Gears 5 Tech Test - Official Feedback Thread

So about the climbing. It works wrong. The distance for jumping over the cover from roadie run is ok, feels the same as G4, but the distanse for climbing from roadie run is shorter, so i’m always kissing the wall.

I’m loving it for the most part. The few things I would change
1- Fall off from the Gnasher should be lowered just a little

2 - Dont know if the Hammerburst is gonna play the same way in ranked as it does in Arcade but if it does then it need to go back to Gears 4 style. It just doesn’t feel right

3 - The timers on weapon spawns need to be removed from tac-com. It takes away from map awareness and makes players camp the spot for too long waiting for the weapon

4- Grenades - love that they were nerfed but still have the same problem as Gears 4 with the sound not going off sometimes.

5- The enforcer NEEDS to be nerfed. Even if its a pick up weapon it shouldn’t down you from a long distance

6- The GL Lancer AKA THE FREEDOM LANCER needs a little splash damage

7 - PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE include some kind of tutorial of the game modes. I played a TON of KOTH and it still amazes me how many people wither dont play for the objective or just dont know

8 - Bring the old headshot sound back. Theres just something not right with the new one and its not as satisfying

9 - Crawling while DBNO is not right. If your near any type of cover you get stuck but you can see your character trying to move but keeps going back to where you went down

Love the new Omen. It feels right and more representative of how hurt you actually are

I actually thought you could jump the wall way early compared to 4. But I didnt save any clips of this.

Thought they weren’t making too many changes. Understand they try just enough changes to make it feel like a new game. However, some reason game feels like judgment with very slow gameplay. It’s become a long distant right/left trigger boring shooter. It got old really fast getting shot from 2-3 different directions from people camping constantly with overpowered long distant guns. I would use any other guns and was surprised of how easy each one was to use.

Also really surprised how effortless it was to use snipe/embark. Would go out of my way to pick it up and then immediately drop it so it was temporarily disposed from the game.

I liked gears because it was one game that felt challenging and competitive. However, feels like dreadful COD where a fetus is able to play. Granite it’s a beta, but can’t see how they can change this game enough to make it feel like gears again. The shotgun for some reason feels inconsistent. Kill cams almost makes the game worse as kill camera confirms they were a mile off (not even looking at you). Long distance guns feel rediciculously overpowering and easy to use. Long distance guns are meant for suppressing fire not stronger than a shotgun from a mile away. Should promote people to move around instead of posting up to camp out with smores all day. Also, why was sniping easier to use without a scope. They really need a higher bloom for sights.

I fear, people will play for a couple weeks, as it’s something new, but then Populations will slowly dwindle down,eEspecially since so many other games released around that same time.

The die hard veteran gear fans are the majority of players who keeps gears alive months to years post launch. Once you loose trust of the veterans your game won’t survive.

It was really sad, as getting bored and tired of Lancer wars 5 beta by Saturday. Gears 4 beta got nearly max rank but it’s beta only required minor changes. It will be hard to justify playing this come Sept.

Overall, it’s hard to narrow down good points for the team to fix, as game needs reworked in multiple areas (ie weapon balancing, gameplay, and movement). It feels they are trying to hard bringing in new players. However, at this rate it will be yet another judgment on their hands.

I’m failing to see the problem there.

You know what I mean :rofl:

Okay, so now that the first phase is over, it’s a good time for feedback.

Positives:

Graphic wise it looks great, I had my first day on an S and once I got my X, there was a very noticeable difference in quality.
Arcade mode is actually quite a lot of fun, take it for what it is as a casual mode. I’d only worry a little about potential about new players getting smashed too hard.
I like the controller changes, don’t get me wrong, I’d have been happy as they were, but the changes are fine.
Footsteps, okay this was/is a problem in 4, but for 5, there is a significant improvement. You can really hear people a lot easier now.
The two maps feel good and flow well.
Music is a lot better than 4. Was hoping for some Jablonsky-esque moments, but full game still to come, prefer bombastic stuff.
Movement feels more consistent to me, could just be down to playstyle, but I feel I can control bouncing and turning easier.
I like the new weapons, brings more variety.

Negatives:

Nvidia 10 series issues on PC.
The inverted omen - it’s too much, takes up too much of the screen, the effect is too much - it has its own thread.
The kill cam - I believe it has its own thread - but it’s not right at the moment - it will more often than not, show something completely contrary to what happened on your own screen.
Hit registration/shot trading - it feels improved over 4, there’s less wtf moments, but it’s still inconsistent. Some point blanks were just not registering even with all pellets on the opposing character. Still feels as though it needs work.
I had a couple of moments where mantle countering didn’t register, I appreciate it may be the servers under stress as with some other issues.
Enforcer feels a little OP, seems to down people way too quickly even faster than 4.
Getting stuck on cover, trying to get off walls or barriers doesn’t always seems to work first time. It seems to be worse when you are getting hit by enemy fire.

Overall I enjoyed it and would look forward to playing it later in the year (omen would need adjusted/changed). Hopefully with a larger pool of players we won’t have the problem 4 had as much whereby fully stacked teams were able to play against a complete team of randoms.

Oh, and I don’t know if it’s been mentioned but the crawling is awful in Gears 5. It’s by far the worst it’s even been, and I’m talking including Gears 2 against Hong Kong players.

You can barely crawl in the direction you choose and by the time the character does damn move it’s normally too late. How hard is it when it was perfect fine in the predecessor? Get a grip already and stop changing EVERYTHING. It’s like you’re trying to annoy us old Gears.

“Get back in there, and fight for your Queen!”

