Gears identity crisis?

I was just saying the same thing to my wife…

Oh…sorry man…but most of your arguement was nonsensical or just plain wrong…couldn’t care to reply to it all…no offense.

People ALWAYS feel this way when a game comes out. Games change and evolve. It happens. Sometimes it’s for the better, sometimes it isn’t. Personally I don’t think having additional character skins or weapon skins takes anything away from the experience. In the context of this thread though, personally I think equating the addition of weapon and character skins with an erosion of the feel of the game is nonsense.

If every Gears game was gritty, things would get boring pretty quickly.

Gears 9 is a gritty shooter that looks the same as every other game in the franchise, and requires no artistic flair.

Every franchise, for better or worse, has to evolve to maintain interest. There’s only so far you can go with a gritty look and style before it gets boring. You can ask for the same thing every time, but at what point do you go, “I want something different?”

What made Gears good, for me, is the thought in the campaign and universe. The movement and crazy weapons. Smooth cover-based gameplay.

Oh wait. Its still there. Moving on.

Let me FIX your problems.

DO NOT USE THEM !

Play with GoW characters.

You won’t see Terminators and Sarah Connor in single player portion of the game.

Not to mention people started to complain that the gritty realistic brown and grey military shooters were getting old. Color doesn’t mean there isn’t grit, it just makes the world more alive and honestly more realistic. The real world is gritty but forests and deserts aren’t just unsaturated amalgamations of brown and grey like Gears 1/2. I think the 2018 trailer showed off a lot of color, and it keeps interest, like the older Jack Kirby comic books, color helps.

This conversation was had and finished years ago. Once they introduced the really crazy skins that was a wrap. I was annoyed but tbh it made and still makes no difference. As long as it’s kept to MP its fine.

And the single player has me way more hyped that 4. The idea that perhaps Kait become the new queen, or just the phrase “When the blood on your hands runs through your veins” and “Bound by Blood” have the feel of old, Brothers Till The End, they seem to fall in line.

I am hyped and intrigued.

Personally I don’t care about the Halo, T1000 and Sarah Connor skins.

I do care about those degenerate rappers nobody ever heard of. Not only did it not make any sense to include them apart from making those 2 individuels happy, the high volume of their voices made it two of the most annying characters ever included in any Microsoft IP.

Ice T is still welcome though.

So…opinion. personally I hate Anthony but I wouldn’t say he’s so terrible that he shouldn’t exist because “everyone must bend to my will, this game was made for ME.”

As a new player to Gears will I played through part of 2 but didn’t finish and have only played 4 and the tech test for 5 I don’t have a right to really comment but I will. I’m going back and playing through the old games and I have 5 preordered. Trying to catch up on the lore as well.

My thoughts so far I prefer some parts of 4s gameplay as opposed to 1. The controls feel tighter to me. I liked the story line of 4 very interested in 5. Right now I’m finding 1 to be interesting as well. I like good intriguing storylines so far I’m good. I suck at MP mostly because I’m used to FPS-yes COD- i suck at that one too lol. I’m giving Gears a chance and so far I’m pleased with both the newest game-4 and the old game. But hey just my thoughts on the matter. As far as the skins go… blah don’t bother me any I played COD remember LOL!!

I’ve already sent Rod a letter. The ink is ■■■■■■ up though (written letters are way more personal) because I couldn’t stop crying whilst writing it. I poured my heart and soul into it, imploring Rod to remove those 2.

I agree to a certain extent. I don’t mind the skins because its for mp its supposed to be fun nonetheless . But the identity crisis I see is overall the look and vibe of the games. I harp on this a lot but gears 4 doesn’t have that dark and violent tone that gears 1-2 presented. Its just hard to take serious.

I think the gore being toned down plays a big part in that aspect, new lead characters, and the locust being absent.

Gears 5 looks goood tbh story and gameplay wise. Its really just the gore is not like Gears 1-2 is the biggest disappointment.

I wish they just made everything in the game gears of war related, due to them including terminator or halo skins, we might once again miss out on that chance for harper to be in MP because time was wasted putting other non gears related characters into the game.

Surely the majority of people would rather a gears character other something from another franchise.

Pros and cons.

On the one hand, we don’t get Aspho Bernie or Aspho Marcus or Carlos. Or Harper. We might not even get some of the best characters from Gears 4’s MP.

But at least the Halo and Terminator characters will drum up interest and make the player base healthier. And there are people who love those characters, and will play as them constantly. Some have wanted Terminator skins in the game since Gears 2. And people have wanted a Master Chief character in Gears MP since Gears 1.

Games are like bands. Few solid straight good all the way through albums, then a collaboration ep, then the sit ins, then co headlining tour. Next thing you know 4 CD later they’re on the Honda civic tour. Takes a really dedicated team to remain organic in media arts these days.

Black Tusk/TC had a hard job with gears 4 because they were trying to cater to newer and older fans while trying to make gears fresh again because every installment of gears has been different. While I want gears to be like 1 or 2, I’m glad that TC’s version of gears has become it’s own thing with it’s own identity. As the saying goes “You can’t please all of the people all of the time” and there has to be a balance. While I don’t particularly mind the new colourblast characters* (because I’ll never use them and they’re kept solely to MP), Gears has always been a dark and gritty game and for me TC is taking away what made me fall in love with Gears in the first place. I’ll still play gears 5 and I am exicted for it but all the colour/less gore, the new main characters and the look of the swarm is ruining my immersion of Gears of war. It’s almost like adding spiderman to hannibal or scarface movies. It doesn’t belong but unfortunately is here to stay.

TLDR: Give me Gears UE with a custom games browser and I’m peachy.

I’m not a fan of them using Rap or Rock music in gears. But as far as the skins go, who cares? It’s multiplayer, it doesn’t have to be canonical. Gears and Halo are both MS owned IP so it kind of makes sense that they would do a small crossover like this. It’s not like Emile and Kat are in the campaign. I personally think the terminator skin is a little dumb but that’s just my opinion.

As far as RTJ goes, it makes sense that they made them into characters in gears considering they used their music to promote gears 4. Personally I think they overcharged for the Run the Jewels pack. Gears 3 also had wacky skins for weapons like rainbow, hot pink or floral patterns. At the end of the day they’re just weapon skins and you have the choice to use them or not. If you want your “gritty” gears experience then use default skins or some of the more regular ones like gold or crimson omen.

Out of curiosity, do we know what Carlos even looks like? I’ve read Aspho fields and The slab but I’ve never read the comics. Do they show what Carlos looks like in any of the Gears comics?

Yeah. Simplified, but we get a good look at him. We also get descriptions of him in Aspho Fields.
