Gears 5 Tech Test - Official Feedback Thread

After playing more games i don’t know what to think.
Yesterday in arcade and escalation everything was ok. Today in KoH i dislike my experience at all.
I was a “core” player in Gears4 and i’m sure if i’ll back there it won’t be so much pain to play KoH or any other mode.
At first G5 feels slower than G4 core tuning for sure. At second it’s more clunky, but ttk is still the same, so you just unable to realize what’s going on and react properly. It’s the same one or two shots to kill with gnasher like it has active boost, but it doesn’t. Every time i trying to use wallbounce to evade enemy shots it feels completely useles like enemy has 100% accuracy and reading my mind. l’m very curious about Eleague gameplay, because it looked like a completely different game there.

There’s a little thread on the Boot Camp:

I know it’s not a biggie compared to other elements of the game, but right now Boot Camp just seems really patronising and a bit too… simple. I can’t see many players getting much out of it. It may be too late to change anything, but maybe for future reference for GOW6? I think there needs to be other ways to teach newer players, and help them learn things whether it’s weapon mechanics, or player movement.

I would suggest:

  1. Shooting Gallery.
  2. Score-attack mini-games (small map, infinite respawning enemies, and X amount of time to kill as many as possible. Maybe add medals and rewards based on score achieved (e.g.: kill 10-14 for bronze; 15-24 for silver etc).
  3. Combat scenarios which throw you into Versus AI situations where you are in an unfavourable situation and have to make a recovery - e.g.: start in KOTH 120 points down, and having to recovery from this).

Hi, this is actually the first time I’ve ever played Gears (PC player) and I’ve actually enjoyed this tech test quite a bit. But I do have some comments, mainly:

  • The chainsaw/reload input combination is a bit clunky, often holding the button takes too long and I decide to just melee the person instead
  • The shotgun seems broken, although it might be that people who are using the shotgun tend to be more skilled
  • The gore seems to be toned down from the other games (I downloaded Gears 4 and Gears 1 right after to see the differences)
  • Hit registration can be absolutely awful, sometimes it shows I’ve hit the person 4 times due to the marker, but then they kill me and I see that I had 0 hits, happens sometimes in melee too, but way more often in long range gunfights
  • The facial expressions look a bit static at times
  • Respawning when you initially join the game has some weird delay

Other than that, I’m really enjoying the game, I like the way the movement works, it’s very slick and easy once you get the hang of it. I like the tactical way you have to use cover, you can’t just rambo it, even when there’s only 1 enemy waiting in front of you. The killstreak items are nice, the maps are clear and well designed, hopping into a match is fairly quick.

you have a bug somewhere in the name/frag pickup logic. See this video clip ( 2 sites, sometimes the first one has problems).

I try to pick up a single dropped frag - nothing happens. I then throw away the flashbang I have, and try 2 more times - nothing happens. Then I wait a moment, try again, and then it works.

Other comments:

the radius and duration of the flashbang stun are both too small/short to be useful. It feels like you took the smoke number from Gears 5 and REALLY cut them down. I find it largely pointless - you have to practically hit someone with it to stun them. And the duration is so short, by the time you get there, they are no longer stunned. I threw a flashbang into a group of enemies and run up to them, only to have 2 of them shoot at me… What’s the point/use of that flagbang…

How it is NOW, it’s only useful for supporting team mates, I can’t use it for me, because I have to be so close to the enemies to have any hope of stunning them AND them BEING stunned when I get there, that I usually get killed trying to get that close…

It FEELS like you increased the detonation delay on frags. Big mistake. Make the frags like smokes or flashbangs, then they will be really good powerful pickup weapons, on par with boom and drop. Now they are waaaay too easy to avoid. (explosives are my speciality).

Incends: still pointless unless you actually hit someone with them. Enemies can still survive a near mis when they are still within the splash range , and can still run over/throu1gh a fire field…

Picking up frags on Training Grounds caused my camera to spin around, for some reason…

YOU LISTENED TO ME ASKING FOR AN OPTION TO DISABLE AUTO WEAPON RELOAD, THANK YOU!!!

Overall I am enjoying it, the movement feels… off… but maybe just because it’s different from Gears 4.

But please increase the range/time of the flashbang stun and decrease the frag detonation delay… Then it will be perfect :slight_smile:

Here is my somewhat positive feedback.
I like how shotguns do actual damage now. It makes the game more enjoyable.
The lancer is to op. It needs to be nerfed down to 8 damage per shot. This will provide more experience to use a rifle instead of lasering across the map.
The arcade gamemode idea is somewhat ok. I don’t like the general idea of it.

The tech test was super fun. There were a few things that, after a while, I started to question.

For example, why isn’t escalation intuitive? It’s just so complex. Even after a few games playing solo, I couldn’t figure it out. I promise I’m not dumb, I just don’t get it. Weapon placements and stuff. Part of the reason escalation was fun before is because you had to stay on top of everything mentally. Now you just give away weapon respawn timers :stopwatch: that’s a no no for me.

But the real issue I have is no damage boost with gnashes. You already took 2 shells :shell: out the chamber. Ok :+1:t4: I understand. But remove active reload damage boost? What? Why? It’s just such an integral part of Gears. You could have reduced the boost but remove it entirely? Oh my…

3rdly the smokes. Boy :boy: did I find myself yearning for ol’ Gears :gear: of War smokes. Why in the world does the smoke explode upon impact? When has a grenade ever exploded on impact in Gears? The flash bang needs a boost, by the time you get your gnasher out, the enemy is unstunned. The flash bang doesn’t do squat. And the radius is pitiful! Oh man :man: the grenades need to be worked on a bit…also there’s no reason front spawns should have their smokes taken away. No reason at all. I had more fun in escalation 1.0.