If nothing changes, I can see myself (for the first time since 2006) playing this purely for the campaign and going back to Gears 4 for Versus. Hm…maybe that was your plan all along, huh? Gears 4 got such negative feedback that you’ve gone and made something worse to make it look better. Smart.

Haha, I do. But the problem is they’re taking things that aren’t broke, breaking them violently and trying to put them back together with cheap selotape that has “New” printed on it.

No, definitely not. It looks like the distance to climb is 1 meter now. Sometimes i even do a melee trying to climb.

I want to start off by saying I had more fun playing this version of Gears over the past few days, than I have with Gears 4 the 2-3 years it’s been out. I cannot wait for the full release. That being said, there are a few things that I believe can be tweaked.

  1. Inverse Omen - This has been a huge discussion, and I for one had my thoughts on it, but wanted to get my hands on the tech test before committing to an opinion. After 2 full days of non stop playing, I don’t mind it, I see what you’re going for, but it needs to be toned down just a bit. Especially on darker maps like District, I felt myself getting disoriented during combat if I got hit once. I understand that the point was so you can focus on whatever is straight in front of you, but after playing, I realized how important my peripheral vision is, too, and with this damage omen, I can’t see squat. If you could possibly make the outer redness more clear (transparent), I think that would be fine.

  2. Miss Roll - Miss rolling in Gears 4 could be recovered if you were close to a piece of cover by being able to slam into that cover before your roll animation was finished. I completely agree with this change, however, I believe the cooldown between your roll animation and when you can start moving again is a little high. I feel like if you miss roll during combat, it should punishable, but also recoverable if the opponent can’t follow up with your mistake. I can’t tell you how many times I, or the the individual I was facing, rolled and ended up standing there for 1.5 seconds before being able to move. You roll, come up from the roll and stand there waiting for the game to give you the go ahead to continue. Reduce that timer just a little bit, and it will feel good.

  3. Heath of DBNO enemies needs to be tweaked - I’m not sure if it’s the decrease in range on the Gnasher, or what, but once I downed an enemy, it felt like it took 2-3 extra shots to kill them on the ground if I was not right above them to finish them off. Even with rifles, it just felt like it took more bullets than needed to finish someone who was DBNO off.

  4. “Change Weapon Loadout” timer - Easy, just increase the timer in between deaths. I felt like the game only gave me 1-2 seconds to make any changes to my loadout as I’m waiting to spawn.

  5. View “Tour of Duty” mid game - Once the full game releases, we’ll be given access to the full Tour of Duty, and it would be nice to pull up and look at the progress of any challenges while in game.

  6. Apply to all - Once I unlocked the Tester Banner, I went into character customization to apply it. It was then when I noticed I had to open all characters and apply that banner (and expressions) separately. If there was an option to “apply to all” characters, that would extremely convenient.

Well, that’s all I can think of so far from my time playing the Tech Test. I’m sure I’ll think of more throughout the week/next tech test. When I do, I’ll edit this post.

I didn’t care for this Tech Test too much. I don’t like how Coalition changed everything around that I got use to in Gears 4. I don’t like having the assault rifle on the left and Gnasher on the right. I have to change it every time and that’s a big bummer to me. I also Don’t like using RB to chainsaw someone. I prefer to do it like in Gears 4. I was also hoping they would’ve fixed matchmaking by using local servers instead of the pvp style they used in 4. I don’t want to me matched up with people in other countries who have terrible connections. Getting in a game with people who have over 300+ ping is beyond horrible. It ruins the game and can cause people to be disconnected from the game. This Gears may very well be my last Gears I ever buy if Coalition keeps doing stupid stuff like this.

I mentioned this and I dont think they changed it because when you go down in the open you can crawl fine its when you go down near cover it seems you get stuck to the cover

Well so far I’ve been getting stuck every time. Every. Single. Time. All I wanted was to quickly get the Tester skins, and be done with it. Soon as I got them I hit the Xbox power button. Quickest way to be relieved of that Tech Test.

Fortunately next weekend I’ll be too busy, buying paint to paint a wall that doesn’t need painted, so I can watch it dry.

I felt the same way 99% of the time I went down. The 1 time I went down in the open I was crawling like there was no tomorrow and my guy was gone for a few seconds tilI got shot

I can relate.

Just remember, on his screen you were probably in a full on sprint towards him then your character starting doing star jumps until he shot you.

Yea but also thats when I realized it has to do with going down in or next to cover

In regards to Lancer, even with a target that isn’t moving at all and my gun placed on his head at an unsafe engagement distance, it takes almost 2 seconds.

Now, do that on a target that is at medium range (outside of gnasher range) and you will be doing considerably fewer headshots due to the weapon spread & recoil, not to mention the movement of the target. As such, you are talking about a gun that cannot effectively stand on its own merit even if used correctly.

The current state of the Lancer requires using it in a support capacity where you are not the primary target or with team fire to get it done, which I’ve said if that is the intention of the weapon then there is no problem, but then let me switch off of lancer faster so that I can open with lancer to punish and then switch to finish. The current model has a very slow gun switch which greatly limits when you can safely employ Lancer where you wouldn’t have been better off just leaving the gnasher on the entire time.

A matter of personal preference, but I would prefer that the gnasher should be the gun to switch to when you are able to get in close, not when you are 30 yards out so you don’t even bother taking the lancer out. Long gun switch times also means players are afraid to leave the lancer out because you risk getting caught with your pants down if you don’t leave the gnasher on.

free for all could be in this 5 gears, it is a good way for anyone who does not want to depend on team, play solo. This mode should be rank
