Gears Tactics first impressions

My PC says it’s got a 1060. Shouldn’t be an issue if that’s an accurate reading(it came preassembled, was a birthday gift, don’t know its specs off the back of my head). I have limited experience with turn based strategy and the gameplay might not be the main drawing factor for me(although if I had a total disinterest in it, I wouldn’t even consider it). It’s not something I frequently touch, in the same way that I don’t do RTS much(mostly the Halo Wars games). Haven’t even played XCOM, if that says something. But I’d be open to giving this a try since I have some interest in its story.

1060 should be fine GPU wise. At a rough guess your CPU wouldn’t have an issue either.

If possible install on an SSD not a hard drive.

I think when people hear "turn based strategy " they instantly think “slow” but with all the stuff going on, and remembering who has what skills and how many turns till i can use it again, trying to anticipate what enemies will do next? It really keeps you busy and thinking. Its like having a long series of dynamic puzzles, with the added satisfaction of gears style and gore.

I don’t know for sure if I have an SSD. There is a 2 TB storage space on my PC that is largely unused which I never paid much attention to. Maybe I should. I’ll just take a quick look at what I can find, since I woke up after an hour of sleep and can’t seem to fall back asleep yet.

Other question : Steam or not for the purchase/download? Does it require a Microsoft login to get into the game(it’s not an issue since I’ve clearly got an account, just asking)? I’ve never bought an MS game on Steam so exactly zero experience there.

@yeatersm I was definitely not under the impression things would be slow, that much my limited turn based strategy experience has told me. But within those limits I have also very little base to imagine what it is actually like. All I know is that when I was playing Halo Wars I’d spend a lot of time building a base or two and getting an army ready and then spending another good while fighting the AI, at least on the higher difficulties.

That would be a hard drive (extremely unlikely you have a 2TB SSD).

Steam all the way in my opinion. You still sign in with an xbox live account.

That being said if you have gamepass ultimate you do get it on the MS Store as part of your subscription.

Nah, I canceled my GPU subscription back in December. I don’t play many games so it wasn’t worth keeping it for me, over just buying what I like and keeping a Gold sub for if I want to access the multiplayer content.

I would absolutely go steam then.

MS Store on PC often breaks games with its updates and downloads can be super slow. Steam is far superior in that regard. @Krylon_Blue also recently paid for the steam version just to get away from the MS Store.

Yeah, I haven’t heard much positive stuff about the MS Store on PC. Seems kind of like a waste to leave it in that state.

Now, this is what I can readily and easily find without opening my PC case…
16 GB (installed? don’t know why it says that) RAM
Intel Core i7-6700 @3.40 GHz(don’t know how good that is, but I can run most games at high 1080p settings and usually remain within or above 60 FPS)
Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 6 GB(reminds me I haven’t updated my drivers in a while)
Windows 10 Home, version 1903(if there’s a new build out by now I’m not aware of it).

Don’t know if there’s any other relevant required information. I’d say this is more or less a standard mid-range PC. Nothing fancy like Envii’s or yours, but it gets things done well enough for me.

Your specs are fine, only annoying thing will be load times if you are on a HDD.

I don’t think I ever have had an SSD in any of my devices yet. Tried looking into the various storage units on the machine but can’t seem to find conclusive information as to what type they are. All I know is one of them is nearly full while the other storage unit has 1.81 TB and is basically empty, but I refrained from moving files or installing anything on it due to the uncertainty of whether I even can do so.

A program called Speccy is free and will tell you detailed information about your machines hardware, including temperatures.

Well here are the results… if they’re readable?

Apparently my nearly full storage unit is an SSD? The more you know. The 283 GB Samsung. Wasn’t even aware.

Nice, install it on that drive

After I free up some space. It says it’s just got about 16 GB left free, not that that’s an issue with nearly 2 TB of free space on the other drive.

Would you recommend the new Xcom which just came out and is on sale for under $10 currently or this?

Yessir.

I had Gears 5, Halo MCC and Gears Tactics for another 2.5 years due to that $1 Game Pass deal. I still bought them on Steam to avoid the Microsoft Store and will do the same with Forza Motorsport 8 and Halo Infinite

So kind of an R-rated Toy Soldiers game?

I havent played the new xcom yet, but from what I’ve seen Tactics is more complete imo, if you have the $ for it then I’d say go for Tactics, but If you dont and dont want to join gamepass to play it cheaper then Chimera squad should satisfy what you’re looking for.

I agree 100%. I’m playing on expert difficulty and just by using overwatch first and throwing grenades i’m unstoppable. I love the skill tree and the customization too, the cutscenes are also a good addition but in terms of gameplay both in and out of combat i think there is room for improvements. To be honest after 15 hours in the side quests started to be kind of boring and not really worth doing. Unlike XCOM they don’t feel unique and on par with the main quests. You don’t get useful resources or personal that helps you upgrade your base, your troops, research new projects ecc…the management part is missing, I like the game but this is such an opportunity lost in my opinion to do something really cool in the style of XCOM without being a direct copy. Can you imagine how cool that would be? To be able to improve your base, train and heal your troops, research new skills, weapons, ecc…

So, after about two or three days of playing(and a couple of hours jostling the Hydra’s attacks while attempting to control the reinforcement flow), I finished the story…

I think it’s pretty great, all in all, everything considered. Fits in decently well if you ask me, though the question of Ukkon’s presence at New Hope going unmentioned up until now is odd, even if Niles would’ve considered him “precious” enough that he didn’t trust anyone with the knowledge of Ukkon… but who knows.

Gameplay, was ok, though I did do the entire playthrough on Beginner since I didn’t have much experience with turn based strategy up to now(and probably still don’t have a lot more, bet I’m making many mistakes that a more experienced player would shake their head at), and the Brumak and MOD EDIT: SPOILER REMOVED. would seem… complicated on higher difficulties, to say the least, considering I spent a significant amount of time just fighting off the reinforcements in the MOD EDIT: SPOILER REMOVED.fight alone while avoiding its attacks. Well for the Brumak it might seem tricky until you get rid of its arm guns at least. Rarely felt bored, though some of the side missions occasionally got a bit drab or repetitive when I just wanted to move on with the main story. May go through it on higher difficulties at some point again eventually, but not decided on that and whether it’d be something I even should attempt.

Customization is nice, though I didn’t really make use of it. Do appreciate all of the individual voices for the various Gears instead of just having one generic male and female voice shared across all of them. Wish they had that sort of variety in the mainline games or let us choose a voice for them.

Question time : What actually is Ukkon? He’s like some sort of super mutant. He looks like a Kantus superficially, but that’s about where it ends. He doesn’t have the same voice, and his physiology doesn’t quite look Kantus. MOD EDIT: SPOILER REMOVED… clearly isn’t a Sire either, given that he has a more… stable body and functioning mind. Does he thrive off of Imulsion or is there something else going on with those canisters he needs from the Nedroma health institute? It wasn’t clear to me from the hints provided in-game for what purpose he needed those, if it was to amplify his healing abilities, or just to be able to continue living.

I also wonder if Prescott ever looked further into Ukkon’s disappearance or whether Gabe was still alive when he would suspect he would have been killed by the Hammer strike. Maybe he didn’t since Gabe was still alive for long enough to have Kait with Reyna… or he just left him be, but that doesn’t seem very Prescott-y, particularly due to the nature of what Gabe learned through Sid about New Hope. Just as many questions as answers.
