Gears 5 Tech Test - Official Feedback Thread

It would be quicker to list what they got right, rather than what they got wrong, because they seem to have got almost everything wrong.

Chainsaw on RB? Wrong! It’s been on B for 13 years, but now we’re changing it guys! No. Initiate a CS battle with another Lancer user & you will see why this is a very stupid decision.

Melee for Lancer users? Judgment anyone? Lancer users already have a melee, it’s called the chainsaw! sigh.

6 shots in Gnasher? Simply not enough. Very strange decisions being made here, at some point someone looked at GoW4 & said no! 8 is too many! Crazy

Moverment, shot delay, Gnasher fire rate & wall bounce all make this game feel slow & a chore to play. Compared to 4, a massive step back in feel. It feels like there is an input delay to everthing you do. It is not good.

Red damage omen. Did anyone test this? It is unplayable with that all over my screen at arguabley, a time I need to see the most. Madness!

We can now jump over more/higher pieces of cover than before, a little like Judgment. Except unlike Judgment, you can’t jump of every bit of cover, just some. Which ones & why? Good question, flip a coin! The game now feels inconsistent & confused about how it feels about mountable cover. Not good.

I would complement the graphics so this post isn’t 100% negative, because on a technical level, they are very good & look good compared to other games today. But think what you saw during the Bullet Marsh section of GoW1 campaign, that’s Gears. Idk wtf this is honestly.

SUMMARY: Bad, very bad. There are so many design decisions here made to change how Gears feels, that I don’t think it’s salvageable at this point. With only a month and a half to go, I don’t see this changing much. It seems like the tried & tested saying of “If it’s not broken, don’t fix it” is not something understood by the people at TC. Sad unfortunately.

I’m with you… I’m not happy either… (Been playing gears since gears 1…)

I agree with pretty much every point.

There’s almost no delay between shooting and melee’ing, if any at all. It’s way, WAY to easy to just shoot at someone and then swipe at them for what feels like a free kill. I’ve both had it done to me and done it to other people, and it doesn’t feel good either time.

Speaking of the melee, it seems to stun people sometime, and sometimes not, seemingly at random. I’m not sure if it’s some kind of bug or if there are some parameters to it stunning/not stunning g someone.

truly the acceleration of the mouse is killing the game on the pc platform, and currently it is difficult to play the test, there are also performance errors, it lacks a lot in terms of optimization for pc

I agree, can’t get my cm-360 setup to match my other games. If you don’t get rid of mouse acceleration i’m Not playing it. Canceling my order tomorrow.

This is the slowest most clunky Gears of War game yet, Gears 4 was slow and clunky compared to Gears 3 because Gears 3 took far more skill in movement. This game feels even slower still. It’s obvious certain personnel creating this game has a real hatred for aggressive play. Still trying to turn the game into casualized trash that they want it to be, still telling the Gears community what we do and don’t want.

No surprise with Rod Fergusson, the man behind the sawed-off shotgun creating these games.

I am hitting all my shots on the body while using the lancer but I get very little game. Also the accuracy is very difficult and makes no sense. It said 11 hits but only 66% damage and got killed by a gnasher. Needs a help and accuracy and damage.

Why? So someone can spam the Breaker Mace and ruin my enjoyment of the game? No thanks. I think I’ll just carry on playing one of the other multiplayer games out there, Maybe one that’s made by people who know what they’re doing. I’ve clearly stated what my main issue is here and if it remains then my solution is what happened when 4 turned out to be a complete mess: I won’t buy it or play it.

Enjoy your empty servers, because this will rapidly go the way of 4.

I agree, feels like a down grade everytime, just to make the slower players feel like they are good rather practice to become good.

Some players dont even understand gears 4 yet they label people who bounce as hackers/cheaters.

I have had an level 300 tell me I’m glitches to get my movement in gears 4.
Because these players cant do it and dont understand, they slam it on these forums.
Then the devs “tweak” to make the simple un willing to learn feel better while playing.

This is without positioning bening mention.
I see people, even high level players, lancer and I kill them.
They be like how?
But they are just standing in the wrong place to lancer from … but again gnasher gets slammed.

They try to play like experienced players but dont understand how. As if they know your good but dont know what makes you good, and blame movement being to fast and overwhelming.

Why dont the devs keep skilled play, and add advance movement tutorials to bootcamp…

This new slow play makes me feel like an Olympian, participating at a kindergarten sports fest.
Trying to jump through the tiny hoops.

Sure pc players have better aim, But it is harder to grab any walls with a keyboard so they can’t move as much. I’m sure you’ve noticed it is more harder to grab walls than gears 4. There is also only 8 directions to choose from on a keyboard while controllers have a full radius. And if xbox players can plug in a mouse and keyboard, then why not do it yourself? You have the option. It seems easy enough right? Also not all pc players use mouse and keyboard, you’re making all pc players look seem like they are cheating.

