Gears Tactics - Corrupt install

Had the same problem as OP. The game worked fine until a few days ago. When I tried to start it yesterday it suddenly disappeared. Not sure if after updating the windows store or applying any updates. Anyhow trying to redownload the game just gave me the spinning circle icon and nothing happened.

After playing detective for a few hours, I deleted the installation folder of the game which is located under C:/Program Files/WindowsApps/microsoft.GanderBaseGame_1.0.99.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe.

Restarting the computer gave me some error messages saying that the game files were missing, but after applying the following commands on elevated power shell and restarting once more the game is downloading again. The error messages did not show up again either.

Try reinstalling gaming services. To do this:
Launch powershell as an administrator and enter “get-appxpackage Microsoft.GamingServices | remove-AppxPackage -allusers”
In the same powershell window, enter “start ms-windows-store://pdp/?productid=9MWPM2CQNLHN”
Install the app on that page, including accepting the UAC prompt when shown.
Try installing the game again.

I hope it helps.

Hi Merlezz,

How did you delete the file from WindowsApps? - I have located the file but cannot delete it?

Cheers,
Kruupy.

Hi kruupy,

First you need to add yourself as the owner to the “WindowsApps” folder and inherit that to all sub-folders. Therefore make sure to tick “inherit to sub-folders” once you have added your user as the owner. This inheritance option does only appear on the security tab after adding yourself.

At first it wouldn’t let me delete the folder mentioned above either. Clicking “retry” then did the trick eventually. If that still does not work however, you may be able to delete it with an elevated explorer.exe process.

Please refer to these guides if you do not know how to change file / folder permissions on Windows:

Let me know if this works for you.

I followed these instructions, manually deleting the folder and reinstalling game services as you posted there, and I still get no progress on the download.

Downloaded ProtonVPN, pressed download… now I have progressed further on the download than before.

Out of curiosity, where are people based that are having this issue? If I’m using a VPN and downloading just fine while connected through Europe, does that mean nobody in Europe is having this issue? For reference, I’m in Australia.

EDIT: Turned off VPN but it gets stuck at: 3.9GB, 6.1GB, 23GB

I am in Australia as well @WomBatman7770 - are Aussies being targeted!?

I think this is the issue, it’s a Microsoft blocking Australian downloads because I have the same issue

Australian here too, stuck at 649MB

Yup Australian here aswell, the aussie hate is real lol

So that’s the issue. I periodically turned on a VPN to get around the points where it got stuck and it’s all downloaded now. I’ll try playing it later.

Bug:

  • Australians were trying to play the game, but can’t

Fix:

  • Pretend to be from somewhere else in the world using a VPN

EDIT: Just noticed that OP is from the UK, so his issue appears to be a separate one to ours. But maybe it can be fixed using the same method?

yeap i’m in australia as well.

I have mine working now too.

You DO NOT have to delete your existing game and re-download. There is a 1.4GB patch which is the only thing you need to download via the VPN. Here is the steps I went through:

  1. Open Microsoft Store (note not the Xbox Beta App).
  2. Go to “Downloads and Updates” and click the blue “Get updates” button. This will then find the 1.4GB update.
  3. Signup for ProtonVPN (free), install ProtonVPN software and connect.
  4. Start the patch download in the Microsoft Store.
  5. Once patch has downloaded, run the game.

I hope that this helps all, I am very glad to be back in game. Microsoft seriously need to fix this issue that is effecting aussies.

Cheers,
Kruupy.

True, if you’re stuck downloading the patch then you only need to download the patch with the vpn. But for those of us that uninstalled it (because we couldn’t download the patch…) we could not download past 246.1mb of the full game download. So it seems that the fix is applicable for anyone currently stuck downloading the game or the patch.

Yep I couldn’t access the patch through the xbox beta app but I could initiate the download through the Microsoft Store program.

Exact same issue here (Australian as well), download was getting stuck at 246.1MB and all the advice: Running wsreset, signing out, deleting game services didn’t work.

Jumped on a VPN that allows you to change geolocation (Can confirm US servers will work) and the file downloaded perfectly fine. Since we don’t know when this will be resolved, recommend that if you want to play, grab a free trial for a well regarded VPN or something.

protonvpn has 7 days free trial, with about 2.5MB/s download speed as far as i can tell.

Australian here as well. It’s not a location issue, but rather a server caching issue (I guess), because I connected to an Australian server with ProtonVPN and it worked just fine. Was getting about 4.5MB/s with the free 7 day trial thing.

When I had a similar issue with Division 2, it seemed to be specifically a problem with Optus customers in Australia, which is why I think that issue (and similarly this one) was caused by a corrupted file cached on a local server.

And for the record - yep, it’s complete bulldust that we have to install a VPN just to get around an issue like this.

If that’s the case what can we do?

Can confirm that VPN kickstarted the download again.

I had to make sure to remove the game from the Microsoft download queue by deleteing temp files from Delivery Optimisation, then kicking off WSRESET.exe and finally rebooting my pc.

Then connected to an American server via VPN (NordVPN) and the game successfully downloaded with save file intact.

Any updates on this issue? I’m facing similar problems and VPN hasn’t worked.

Hey was having the exact issue as original post for a few weeks now (starts downloading and stops at exact same spot every time ~248MB).
-Downloaded NordVPN,
-Connected to US (& Singapore) server (from AUS),
-Opened MS Store
-Started downloading Gears
-Continue from downloading through VPN

I did disconnect from the VPN after it started the first time, and it seemed to change servers and keep downloading for while. However, it did fail after ~5min. So just stay connected to VPN if you have same issues.
