Gears 5 Tech Test - Official Feedback Thread

PLEASE:

-Remove the new Omen, it’s terrible, disrupts the gameplay

Haha very true. I don’t have high hopes but it wouldn’t be hard. Carolyn Seymour is definitely present for Gears 5 so having her record some new announcer lines wouldn’t be difficult! I’m sure many people would pay money for it if they must have it as DLC. I certainly would.

I certainly wouldn’t

Seems people are unaware that it can be turned off. A lot of people don’t go through the options.

Alright, I’ve played the Tech Test for a few hours (when it actually works), and here’s my thoughts :

Positive :

  • Swarm units are more unique and look really nice. Well done TC, I’m gonna play as Swarm a bit more this time around.
  • Love the new maps. It’s only 2 but I like them more than other maps on Gears 4 (like fudging Glory or Speyer)
  • Arcade would actually be fun if the weapon tuning wasn’t that rough (and also get rid off the headshots with any weapon)
  • Love the new menus and interface. Everything is here, there are many options to choose and its all intuitive.
  • Some people say the music dont feel like Gears, they’re wrong. The music reminds me of Gears 1 era and is perfectly rendered to me.
  • New reticules and weaponry. First, I thought it was a bad thing but I quicly got used to it and its actually pretty cool
  • So excited about the campaign. I just hope I wont have to fight robots for hours again… and I’m scared to be disapointed again but still excited and hyped about it. I really wanna know what happens next. I didnt play Gears 4 campaign (got sick of fighting robots for ages before even seeing any swarm…) so I watched it on Youtube instead. Won’t do that this time.
  • As a PVP and PVE player, I welcome the addition of the Escape mode. Its smart to have created a mode that seems to be the opposite of what Horde actually is (camping a base).
  • Map Creator !!! Finally, we’re getting content that is really appreciated by players from the current generation. This is a nice addition and I’m grateful TC is trying this. Nice
  • The woodstick (Breaker Mace) !! Lol Me and my friend laughed so hard when we saw this weapon in the trailer. So we started a meme about it like “may the woodstick be with you” and stuff. It remind me of the clever in Gears 3 so its a nice reminescence of that. I thought it would be OP but I actually killed most of the players trying to rush me with it, just by walking backwards while blindfiring my rifle. But be careful, other players might not like this (maybe they feel like this is also a Judgment 2.0 feature)
  • No more lootboxe, nor more season passes or map packs that divide the players. Nice choice and I support those decisions 100%.
  • Some people might not agree, but I think its cool to have Terminator and Sarah Connor as playable characters. It might attract some new players that might like the Terminator franchise (I’m one of them, especially the serie ‘Sarah Connor Chronicles’). But they’re just dumb, since robots are already in the game, you might as well add the most feared robot ever in the mix lol

Negative :