But good luck guys, keep at it. Guess everybody has their gripes.

Gears 5 is an amazing game to start of this conversation the gnasher is amazing love the hitmarkers the sound of the head shots the movement system is awesome I feel markza need to have more skill base to it very little recoil with a lot of ammo Same for Boltok no re coil very low skill base to use weapons the rocket launcher gun is overpowered by the time you hear the rocket go off your dead no time to avoid getting killed by it but overall amazing game keep it up coalition

KOTH spawns are still hot garbage. Either one team is consistently spawning closer to the hills or the enemy team spawns in the same spot you just did 8 seconds ago so while trying to push the hill you’re also getting shot in the back. They don’t feel improved over 4 at all in my opinion and at this point you’d just be better off converting KOTH into Annex and keeping the ring stationary.

For some odd reason, the more I test Gears 5 the more disappointment I feel building inside me. I am not sure why this depression is increasing the more I play it. I am level 35.
Can someone please explain this this to me?

The enforcer isn’t weak in arcade; seems like I get downed instantly from it, but it probably wouldn’t be used as a level-up weapon.

Not having the gnasher as a starting option appears to be part of the point. If it were made a starter, most players would probably choose the respective character and basically run rough shot over everyone starting with a rifle. I already see a bunch of people choosing the enforcer with the goal of getting the gnasher.

Sure, I can get into games reliably and it’s actually counting the Escalation matches, but every game I’ve had is littered with rubber banding and skipping and jumping.

All the players are 20 to 50ms ping which is great, but it’s practically unplayable.

So far loving the game and love the new weapon system. I’ve only been playing for a little over an hour maybe and i noticed that if you have cover behind a half cover and you move quickly between top and side aiming it can be very hard to hit you and accuracy is not affected at all. Gnasher range is too high for sure. It has no active boost, but one shots from too long distance still here. Sometimes i feel it’s even worse than G4 core gnasher. Maybe because of slower movement.

Hello Epic <3 Im loving gears 5 tech test so far

So the issues i have found so far are,

  1. the start button doesn’t always work on controller or keyboard
  2. alot of the time it wont show that your friends have joined your squad
  3. I dont know if this is a glitch but you can shoot around can aim are a conor and edge towards it and then you can shoot people without getting hit
  4. the xp friends system doesnt seem to be leveling up correctly

this is all i have found at this moment , but if its ok i would like to suggest something if thats ok
Please make it so you can play social like you could on gears 3 where you got to pick the game mode
imo it kept gears 3 alive for alot longer that it would of been, i love the idea of classes in quick play
but please make it so you can still play all the ranked game types but where its not ranked

Other than that keep doing what you do!

Ps My LCD is cracked to bits so if some parts dont make sense its becasue i cant see part of it lol

The game is fun always love the gears series. But the game movements feel really stiff. Also i dont like the new Escalation mainly the limits of respawn. also the damage omen is way too much cant see much when that happens and its annoying. im sure you guys will fix the game before it is released i cant wait, thank you guys for the amazing game you are making

Thank you, Coalition, for working so hard to make this weekend happen! I don’t know how constructive I can be because I don’t really have the technical language to describe what I want to talk about. There’s something about Gears 5 versus that’s just not clicking with me. It feels too clunky. I feel a ‘disconnect’ for lack of a better word. I don’t feel like my input is being registered. Here are a couple of examples: I “tell” the controller to snap into cover and it doesn’t work. Then I’ll try it again and then it works. Or I’ll fire my Gnasher but by the time it fires my hit lands on a wall that I was definitely not aiming at. This has been frustrating because as Gears is traditionally a very hectic shooter (I mean that in a good way) I feel at a disadvantage because I feel like I’m just ‘stuttering’ as I move and shoot through the game and then I’m dead. I’ve been a fan since the very first game. And I really clicked with both Gears 3 and 4 versus but 5 feels very clunky to me. At least in this tech test.
Sorry I can’t describe it better than that.
TLDR- Gears 5 versus feels very clunky and unresponsive to me. I feel like I’m stuttering through the game. Thank you Coalition for all of your hard work and making this game. I’m really looking forward to playing it and trying all the other modes too!

Feedback from a player who’s been here since gears 1. The ‘how you got killed camera’ has to go because that alone is enough to stop me buying Gears 5 and to top it off you’ve put a countdown on every weapon respawning… Really? A good player knows when a weapon is due to respawn you’ve just made gears such a basic easy game as opposed to having skill very disappointed and no sale frome purely because of this stupid kill camera and I have to constantly press x to hide it from my screen. I was looking forward to Gears 5 but now I’m not even wasting my money. Well done

I get this is a Tech Test but if Gears 5 is going to be like this @the-coalition consider this an epic fail (No Pun Intended). No wonder why at E3 you didn’t release any other details because you have started the downfall of the franchise. I put in quite a few games and found this: Lag is still there just like Gears 4 the higher the ping the better off you are. Hits not registering, how do you explain half a magazine on a player crawling, O wait he has 110+ ping! The commands are delayed especially the chainsaw rev, crawling is terrible very slow and your character goes in the wrong direction at times. If the rest of the Gears modes are going to be like this I think we all know as a community what the long haul end result will be. @TC_Octus
