Gears 5 Tech Test - Official Feedback Thread

Gears 5 feels so slow compared to gears 4 even in koth. The movements and rodeo to wall then rodeo out of a wall is very slow compared to gears 4. It feels like your playing in mud or there is like a 1 second delay. The Gnasher is great I love it and the rest of weapons feel good to me. Graphics are great but I could use more blood all over environments when blown up by Gnasher. The omen is fine just maybe reduce the red coming in from the sides a little. I think this could be a great gears game but they need to make movement a little faster along with rodeo running cause everything just seems slower in this game in all modes. Let’s see if they fix.

It fires 6 rounds instead of 3 and you can just hold the trigger down now

Kill cam just highlights flaws in your game, should probably remove it.

Omen is horrible, can’t really tell how damaged I am.

Rifle strength + Escalation + KB/M will just make sure everyone turns off cross play after awhile.

Smoke grenades pop too quickly.

I don’t really like looking away from an enemies flashbang and still getting blinded.

There’s a random weird delay on firing the gnasher which seems to be correlated with how you move. It’s not great.

Playing a few KOTH matches, it’s much better than I thought It’d be from the game play I’d seen, but your kill cam highlights that the shenanigans are still here.

Also, please please make your splash screens skippable.

I Live in Western Australia how do I post to the coalition that the game freezes when coming out of matchmaking and that Australia as a whole cant get matches. Is the game region locked ? and why don’t they support Aussies Down Under

Ahh there it is anybody in this forum live next door to the Coalition go and bang on their door for me would ya

But it’s still burst, not a single shot as G3 for example.

Well to be fair it was burst in 1 and has burst in the name. But the biggest problem I have with it is because of the new recoil system it’s better than the lancer in EVERY way because it’s hard to steady the lancer after so many bullets but with the hammerburst you can literally just hold the trigger down and you can keep it far steadier than the lancer and possibly even empty the clip

Gears Judgment 2.0

^And, no, I’m not talking about Arcade. Where do I start?

Imagine taking everything that worked in Gears of War 4 and completely breaking it…just because. Fluid character movement, simple gunplay that rewarded good aim and a unique and effective damage indicator are all things that are ruined now.

*The recoil system is awful. It feels like change for the sake of change. The guns worked fine before. Now they all kick up way too much. Every gun feels like the Retro Lancer from the Gears 3 beta. Simple, subtle recoil was fine in Gears 4. You already have a game that people consider Shotguns of War. Making the Lancer more cumbersome to use will only make the Gnasher more prevalent over the life of Gears 5. :man_facepalming:t5:

*Target sensitivity is currently broken. My setting are set at 30-30-30, yet when I zoom in my gun reticle can’t pan fast enough to keep up with targets. The menu says “30” but it feels like 15. I’m not sure if that falls under bug or design oversight. I think it might be an issue in Ranked. Maybe some unknown issue with deadzones. Boot camp seems like it registers like it should. I fired up Gears 4 to double check and the target sensitivity is definitely half the speed it should be at “30” in the tech test.

*Please keep the scoreboard tied to holding the back button with the B button bringing up the map layout (like it currently is in Gears 4). The new change of double tapping is confusing and unnecessary.

*Hammerburst needs to be brought back to 3 bullets per shot, instead of the current 6. With 6 bullets, people are now using the gun as a more versatile Enforcer. Close range fights happen more now, because the gun is more deadly up close.

*Enforcer feels a little too strong. The damage was fine in Gears 4. Now you can down people and kill them with leftover bullets in the clip (without an active reload).

*Active reload bar is awful. Reloads now take half a second longer to finish. It’s awkward to reload and feels like an unnecessary departure from previous games.

*Change executions back to the Y button and Lancer chainsaw back to the B button (with the option to map it to RB). The Lancer is now a pain to use because reloads don’t always register when pressing RB (because it’s now bonded to also chainsaw). Chainsaws also take longer to register now, basically giving someone time to kill you while you wait for RB to register.

*Give us the option to melee with weapons like the previous game. The standard knife melee is terrible and the range is almost useless in most fights. The meta of Gears 4 was knowing how to push a fight against a person depending upon which weapon they were using. A person using a Retro Lancer or Longhost has more melee range than a person using something smaller like an Enforcer or a Snub pistol. Now everyone has a melee knife. :man_facepalming:t5::roll_eyes:

*Keep the Gnasher clip at 8 bullets. I’m not upset about the change to 6, but you can’t have it both ways. Either ditch the terrible reload while keeping it at 6 shots or change the clip size back to 8, if we’re now required to learn a slower reload.

*DBNO movement feels sluggish. Almost every time I’m downed by someone, I feel like I’m either crawling in slow motion or stuck against some invisible wall and can’t move at all.

*And finally the eye-blinding elephant in the room: the Inverse Omen. All this talk about “wait to play” has been a waste of time. The new Omen was terrible to look at on YouTube, it was terrible to look at on the dev streams and now it’s STILL terrible on my 4k HDR TV firsthand. WORSE with HDR, quite honestly.

The entire point of the Crimson Omen in the past games (Gears 1-3, Judgment, Ultimate Edition and Gears 4) has always been to indicate damage while not distracting or hindering a player’s vision during a gunfight. It worked for 13 years now, but all of a sudden you’re all surprised by the backlash this new change is getting.

This a textbook example of “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” I’ll paste my suggestion from the other thread below:

For weeks I’ve been hearing these excuses about “oh, it’s a new system. There’s a new rifle meta. We can’t just change the Omen.” YEAH, you can. Literally just put the old Omen on top of the freeze, stun, shock and stim animations you already have. Keep the sides and take out the COG symbol formed in the middle of the screen. Replace it with the Gears 4 Omen within the new sides. Take out ALL of the red and leave the damage indicator in the middle of the screen. Problem solved!

