BRO yes you get it. I’m tired of what they’re doing to Gears to cater to Esports players whilst the real fans are being left behind.
I agree with movement to a point. But i have experienced matches where the movement is actually better than Gears 4. So im not sure why its so inconsistent. But I dont see how this game is any easier for noobs and caters to Esports gamers. There is literally only one mode Esports gamers play.
Every match I played the movement is a downgrade to Gears 4. Not that Gears 5 feels clunky or anything but its definitely not as controlled as Gears 4. As for the catering to Esports look at what they did to Gears. Adding kill cams they added hit markers you can see planted grenades through walls using tac com you can see a weapon respawn timer. All these things are things a true Gears player didn’t ask for. It seems they went down the route of Gears Judgment to make this game as accessible as possible. I dont want an easier game babying me through everything. I want Gears of War. Is that too much to ask for?
As far as kill cam i turned that garbage off lol. I dont want to watch myself die twice. I didnt know you can see tagged nades with tac com. I wonder if that is intentional. That doesnt make sense, but thanks for the tip! I dont mind the timers because im old and cant keep track of that stuff in my head. And at least people wont literally sit camping a weapon the entire match. I still dont think this helps noobs any more than it helps veterans. There is still too much of a skill gap between a Gears vet and a noob.
I’m reiterating what others have said so hopefully this will be implemented. In general I thought the tech test was good, however, I did have some concerns:
-
Why introduce the reverse omen? This has never been an issue in previous iterations of Gears so why change it now? If it ain’t broke…
-
I don’t like the hold for minimap, again, I don’t see why this was changed from select + B in Gears 4.
-
The lancer is FAR too strong.
-
Aim assist seems to be very prominent and I would like to be able to disable this.
-
Please don’t include the weapon respawn timer. It is part of the skill of the game to know when the weapons are likely to respawn.
-
Why do we need kill cam or emotes, it feels very casual and not like Gears.
-
Not a fan of chainsaw being at RB. Why not continue to have it as hold B. You can still retain melee as tap B.
-
Bring back Y for meatshield, or at least allow customisation.
-
We had a bot on our team for a round and a half on KoTH and in that time it only managed 244 points. It was awful and I wouldn’t want to see bots in ranked play, imagine TDM where your bot is shipping all of the teams lives.
Positives:
- The changes that were made to how you melee are good, being able to melee while holding the lancer was a positive change. Using the melee button for knifing after mantle kicking was a good change, and that is how most people wanted it to be in GOW 4.
- Being able to get headshots with the rifles was a good improvement
- Hit markers are also a good upgrade to the game. It has always been difficult to gauge damage you had done to an opponent so that you could call it out to your teammates, and now people will be able to with some accuracy call it out.
Negatives:
- I do not like that the weapons show when they will spawn. It was a big strategy part of the game before when you had to pay attention, so that you would know when they would be spawning back. I feel like that should be taken out of the competitive and most of the ranked playlists. It is a good idea for the casual playlists, but it is just taking a huge strategy aspect out of the game.
- Then Gnasher has way too long of a 1 hit kill range on it, it feels too easy to kill people with. The width of the shot makes it much too easy to hit people at close ranges. The Gnasher has been a fairly consistent gun across Gears 1, 2, 3, 4, and Judgement. There should not be this much of a change to the weapon that is used for 80% of the online play. This also makes it much harder to counter attack someone once they have shot you once. In the other games if you were better than another player, it didn’t matter if they hit you first you could bounce around and beat them, in this game that seems impossible in many cases. If they get the first shot on you, you will typically end up dying because of the range of the gun and the width of the spray.
- It is very hard to tell when you get a kill, down, or assist; especially a down. I would like to see it be changed to a variant of the old system, where the points, downs and kills pop up on the center of the screen like all the other GOWs. Trying to look at the kill feed to see if you got a down is too distracting.
- Looking at the leaderboard when playing seems too difficult. I prefer in the other GOWs where you held in the select button to view it and whenever you let go it went away. I had a much harder time trying to look at it during the social matches.
- The recoil on the rifles is really annoying to deal with. It seems like the amount of damage needed to be done to down someone has gone down and the way it was adjusted to make it harder to kill people was to add a crazy amount of recoil on the guns. I feel like most people would prefer to have to deal more damage, but just having more stable rifles. And I don’t know if the recoil is just something to make it harder on the people playing with a mouse and keyboard so that they don’t have so much of an advantage anymore. If it is, it should be something only PC people have to deal with, not people playing on XBOX.
- The damage omen being reversed makes it very difficult to see your surroundings while damaged, and is disorienting because it mostly takes away you ability to slide into, or take cover because you cannot see it very well and it has just lead me to getting stuck on sides of cover where I didn’t want to go, or ever jumping into a teammate you did not know was standing in your way of escape.
- I was not hearing people coming from behind me. In the other games you can usually her people within the last few steps of them getting to you, in this I wasn’t hearing them at all, and I don’t know if that is just a volume problem that can be easily adjusted to be slightly louder
You make some good points but all I want is Gears which is what Gears 4 gave me they gave me Gears. Although Gears 4 had its problems. Now heres Gears 5 coming down the pipeline and I dont need all these little tid bit features that do nothing but make the game easier for others. Gears is supposed to be hard. Sure theres still a vast gap between a vet and a noob but the gap is being diminished as Gears games continue to release. Regardless nothing I can do cause my opinion won’t matter unless I’m on an Esports team. Nice having a civilized conversation for once instead of an argument lol
The biggest problem in turns of gaps I see could be what separates an Onyx 3 player from a Diamond to Masters player. I still think the gaps below that exist. But if movement is gone that was a huge separation at the higher ranks.
