Gears Tactics first impressions

If I’m not mistaken I think Gears of War was originally suppose to be an RTS game. I could be completely wrong about that but the idea is floating around in my head for some reason.

What are everyone’s impressions so far? I’ve never been into RTS games before so I went into this as a complete noob and was a little overwhelmed at first but I got used to all the different tactics and how to navigate your screen.

Honestly if it wasn’t for Halo Wars or Gears Tactics I would probably have never touched this genre of games.

I think it’s an interesting twist on Gears. I wouldn’t mind seeing different takes on this franchise.

Well not really an impression cause I’ve beaten it, but aside from rescue missions I think it’s a pretty good game, would happily welcome a Gears Tactics 2

I think it is excellent. Unfortunately my missus laptop barely runs it and I get a “critical error” during every match…but even with that the game (played Act 1) is great fun and very “Gears”

It plays , at least on a basic level like Gearspop. That is not a criticism of course. Obviously it is a lot deeper , the point being it is very accessible.

Also , we are fighting Locusts once again :+1::+1:

So far, at the difficulty below ironman it doesnt seem very balanced. The game is throwing tons of enemies at you without the abilites / equipment to dps them down fast enough, particularly the “do x before n number of turns” missions. Just cleared 1-3 and I had to keep restarting until rng let me kill the grenadier before he one shot me.

I liked XCOM but its too slow at times, gears is perfect as it speeds things up, and just looks better in presentation in my opinion. I wanted an actual RTS like halo wars for gears, but im happy to say that this was a better route for gears.

I believe your thinking of Halo. Gears (i believe) was always supposed to be a cover shooter. Epic had done unreal tournament for so long and wanted to do something slower paced and more tactical.

It was never an RTS, for whatever reason people compared it to Halo Wars and assumed it was real time, despite the gameplay showing otherwise.

Tactics is not an RTS, it is a TBS (turn based strategy and real time strategy, there is a huuuuge difference).

I’m having a blast so far, reminds me of the customization and tree skill from Dawn of War 2 mixed with the gameplay of Shadow Run and Xcom. All of them great games so a pretty good mix in the end.

Like the genre or not this is gears, so you get to chainsaw grubs and do executions to your heart content.

First Impression from a tactics player but not a gears player, is that it’s good, but not great. I will say this was all on experienced difficulty. The UI has some issues where things arent super clear (such as why some enemies have obstructions and others dont despite obstacles being between them and you on both), overwatch is too powerful and promotes camping early which hugely slows it down to the point that to play well its all about overwatching. Part of this is because of how low percentage the normal shots are, and for some reason OW seems to have a much higher chance to hit in general. The range penalties are insane in this game. I’ve been told its because they are trying to stay true to Gears proper but in this case its to the detriment of the tactics game. I shouldn’t have a -30% to hit on someone in 5 minutes with a shotgun. It has the same problem with difficulty and fun that a lot of these games have, in that its a slog early before you get strong characters and equipment, but later it becomes too easy.

While that’s a lot of complaining overall I do like the game and think its probably a 7/10. I really like the skills trees and the options it gives you, I like the customization of the weapons, though wish it was less about very small bonuses early and more about cool passives. The characters are fun and the missions are generally well paced after early game. The ability to combo executions into other executions is fairly nice, though I had to turn off the dynamic camera as watching the cut scene for it every time. I like the ability to one shot things with bayonet/chainsaw,

Anyway, as mentioned, probably a 7/10.

Let’s assume I don’t know what that means …because I don’t know what that means. Lol

These forums are often abbreviation heavy and I seldom know what people are talking about. I.e PVE? Never heard of that outside of this forum.

Ever since Gears of War (The 1st one) I’ve loved the entire franchise. Gears Tactics isn’t exactly the type of game i would normally play but considered trying it since it was a “Gears of War” game.
I absolutely love Gears Tactics. It is a bit difficult for me but i do love challenging games.
In my opinion great job on the game and the Gears developers never cease to amaze me.
Thanks for the great game. :metal:

PvE usually stands for Player versus Environment, aka AI, from my understanding.

RTS stands for Real Time Strategy. Games like Halo Wars fall into that category since you’re managing a base, units, and the battlefield, in real time. That’s a basic explanation of it anyway.

Different question not related to post this is in response to :

Would anyone recommend getting this game if I’m not into turn based strategy games a lot(have barely played any, never played XCOM, if that says anything), but have some interest in the game’s story? Also just looking for something else to get my hands on besides just playing Gears 5 90% of the time.

And if I did get it, is Steam the better option? Anything special like an MS account(I have one, that’s not the thing I wanna ask) required that might involve special steps if I played it on Steam? Or should I just wait for the console release instead of getting it on my PC?

Is that where it comes from?

I assumed the OP was thinking of Halo: Combat Evolved. Before Microsoft announced Halo on Xbox, the game was being designed as an RTS. Microsoft actually got them to change it to an FPS.

All I can say is thank you Microsoft. Lol.

Yes, most of the comments I have seen from people who mislabel tactics is saying it’s like Halo Wars.

I was referring to the idea that Gears of War was originally meant to be an RTS when it was in fact Halo that was. Not the comparison.

No idea, guess you would have to ask the OP.

It’s sortttaaaaa like an RTS game

The game won’t even install for me.

So, you know, my first impressions aren’t great.

RTS is defined by “real time” and base building. This game has neither.

Its closer to chess than it is to an RTS.

So, if no one minds… I had asked for some advice on whether it’d be a good idea to get this in my position or not, but I don’t feel it deserves to be a thread of its own. Would simply appreciate an answer.

I think its a great game,

But it depends on if you like turn based strategy or not, and if you have a PC than can run it. Some older hardware, like a 960 for example, has trouble running the game.