  • Tech Test wasnt working properly for me. Especially the first day when playing with my friend xOderus. I was in a queue forever but my friend was able to play. After a few matches, we went back to Gears 4 cause I was sick of waiting. Last night, I thought I’d give the beta another go but I couldnt find any KOTH match and, when I left, the screen was stuck… So I turned off my console and NOT wasting my time with this anymore. I played Tomb Raider instead. What a shame, knowing that me and my friend planned this since the E3 and we actually bought beers and stuff. We were so excited, we ended up being mad and disapointed most of the time.
  • Weapon Tuning is HORRIBLE. Some people say its exactly the same than it is in Gears 4. Fools. I’ve been playing Gears 4 multiplayer A LOT and it’s NOT TRUE. Maybe its the fact that headshots do more damage now and can kill you right away with any weapon basically. I HATE this. I’ve played so many shooters during the last 8 years, you cant get headshots with simple rifles or istol in all those games, but you can now in Gears. MAKES NO SENSE. Leading to the next point
  • Time to kill is way TOO FAST. My dodges (roddie runs, strafes or bounces) are not that efficient cause I cant sponge like I was able in the other Gears games. So it feels like all my movement skills are rendered useless and Im supposed to stay behind cover for days ?!? That’s no how I like to play Gears at all. And my friends either. Dying from 3 bullets of Mulcher, 2 bullets of Boltok or 1 Hammerbust shot in the head. LOL What is this ? I get more headshots with Lancer than Markza now… LOL
  • With my friends, I was always the one watching over my teamates and risking my life to revive them. We always joke about that and its why I chose the medic character in Gears 4. It suits my gameplay style so much. Its aolmost IMPOSSIBLE to REVIVE my mates when they go down in Gears 5, because the second we are up and can move, we’re already ultimate/one-shot. So those situations where I revive my teamates 3 times in a row, hoping he could make it, only to see him dying and me getting wrecked by team shots on the opposite teams or stupid headshots with enforcer or whatever… LOL So I told my friend NOT to revive me anymore, too risky. So you might as well get rid of DBNO like Judgment did; at least I wont be frustrated for trying to help my mates…
  • Movements feel a bit off… like there’s a delay : my inputs register late, or sometimes dont register at all (mashing the RB button to reload is dumb)
  • The red Omen preventing me from seeing around me properly. I think its way too much, at least GIVE US THE OPTION to turn it off. I know they tuned it down after showing the Escape gameplay, but it’s still very annoying.
  • TC is forcing crossplay with pc cheaters ONCE AGAIN. Gears was always a console game, so it has nothing to do on pc. And also, me and my friend suffered from cheaters so much in Gears 4 (and you didnt ban them obsviously, I still see the same names in Social Quickplay so it seems like you actually support the aim bot users). Im against that. Its frustrating to know that we’re gonna have keyboard/mouse users and cheaters in every lobby now… If I was playing Gears alone (without my friend), this would be a HUGE problem for me. But playing as a duo, I always have my friend around to avenge me or teamshoot with me.
  • Emotes… Is this Gears of Fornite ?!? Of course it made me laugh when I saw this in the options but, let’s be honest, it’s a bit out of place in a Gears Game. Don’t try to copy Fortnite or other games like that, Gears has its own unique features, we dont need childish things like that. My advice ? If you wanna keep your fanbase, get rid of the emotes. People are gonna be pissed at that (except newbies of course).

I’ve played Gears 3, Judgment, UE and 4 multiplayer modes. I also played the 1st one but didnt have Xbox Live back then so just the campaign. I didnt like Gears 2 campaign so I skipped that one. I dont write here often, but I thought its important to give my opninion NOW since I was here for a long time (when the Epic forums still existed lol). I’ve been loyal to the franchise, despite all the bullcrap I had to accept but Gears is till my favourite multiplayer EVER so I’ll always try my best to stick with it.

Alright, back to you TC. With a few minor changes (like getting rid off rifle headshots or a balanced weapon tuning), Gears 5 can be awesome. With the wrong moves, it can also turn into Judgment 2.0… I feel like this tech test should’ve been made way earlier in the year. Now you only have less than 2 months to adjust the game. Not much time left.

One thing I dont understand maybe someone can explain. What exactly is this? I got this on a kill and literally couldnt see a thing.

Tc,

Here is a short summary of my tech test experience.

Bootcamp: please make it optional. As long as there is nothing significantly different compared to other gears titles it should be optional.

Arcade: every weapon feels like a powerweapon and in my opinion it is more like judgement…feels a lot like a first person shooter. To me this has nothing to do with GOW.

King of the Hill: i liked it but hated the overall power of weapons. I understand that its not shotgun only but just test out a battle were a team only use lancers…i think its impossible to win a single match if the oposite team knows what they are doing…i was downed by active lancers within a second. Training ground is in my opinion just to open for KOTH. multiple crossfires are possible and since a shotgun blast can do 97% Damage you are pretty much screwed every time you get a little damage.

Esalation: there was to much to take into account when comparing it to gears 4.
Think about gamers that are not always playin with a full squad…when you die the round is over. I would just keep the old set up as used in gears4.

Movement: to sticky , especially when and after interaction with an object. I had way more unnescesary rolls as i’m used to(default controlls).
Gliding into a spot were a teammate is situated resulted in pushing me back to the starting point of my slide or morph me out of cover.

Weapons are generally a little to overpowered. Every shotgun fight is done in 2 shots in 90 procent of the time…I did a lot of 97% shots in 1( does this meen my opponent only had his big toe left?) And if not than why does my second shot down the guy instead of annihalating him?
Lancers should be more support en less strong…I like the recoil on the weapons but active lancers down you within a second.
A lot of people were just hard aiming their shotgun because it was clear this was an easy way of killing. To easy especially because the movement isnt as easy to evade because of cooldown when sliding.