Here are my thoughts.
-
The chainsaw has a delay when trying to rev it, due to it being mapped to RB. If you can’t fix the delay, then remove the revving animation, similar to Gears 1, since the delay makes up for a faster rev speed. Keep the stun when getting shot as you rev the chainsaw. The delay is good when you reload. Right now, if you attempt to chainsaw while reloading, you’ll jam. Holding it should activate the delay so you can chainsaw.
-
The aim assist is too aggressive. Give us an option to turn it off.
-
It takes too long to kill a downed enemy with automatic weapons.
-
Since the Gnasher uses a new reloading system, I think the timing to reload should be more like the originals, since there’s already a penalty for not getting a perfect active.
-
The AoE of the Incendiary Grenades deals way too much damage. Stepping in it is basically automatic death.
-
The full game should let us customize weapon skins on a team basis, like Gears 4 did. Also, add an option to add a skin to all, or to add all to a team only. This also applies to banners.
-
Tone down the tunnel vision when dying. You don’t gotta change the omen, just tone down all that red. I think the bluish filter already indicates a near death state.
-
The Lancer GL respawns on pickup. Timer starts as soon as it’s grabbed. Pretty sure that’s unintentional.
-
There’s no indication when downing somebody.
-
The Lancer cannot be reloaded when the Tac/Com is active.
-
Planted grenades seem to take longer to destroy via gunfire.
-
Bring back curb stomping. Mapping executions back to Y should work. I don’t care if knife executions are also mapped to the Y button.
One of the worst online shooters. Inconsistent game play. One second you are taking out with a shot to the body, the next you unload two mags into an opponent as they rush at you to be killed with a knife or chainsaw.
It isn’t fun to play.
Still deranking with MVPs and yes we lost but a loss should not be basing ranks if I’m putting in the work and my team is a bunch of mixed levels. Not fair.
TBH they shouldnt even have a ranking system running except in the background during this tech test. Especially since its still sketchy at best. If it was working as intended sure, but i dont think it is.
I just hope it does change come the full release.
- In Classic Alt control, when i tap A and X at the same time, my character will auto-run, causing me to sprint out of cover or straight into enemies.
- Left joystick click brings up the little weapon purchase menu, but ive accidently brought this up when trying to mark enemies. Kind of a user error, but I’d be nice to have an alternative way to bring that menu up.
- In arcade mode, after killing enemies and getting my guns reloaded and all healed up i’ll realize i need more ammo. By the time I walk over my fallen enemies, their weapons and ammo vanishes before i can even bend over and pick it up. Pretty annoying, weapons should stay on the ground longer so I have the chance to refill.
- Having to go into every character to change the weapon skin or banner is tedious. I’d be nice to have a default all cog/swarm option.
The knife and the chainsaw are overpower, too much range
I love the direction Gears 5 is going! I love that the devs have tweaked the movement and weapons so every match doesn’t devolve into wallbouncing Gnasher fests. The cooldown on the rolling has fixed the roll, so now it’s only useful for a quick dodge. But you don’t see two players in the cycle of “Roll, Gnasher blast, roll, Gnasher blast, roll, Gnasher blast etc…”, with new players constantly rolling into the fray, cycle and repeat. It was so annoying to have to play like that to be competitive, it feels like a different game now. (A better game IMO.)
I love that the Lancer and Hammerburst can down and kill players so quickly, especially with headshots, so enemies don’t get back up. One player with a Lancer can actually cover a corner for the whole team now, without someone being able to wallbounce through it like they’re getting hit with a nerf gun. With the newly powerful automatic, it’s much more rewarding to flank and use teamwork to pick smart angles, because it seems that as soon as you can catch an enemy who’s not in cover, it’s an easy kill. This tech test eliminates the weird twitch-based rolly-blasty combat, and plays much better as a tactical team shooter.
The only thing that still feels broken to me is the right side camera advantage. The camera seeing over the right shoulder makes it very easy to win a close range fight when you’re using left cover, almost impossible when you’re using right cover. A button to switch the camera over the other shoulder would solve this. This camera side advantage should not be understated- it makes a map that’s geometrically symmetrical in no way a symmetric fight, because the visibility is absolutely not symmetrical. I do a lot of weird tricks to compensate, like aiming left around right side cover so I can see over the left shoulder, then pulling back, then walking around the corner with the aim still held over the left shoulder, because walking around left cover normally is absolute suicide in a Gears game. But it’s annoying to do, especially when so many other games out there have this button. The right sided camera system also creates a weird clockwise momentum around the map, that I don’t think is a good thing.
All other changes and tweaks I generally love, keep up the great work!
Just ended up in a game were my team are all running 30 ping in the UK. Came across a team running 120 plus . There top player had over 60 kils. There lowest player had 45 kills. Due to the lag our team had 18 kills top player. They sponged so many shots and their advantage was ridiculous. WE NEED REGION SELECTION. Or gears is dead in my eyes…such a shame.
The sound needs work, it’s too hard to tell where the torque is being fired from
Everything on gears of war 5 is Solid… except. The movement.
-
This is by far the worst movement on gears. It’s very slow, charters feel clunk and heavy.
-
Aiming feels off. I can’t put my finger on it but it feels ugly, awkward, and unnatural in way?
Solution: Bring back gow4 movement, don’t change things just for the sake of feeling “new.”
The UX for the Escalation voting system is a little bad. The checkmarks for votes show up under the tooltip which says “Enter”. Would be nice if we could see the votes easier.
