This Kait AAPE, what a shame…
I agree it doesn’t look great. But this is just my opinion. Even I probably won’t get it anyway.
Better than the game getting WOKE
Gears 1 basically had no explanation or backstory as well:
“14 years after E-day”… wut? What’s E-day?
“I’m getting you out!” … why? why was he in prison in the first place?
“Are you THE Marcus Fenix? The one who fought at Aspho Fields?” … fought at the what?
“A traitor like you doesn’t deserve the uniform”… why what? Why is he a traitor?
All you knew is that you were a former convict, fighting to survive against a hellish monster army in an apocalyptic world. In a way, that was a strength of Gears 1 as you had absolutely no idea what to expect. But that still doesn’t excuse the lack of explanation. Most of the explanation came at a far later stage, it has taken years before we got to know what Aspho Fields stands for.
The story needed to make the jump for several reasons:
a) You can’t expect humanity to have raised civilization so quickly a few years after the ending of the war.
b) You can’t keep relying on the same characters all the time. Eventually, you’ll run out of story. Now Delta can still continue on the background while the main game is being done by new characters that can last for several future Gears releases.
I’m not sure where you’re getting those hentai tentacles from. Are you talking about the Lambent of Gears 3?
Gears 4 was establishing a new saga, which isn’t easy. Pretty much everybody who played Gears pre-Gears 4 had to get used to the new characters, most didn’t like them at first. I had to get used to them as well. Now with Gears 5 is when the real show starts: you more or less got to see the ‘innocence’ of JD, Del and Kait in Gears 4, now you get to see them in a whole different light. With the Swarm introduced, there’s a whole lot more to develop them as well.
On top of that: this is plotwise the most interesting storyline so far. Rather than the ‘fight the bad guys and win the day’ cliché, we aren’t even sure about what is going to happen to the main protagonist. Basically, this is the least predictable storyline we’ve had. And this campaign is going to include a whole lot of history from the previous instalments.
You could not have said it any better.
Gears 5 I just saw in the achievements list has 4 campaigns only.
Well, it was a fun ride tho until Gears 3 (Gears 3 included).
So what??? We dont know how many Chapters are in each Act
This is all you need to know that it won’t matter.
" Gears 5 features “the largest campaign ever made” for the series. Gears 5 is set to be The Coalition’s biggest game to date, with each element of the game larger and more fully-featured than any game that’s come before in the Gears series."
Lerger, largest, woo hoo.
Quality though is key.
Setting aside the epitome of garbage, I mean the woeful tech test…
What has been shown far…looks just about okish as far as general gaming goes, I guess…looks very poor, actually no, looks abysmal, for a Gears game.
The previous Gears Campaigns couldn’t be played in 4K, 60 FPS anyway. But I’m more interested in Gears 5 Campaign than I ever been with previous ones.
Hey if Tc is gonna add Kat and Emile from Halo:Reach , can you guys also add Jorge?? Since we all know the halo isn’t going anywhere…
One thing I am truly excited about is seeing what kind of easter eggs/lore secrets are in the Campaign

My use of ‘looks’ was a little more general.
Regardless, if the gameplay is rubbish - tech test indicates this is a very real (and disappointing) possibility - 4k, 60fps, mean very little.
Put another way…
For many years I was under the impression that you cannot polish a turd. A video on youtube dispelled that myth. But the people in the vid were still left with a turd.
I honestly thought the gameplay was much better than Gears 1 to 4. But what matters to you when it comes to gameplay? The smoothness, cover mechanics, executions, all that contributes to gameplay. It was pretty good when I was playing Arcade for Tech Test.
I just didn’t find that.
I thought the smoothness was lacking, roadie running into cover, some of the mantles feeling off, dropping down an elevation (has that ever felt good!?!). Cover mechs were ok but a bit too GoWJ feeling for my tastes (although I really like a lot of GoWJ). Executions (and blood splatters) being treated as cosmetics is a big no. Marks too, but less egregious I guess.
The weapon reticules, the weapon ammo counts and reserves, the general gunplay - sounds, handling, recoil - just felt off. The new omen is a needless change that has the potential to hinder play (well for top players, so not me, but it still looks woeful). Nades felt off, but I guess that could just have been the poor servers. Flashbangs were criminally inconsistent, again could just have been a server issue. Just the overall feel, for me, is far far removed from a classic Gears title.
Also, this might just be me, but I had an issue with my character’s footsteps being far too loud in the tech test at times, then dropping off and sounding like an approaching enemy, only for me to look around, see no one, then the volume of my own footsteps jumps up again, and so on.
I get it. TC need to make this series their own now. It also needs to move on. I just get the sense that some changes were made purely for the sake of change as opposed to considering what is best for the series and fans going forward.
I’m also hugely concerned at how playable the online aspects will be. The tech test was abysmal in that regard, G4 has had a litany of issues throughout it’s life, and I have very little confidence in TC having the necessary skills / tools / infrastructure / whatever-else-is-required to provide that quality online experience, regardless of the quality of the gameplay.
Now that’s not all the elements that matter to me. Immersion in the world, the look and feel and sounds of the environments around you, hugely important - so the garish tech test maps didn’t do it for me, but that’s 2 maps, hence why I watch what else I can.
Horde is a big draw for me. I don’t care about skins, looks don’t affect my skill or lack thereof. I don’t like the hero concept, but I haven’t tried it, so if I do bother to install the game that could well change. But I do care about being needlessly limited in any regard when there is no need to do so.
And I’m drifitng way off tech test discussion.
I do have one question, not just to you, but to anyone (although you do seem to be a hugely active poster so you may have the answer)…does anyone know at what point in the game’s dev cycle that TC knew G5 would essentially be a freebie?
It pretty much already feels like a freebie, when bought with £1 Game Pass Ultimate. But if you’re on about only buying Gears 5 UE full game for £69.99, then maybe in few years time.
Yeah, my question does read a little off, a pointless ‘that’.
The game is a freebie as you say (and I poorly said).
I’m curious at what point in the game’s dev cycle, did TC become aware that the game would essentially be free to the vast majority of players?
Was this always the case, or was dev started with a view to G5 only being a full priced retail game, then part way through MS inform them that it will be a GP title?
When Gears tries to mesh in other games, it fails.
As in,
5 seems to have been influenced by Fortnite and CoD more than ever.
The graphics and customisations straight outta Fortnite with an emphasis on strafing.
CoD for the new Lancer which feels so much like a gun from that universe now and a renewed focus on “Rifle Meta” rather than a mixture.
The option to customize your player/weapon skins isn’t bad on it’s own.
What makes MP look like “Fortnite” is player’s choice. So you should blame those who put on rainbow blast skins (no one actually does that) and go to MP, but not TC.
And now this is real joke.
Just because Gears of war 5 visuals don’t consist of grey only (the other color is red) it becomes “Fortnite influenced”. Did I get it right?
Gears of War (first of its name) made its’ mark for being a gloomy, bleak, post-apocalyptic, hopeless type of Sci-Fi/Horror game. That’s what was so charming about it and the reason why it gained its niche gamer base. A simple chronological comparison of the evolution of the game franchise reveals it got slapped around after each iteration by Barbie’s Fairy Secret’s Dust Wand.
