Gears Tactics first impressions

No idea, guess you would have to ask the OP.

It’s sortttaaaaa like an RTS game

The game won’t even install for me.

So, you know, my first impressions aren’t great.

RTS is defined by “real time” and base building. This game has neither.

Its closer to chess than it is to an RTS.

So, if no one minds… I had asked for some advice on whether it’d be a good idea to get this in my position or not, but I don’t feel it deserves to be a thread of its own. Would simply appreciate an answer.

I think its a great game,

But it depends on if you like turn based strategy or not, and if you have a PC than can run it. Some older hardware, like a 960 for example, has trouble running the game.

My PC says it’s got a 1060. Shouldn’t be an issue if that’s an accurate reading(it came preassembled, was a birthday gift, don’t know its specs off the back of my head). I have limited experience with turn based strategy and the gameplay might not be the main drawing factor for me(although if I had a total disinterest in it, I wouldn’t even consider it). It’s not something I frequently touch, in the same way that I don’t do RTS much(mostly the Halo Wars games). Haven’t even played XCOM, if that says something. But I’d be open to giving this a try since I have some interest in its story.

1060 should be fine GPU wise. At a rough guess your CPU wouldn’t have an issue either.

If possible install on an SSD not a hard drive.

I think when people hear "turn based strategy " they instantly think “slow” but with all the stuff going on, and remembering who has what skills and how many turns till i can use it again, trying to anticipate what enemies will do next? It really keeps you busy and thinking. Its like having a long series of dynamic puzzles, with the added satisfaction of gears style and gore.

I don’t know for sure if I have an SSD. There is a 2 TB storage space on my PC that is largely unused which I never paid much attention to. Maybe I should. I’ll just take a quick look at what I can find, since I woke up after an hour of sleep and can’t seem to fall back asleep yet.

Other question : Steam or not for the purchase/download? Does it require a Microsoft login to get into the game(it’s not an issue since I’ve clearly got an account, just asking)? I’ve never bought an MS game on Steam so exactly zero experience there.

@yeatersm I was definitely not under the impression things would be slow, that much my limited turn based strategy experience has told me. But within those limits I have also very little base to imagine what it is actually like. All I know is that when I was playing Halo Wars I’d spend a lot of time building a base or two and getting an army ready and then spending another good while fighting the AI, at least on the higher difficulties.

That would be a hard drive (extremely unlikely you have a 2TB SSD).

Steam all the way in my opinion. You still sign in with an xbox live account.

That being said if you have gamepass ultimate you do get it on the MS Store as part of your subscription.

Nah, I canceled my GPU subscription back in December. I don’t play many games so it wasn’t worth keeping it for me, over just buying what I like and keeping a Gold sub for if I want to access the multiplayer content.

I would absolutely go steam then.

MS Store on PC often breaks games with its updates and downloads can be super slow. Steam is far superior in that regard. @Krylon_Blue also recently paid for the steam version just to get away from the MS Store.

Yeah, I haven’t heard much positive stuff about the MS Store on PC. Seems kind of like a waste to leave it in that state.

Now, this is what I can readily and easily find without opening my PC case…
16 GB (installed? don’t know why it says that) RAM
Intel Core i7-6700 @3.40 GHz(don’t know how good that is, but I can run most games at high 1080p settings and usually remain within or above 60 FPS)
Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 6 GB(reminds me I haven’t updated my drivers in a while)
Windows 10 Home, version 1903(if there’s a new build out by now I’m not aware of it).

Don’t know if there’s any other relevant required information. I’d say this is more or less a standard mid-range PC. Nothing fancy like Envii’s or yours, but it gets things done well enough for me.

Your specs are fine, only annoying thing will be load times if you are on a HDD.

I don’t think I ever have had an SSD in any of my devices yet. Tried looking into the various storage units on the machine but can’t seem to find conclusive information as to what type they are. All I know is one of them is nearly full while the other storage unit has 1.81 TB and is basically empty, but I refrained from moving files or installing anything on it due to the uncertainty of whether I even can do so.

A program called Speccy is free and will tell you detailed information about your machines hardware, including temperatures.

Well here are the results… if they’re readable?

Apparently my nearly full storage unit is an SSD? The more you know. The 283 GB Samsung. Wasn’t even aware.

Nice, install it on that drive

After I free up some space. It says it’s just got about 16 GB left free, not that that’s an issue with nearly 2 TB of free space on the other drive.
