign: Wasn’t great, but wasn’t bad. Felt a little drab but didn’t have me falling asleep playing (like halo 3 literally did #shotsfired) jokes aside, campaign was pretty solid overall

As for versus, even with the co-op vs ai. It doesn’t really interest me that much, so haven’t played it much except for when required by the tour of duty

I only got it for the campaign, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I went through on Normal, Experienced, and Insane. My only disappointment is that there’s no Inconceivable mode, and it definitely needs one because what you can do with Jack otherwise makes it a bit too easy.

At first I was pretty annoyed, because I too got a fair bit of crashing. However I had just updated to build 1903 in W10, and Wolfenstein Youngblood was also crashing a lot. As it turned out, the last cumulative update for 1903 fixed the crashing for me though.

I love the things they added to 5, Jack (even if a bit too OP), the Matriarch, the Warden, the Stump, the Flock, the Kraken, the Bastions, the Rejects, the Popper, and the Leech. The ways to use the enviro are good too, like shooting huge icicles over them, and ice under them.

The skiff was pretty cool too, and being able to carry two heavy weapons on it. Despite the game overall feeling a bit easier than the typical GoW titles, there were still parts that were very challenging and frustrating on Insane that kept you immersed and engaged in combat.

The room in Research Lab where you have to Defeat the Flock comes to mind. Most Flock battles I didn’t struggle with, but in that fight there’s only two of you in a small dark room, and that Flock is tough and throws tons of Leeches at you.

The time I beat it on Insane after several failed attempts, I freaked out because the double doors you’re supposed to be able to exit did not have an interactive icon to use them. After a LONG silent pause, over 30 seconds if not a minute, the door icon finally appeared.

I also then noticed that the battle area has some pipes where the ceiling and wall meet in places that if shot at release that yellow gas, so there might be an easier way to beat that objective. However it’s very hard to see those gas pipes in the dark without TAC-COM, and even then, it can be hard to see which side of walls they’re on.