Active reloads: i dont understand why it was changed timing wise…some powerweapons like torque are a pain to reload. And reducing shotgun clips by half is a Nice idea but is killing in most intense siuations. I would turn it around so perfect active reload for example will give you half a clip of more powerfull shots and bad reload just 6 or 7 normal bullets…i think it makes it more rewarding in high risk situations.

New damage screen: take it out and use the old one…i feel blind when hit ones…most of the time i miss out on enemys and damage i received, and it simply takes away your view in a game were i already think that the field of view is very narrow.

Weapon swap analog: why is the gnasher now on the right side of the d-pad? I wasnt able to change and after 6 games somehow it changed to the original set up.

Unfortunately i wasnt able to play as much as i like but overall i really liked it and it gave me a feeling like gears 3 did() that feeling were i know i have to work hard to get my kills…,as long as the hitReg is as pure as possible im a fan.(i did notice an advantage again for higher ping players)
In my opinion you are heading in the right direction keep up the good work

Another thing. Before we start the match and we see our line up. It looks terrible like slapped on and just ugh no.

Look at destiny 2. It makes you look epic…this makes us look like a cheap sci fi movie.

It should be changed.

Would it be difficult to implement a visual notification if you’re going against squads? Gears 3 had it, but doesn’t seem to a thing again.

Pretty much play solo in ranked so it would be nice to know.

It’s hard to give quality feedback without putting in enough play time but so far i think my biggest complaint is the damage is a little high all around. I like a lot of the other changes so far.

You guys are really going backwards with these games, each successive one should build on the strong points of the previous iteration and fine tune the short comings. Unfortunately, progress seems to have regressed since Gears 3, and this is coming from someone who has been with the franchise since the original Gears. Stop trying to cater to new gamers who all want some carbon generic copy of every other shooter game available on the market. Things that made Gears unique are being nerfed and down right butchered because of the learning curve of the game to new players. I understand trying to widen the intended market opportunity, but not at the expense of all the veterans who have been with the series from the onset. Having said this, i’ll now move on to the actual short comings.

IF IT’S NOT BROKEN DON’T FIX IT. Seriously, this should be printed and out and hung up in your meeting rooms. This applies to the omen, to the shotgun, to the movement, to the speed, to the delays. Gears 3 was almost perfect in regard to all of these aspects, yet for some reason you guys felt a need to change them. This game is virtually unplayable to those of us who have adopted the wall-bouncing, quick maneuvering, strafing battle tactics that organically manifested from the uniqueness that Gears was - why you guys are trying to circumvent that and become a generic third person shoot is beyond me. Wall-bouncing is useless in this game, it’s too slow and way to choppy. The shotgun delays are unbearable, the includes the delays coming off a wall, after roady running, turning a corner, it’s ridiculous that player’s can counter all of this by standing still and hard aiming. Even Gears 4,which was a step back from Gears 3, is better than this half-finished product you have presented us with. Granted it’s only the tech test, but seeing as the release date is a little over a month away, I seriously doubt that much will fundamentally change from this to the actual release, which is sad. I’m seriously regretting having pre-ordered this game, I thought it was impossible for you guys to make the same mistake in digressing between titles yet here we are. FIX THIS, or risk losing all of the fans who have been with you from the start of this journey, some have already jumped ship, and reading just a handful of the preceding commentary only validates the sentiment herein.

Active Boltok always popped heads with 2 shots. And headshots with all weapons is only in Arcade

With all due respect i remember what people were saying about Gears 3 at the time and i remember how that game was. Gears 3 was the biggest joke in the entire series. Everything downed you in half a second. The retro and sawed-off were complete noob weapons. Lancer had no recoil. Every game you played was against a full party. The maps sucked, everything was rolling lobbies instead of matchmaking, melee was waaaay to strong, and there was no ranking system,

That’s not to say we can’t have valid feedback for Gears 5, but the people holding Gears 3 in high regard make me question their credibility.

Gears 3 was so long ago. I cant remember, but compared to Gears 4 everything about Gears 5 is superior except the movement speed. Now im not sure how much the servers being unoptimized has an impact on this. I did experience some matches with a tremendous amount of lag. But even minor lag could make you feel slow.