You guys REALLY should have put out a beta this past spring and fixed any highlighted issues over the summer. With launch being so close, I doubt any of the things I mentioned above will be addressed. And if you’re dead-set on this “new direction,” then good luck to you.

Those who don’t learn from history are doomed to repeat it. 2013 and Gears of War Judgment was the history lesson…and yet here we are. Change for change’s sake. Instead of keeping the elements that already worked in Gears 4 and fixing the lag issues, uneven matchmaking and the broken 1v1 rank system in a 5v5 game, you guys spent two years on an unnecessary “rifle meta.” What is it with game companies trying to compare themselves to other games?

Changing recoil patterns to “close a gap” between Core and Competitive doesn’t make the game better—it will only push new players farther away from the franchise altogether, and make current players like myself question whether or not I should find another game to give my time to in two months.

For reference, I bought Bulletstorm to play the Gears 3 beta early and I also played the Overrun beta for Judgment and the UE and Gears 4 betas. Out of all of them, now including Gears 5 Tech Test, this is the only time I have been underwhelmed by what I’ve played. I think it’s a red flag (in my mind, at least) that I’m scrolling through the forums to give my eyes a break from the new Omen instead of no-lifeing the newest playable version of Gears like I’ve done with all previous games.

Yeah, it was. I hate G1 Hammerburst:)

active reloads take wayyyy too long… make it as fast as gears 4 please…\

Melee bouncing is when you rapidly press The melee button and also press the mount(take cover) button to rapidly bounce get off and get on cover while being able to move around. its literally like “Going berserker” and trying extra hard to throw off your enemy. im glad that the hyper bounce has made its way back but where is the melee bounce…

also core shotgun is definitely always is gonna be my prefferred pick. mainly because the competitive gnasher feels like a sawedoff-shotgun because of how insanely close you have to get to your opponent to actually splatter them…

Well, here are some opinions:

  1. Headshots are TOO easy to achieve
  2. Markza is NOT working properly
  3. When roadie running it is annoying how easy you get cover and this interrupts the running path (don’t know how to explain myself, I hope I make myself clear)
I don’t know if it is because the beta test, but the characters are STICK to a weapon layout. I would better like character selectiond and weapon selection separated.
Inspite my comments, I ENJOYED PLAING the tech test

Hey Gears 5 has been pretty good so far. I was wondering if you guys planned to bring back the Alt-Tournament control scheme. My friend was a huge fan of it and is hoping that this control scheme would come back in gears 5. I look forward to continue playing the tech test. Keep up the good work.

So I finally managed to play some proper VS on the Gears beta today and something I really dislike is all the information you get presented on your screen. Like the white dots you see when hitting someone with the pallets of the Gnasher, even when hipfiring, or the countdown of all the power weapons when hitting the LB button.

One of the many reasons why I always preferred Gears over any other (3rd person) shooter was the fact it was a such a bare bones experience. You needed to think for yourself and keep track of the power weapons when and where (pre-Gears 4) they spawned. This is something I find to be much more engaging. I absolutely hate the modern day trend in gaming that everything is shown on the screen. Everything is told. And with every entry TC steps it up. First you had to remember where the ring could spawn so the last 10 secs the team could go different directions or just take a bet and go to where the ring could spawn. First you had to remember where the power weapon’s locations are. First you had to keep ctrack when they would spawn. First you had to check the blood when shooting your enemies (one of the reasons something like PUBG is so unique is the absence of hit markers and the fact you had to check the map where to go and etc.) but now it’ll just show you. If the netcode is fine and there is less bs, sponging and better servers, people don’t need this.

My point is that it’s starting to feel like any other generic 3rd person shooter with these kind of additions to the game. Of course there are some other major differences that still set it apart from other games in the industry but it’s starting to drift away from its core experience with every new entry.

Maybe I’m just too oldskool and maybe this is what people actually want but at least keep this from Ranked so people can still get the purest Gears experience reminiscent to the previous games we fell in love with. It wasn’t just the wallbouncing or the Gnasher but also those little things that kept you engaged and gave the Gears feeling its finishing touch.

I think aim-assist should only be in social quickplay and NOT ranked matches. Bringing in new players is fine, but please don’t mess with your core audience.

Show your squad on the screen.
Give us an option in for the controls for “classic Gears of War”. Let us have the buttons from 1 -4.
Also give us an option to play Escalation by the old rules. Leave the new version for those who like it.

I’m really surprised people are talking positive about G4 melee.
I always thought it’s useless and it’s role was toned down. I mean in UE it was sooo usefull, when people are bouncing while fighting, missing shots ones, then twice, then somebody using melee and it’s near 100% dead for another person. In G4 melee feels as it’s near 100% that you will miss to hit someone with it, so for me it’s completely forgotten there.
In Tech Test melee feels too OP, but at the same time i feel it’s existence ones again.

Breaker Mace needs to go. A melee weapon that OP has no place in this game. Not only does it one shot you, but it also does area damage. Combine it with his useless the standard weapons are and that there’s no flinch and the sheer size of the area effect and you get what just happened in my one game there: one person completely dominates with it.

One game for me to be done with this. That’s how long it took. I’m not even going to bother seeing what it’s like on PC, that’s how disappointing this is.

Hi, just a quick note that I think would greatly improve matchmaking is if you made it so games that a team has reached ether half or two thirds of the score limit so that people don’t join a match 30 seconds from the end.

Please…kill. the kill cam!!!

By the way i really like Arcade when people are trying not to rush, but playing smart and calm, to hold their positions and cover each other. There are even some management kinda thing with skulls. The main problem for me was no real objective or pickups and ttk, but without a rush it feels ok, like you have an objective to hold position, but it’s not official. Ttk is still a problem, yeah.
