Gears of War: Bloodlines Discussion (Spoilers)

Could put this in the Tactics discussion area, but I feel it will have more conversation over here.

Spoilers Below

To those that only care about Gears 5 stuff (not tactics) I’d say the most important things are

  1. Jinn (most likely) ordered JD to do the Settlement 2 attacks

  2. A character called Lovings (and 1 other gear I think, but their name eludes me cause they werent in the boom a lot) is introduced and may be in Gears 6

  3. Jinn views JD as a son to her

  4. Hoffman told Kait to be on the lookout for the name “Ukkon” (obviously we know, but the fact he tells kait about it makes me think Ukkon could still be involved in the future somehow)

  5. The way JD is being written just feels off to me (probably just a me thing), but this just leads me to think hes the canon death sadly (I really want to be wrong)

Those are the main takeaways I got from the Kait side of the book

Now for the lore nerds who are interested in everything

  1. Wyatt is like a brother to Oscar and Gabe (they protect him in the orphanage)

  2. Gabe lives with a massive amount of guilt for soldiers dying on his orders (so he will probably be pretty upset when a random gear dies in Tactics)

  3. Prescott really only cares about the imulsion and not the soldiers (kinda obvious but still worth noting)

  4. Wyatt sacrifices himself technically on Gabes order

  5. This leads to Oscar drinking

  6. Gabe then demoted himself to work on the Montuars? (Idk how they’re spelt) after Hoffman convinces him not to resign

  7. During the battle Gabe breathed a decent amount of Imulsion causing him to contract rustlung in the future (he dies when Kait is 10 for a time reference)

  8. Oscar misses Gabes death and that’s why he stays to try and help Reyna and be a father figure to Kait

That’s all I got off the top of my head so far

“Jinn views JD as a son to her”
Poor JD… I think being dead is still better fate than this! :astonished:

I think this might’ve been an order, makes sense why he caved in with pressure from the violent protestors and his chain of command as well.

Is it because she worked closely with Anya, so after Anya’s passing she felt responsible to some extent?

Maybe he’s not still around, but has contingencies (like Niles’ backup plans)

I believe this is why he left the COG in the first place, because he felt (especially the new COG) cared less and less about their soldiers so he and Oscar met Reyna and built the Outsider village.

Minotaurs. Like the bull-headed monsters from Greek Myth.

FINALLY an answer. I thought he was either MIA or something else.

I also like the new look I have to their relationship. Myself, along with others I presume, assumed that Oscar and Reyna were brother/sister and Gabe was the marry-in. But during the Swarm attack in their village, Oscar’s looking out for Reyna because it’s all he can do to respect his brother, by protecting his younger sister-in-law and his brother’s wife to his last breath.

As for the Jinn one yes that is exactly why with her program helping Anya conceive as well

Theres also some imulsion fueled enemies in Tactics so we can assume canon wise some of those will get to Gabe as well

I have newfound likeness for Oscar, overall still dont care for him, but now that I understand him a little bit more hes okay

I never really liked his skins (other than for memes)

But I always found him a bit charming at least. Like Dizzy almost.

I haven’t finished the book yet (a little over half way) but I already like Gabe a lot, looking forward to tactics. He definitely should be in 5 as a MP character.

His ultimate should be similar to keegan, only instead of ammo, he should replenish ultimate abilities faster. And most of his skill cards should boost his teammates

I could see him giving allies a stat boost. Like maybe for 10-20 seconds everyone would gain +10% Speed and Active Rounds or something like that.

yea something support related. Or maybe another distraction ultimate like kats only more effective lol he’s supposed to be a great tactician, something to show that

With the fog of war elements in Tactics what about a universal enemy reveal? Like Fahz but for the whole team. I know I’ve said before that that’d be a good ability for Paduk but it could work for Gabe too.

There really wasnt much about JD to begin with, him being in the coma of 99% of the book. Other than people being in his hospital room JD doesnt really have any story in this. I also feel when he does finally come out of the coma hes like that with Kait because he truly doesnt know what to say.

One character you didnt mention that I loved was Blair. Maybe in a future book her and Kait could cross paths if she didnt pass away and would be a great way for Kait to learn more about her father while he was still with the COG

Yea I didnt really touch on Gabes group, they are pretty cool though

I think they did a great job with the characters in this one.

Gabes crew was great and so were the NCOG characters

Also gave you that love to hate character with Phillips

I’ve ordered the book but not received it yet.

Good read or subpar?

I enjoyed it better than his last book. It is much better

Ascendance was just ok. I read for content, but I’m not sure I’d call it pleasure.

I felt the same about Ascendance. He did a much better job with this one

Just finished up the audiobook. Macnamara does great save for the occasional mispronunciation of “Gorosnaya” and hearing her Fahz impression.
The story itself was great, I was hooked for lots of it, especially with Gabe’s story. Kait, Oscar and Jinn get a lot more depth and I’m loving Jinn as an antagonist. She’s the right foil for Kait. And once again Hoffman continues to be awesome.

There was a lot less focus on JD than I expected. I hope there’s something more for him later down the road during his recovery and his relationship with Fahz before Act 3 in Gears 5.

As for death speculations, I don’t think his lack of story will necessarily mean he’ll be the canon death. However personally I’d be okay with either death being canon. There’s a lot of impact to be had for plenty of characters if one of them goes, and I’d be down for either a JD & Kait or Kait & Marcus campaign.

I just don’t want a full Kait and Del campaign unless Del gets a change in character. I like him and his role in 5 but the awkward levity from him during serious situations has overstayed its welcome for me.
His backtalk with Kait when she tells him to get out of the Condor when the Flock attack in Bloodlines is even more of that and it just made me groan.

How good is her Fahz impression? Had me in stitches.