My apologies, my juxtaposition to Gears 3 , and subsequent praise, are strictly for the shotgun functionality and overall movement dynamics. I thought that was evident but i guess not. All of the points you mentioned I also held in bad regard with Gears 3, but despite those shortcomings it’s still the best package that has been brought forward relative to the subsequent and future ones. Honestly those points you mentioned are the things that should had been fixed while maintaining all of the other aspects of the game, but again this concept of not fixing things that aren’t broken seems to be foreign and abstract.

Why can’t holding down B use the chainsaw and tapping B for melee?

Another thing, why has executions changed from the Y button. What does that change even accomplish?

Can we also get an option to hold down the button to bring up the scoreboard (which will disappear when you release it - like previous games) and tap it to see the map… just a personal ease of use option.

Hi team,

First of all I want to congratulate you on this very first tech test, I have been having a hell of a time playing Gears 5 . So much that I dont want to play anymore Gears of War 4, due that Gears 5 feels more arcade and advanced in every step of the way.

However I woult like to point out some things I have noticed on Gears 5 that I think it would be great to change over or consider making modifications.

  1. The damage Omen: I dont think having a big omen while taking damage its a good thing, It doesnt allow the player to see well the action, I would advice to keep the original damage omen as it is , surely this new omen looks cool however it not functional in this way it has to be minimalistic, less is more.

  2. Lancer Active Reloading: I notice that the lancer takes a lot of time to reload in active reloading, it would be great to have it as gears 4 which is faster and more fluid in the way to recharge the lancer.

I think by having these two situations addressed it would increase a lot more the experience of playting the game, I 've had a good time playing it and I do believe the reason I have an Xbox One its due of the Gears Games which In my consideration its one of the best games besides Contra 3 the Aliens Wars and the original Contra.

Thanks and Congratulations on this great game that you have created.

Yes i can agree with that. I think it’s an unfortunate thing that most devs feel that innovation and keeping things fresh is more important than mastery and integrity. I understand that companies don’t want to make the same game for 20 years, and i also understand that sometimes innovations are better for the game despite most communities instinctually being resistant to change.

That being said i do agree that i wish TC had focused more on what made this game what it is today, the slow-paced slug it out gameplay where battles lasted for 5 even 10 shots, not just 1 or 2. Gameplay that was focused on wallbouncing, outplaying your opponent, etc. Gears 5 is too fast, kills too quick, that’s not why people played this game over the plethora of other shallow twitch reactions insta-kill instant gratification shooters out there.

Overall, I enjoyed the Tech Test. I’ve been a huge fan since the first GOW. However, here are me and my friends thoughts after playing this weekend…

  1. The lancer felt super over-powered. The aiming, spray and recoil were perfectly fine, it just felt extremely powerful to the point where I was just mowing people down when it came to any 1v1. Nerfing the damage a bit would easily solve this problem.

2, The whole weapon placement/selection feature felt so unnecessary and made getting into matches take so much longer. It just seemed like a huge bottle neck when it came to starting up a game and it was very clunky/laggy when running. It took me out of the moment. Honestly, it would be better just to automatically place weapons on the map or just rotate weapons automatically.

  1. Every time I would try to adjust my settings within the menus everything would skip and lag every time I was choosing an option . Especially when adjusting my screen to fit my TV.

  2. The character models seemed way to zoomed in/huge (even though this is how gears is, it seemed more than usual). I can’t really explain this one, but the characters seemed to take up so much of my screen. I especially felt this when I noticed a lot of the text over lapping each other. This happened a lot right before the match started (count down literally right before the match started). I felt as if the death notification animations on the screen were too distracting as well.

  3. When you would get shot the omen or bloody screen was just way too much and was done better in other gears titles. I would say just tone it down a bunch

  4. When running, being able to traverse over objects while holding/clicking “B” was done so much better in Gears 4. Please make it like that again. Every time I tried to do it, it didn’t work and it just slowed down the game play for everyone.

With all these nitpicking complaints I still enjoyed the game. It’s just GOW so I want it to be amazing. Once most of these and other complaints get addressed the game will be amazing. Even though I still believe this game should be called Gears of War 5 instead of Gears 5 (especially since the previous games had the same name) I think this game will be great. The shooting, maps , connection and feels were all there. Good job.

This. It’s just unnecessary. and keeps me from playing the game. I think it’s a bad design decision that really just needs to die off.