Here are some of my thoughts:

-Sometimes you get stucked while crawling (most of the time). Specifically trying to crawl backwards

-Sprinting after sprinting/wallbounce/roll feels really delayed. (after rolling is understandable )

-Hurtbox while in cover is pretty big or punishable. I was covering on the same wall as my enemy and with just aiming the gnasher i got killed. It felt like curving a bullet

-Wallbouncing feels pretty slow

-One shot gnasher kills are pretty ranged

-Granade throws are way too punishable at mid range. Animation feels really slow. The slowest since gears 2 I dare to say

-Lancer recoil is a bit much specially when the bullets you hit barely do damage.

-Lancer recoil is pretty cheatable if you shoot and move the left stick while covering on a corner

-Lancer active reloads are a bit much rewarding. It take like 1/4 of regular hits to down an enemy

-Lancer granade launcher feels a bit slow

-Hammerburst is a two burst down instead of 3 (must of the cases)

-Talon recoil is a bit too much (I could get use to it but some less recoil would be nice)

-Foot noise is way too much

-Spawning is all over the place in koth. I killed 2 guys and they spawned right next to the ring. Literally

-Not sure about the 2 melee hit downs (knife is awesome though I’d love to customize it)

-Escalation between rounds feels slow and got me bored. (I’ll give it more tries though)

-On several plays I wasn’t on my enemy’s crosshair and still got hit. I wasn’t even on the screen once and I got killed. I don’t know if this is due to the servers, killcam feedback or hurtboxes.

I feel you want to change the flow of the game but it doesn’t feel like there’s any flow but to gnasher mid range or abuse the step noises to hide

Would like to re map the controls slightly I still think holding b is chainsaw and knife execute is y

Gnasher needs more rounds in as I tend to reload mid battle then start a melee fight with someone

Lancer needs more rounds in 30 bullets is not much I like 50 rounds but less power to balance it

Arcade:

Need some variety like spawn changes or weapon balances.

I noticed it becomes camping fest with snipers and embars in short time.

Had a few games of Arcade Quickplay last night. Not sure why they went with the name Arcade as to me that means playing for a high scores but whatever.
It was enjoyable enough. Here are a few postive/negative observations.

Postives

  • New gun sounds sound great.
  • The retro lancer. Love the lack of recoil.
  • No Gnasher at the start was refreshing to see and led to some exciting stand offs where teams were exchanging rifle/sniper fire at a distance and having to flank to break the stand off. Definately preferable to seeing players just bouncing about all over the place, dodging bullets before they shotty you in the face.
  • Graphically its very nice though i hope there are some traditional gloomy arenas in the final game.

Negatives

  • Chainsaw on RB button doesn’t work for me. There were times when it felt ok on that button but mostly it caused issues with reloading. Sometimes i’d press it to reload and nothing would happen. Might have been input lag i’m not sure but there were several occasions where it just didn’t work and its not my controller.
  • Lack of viscera when chainsawing an opponent. Honestly it looked as though i was sawing a rubber doll in half. Needs more mess like the other games.
  • Emotes. Maybe the world at large is begging for them. I just think they are dumb and it seems to me that The Coalition are just shoehorning them in to be like other games. There’s no shame in being different you know.
  • Maybe its just the roster on the test version but i seriously hope there are more characters available at launch. If this has been announced already i apologise as i haven’t been keeping up to date with the latest news on Gears this time around.
  • The new damage indicator seems a bit intrusive to me and not as useful to the player as the old one. It was not immediately apparent to me which direction i was taking damage from which led to a couple of deaths i might have otherwise avoided.

That’s all for now. Will have a go at ranked later.
PS bring back BEAST MODE

Hope that’s sarcasm because the Retro Lancer’s recoil in Gears 5 is ridiculously huge it’s all over the place, It’s Gears 3 beta Retro Lancer all over again but worse.

No sarcasm. I only had a short time with it yesterday due to death but my experience with it was that it was steady as a rock. Hardly any recoil at all. I was in Arcade mode though so perhaps the ranked retro is different if thats what you are referring to

It was Arcade mode since that’s the only gametype I can find and it’s really ridiculous, it’s most likely the same in Ranked.

I am playing on Windows 10 PC. I have noticed an issue using my headset where my voice is not coming into the game. I can work an XBL Party just fine, as well as communicate outside of the game just fine. I have disabled PTT as well as tried communicating with it enabled. Drivers have been updated, audio input has been tested. It appears that only the console players can talk in game chat (My experience). Please look into this, it is frustrating not being able to talk smack or communicate unless we use global text chat.

OK here goes…
People seem to go DBNO waaay to quickly.
The timer for weapon pickups on the maps is so bad, you don’t need to hold peoples hands in this way
The new damage icon does indeed suck massive balls.

Other than that I am enjoying so far.

A few of us (PC users)have been able to talk in game while in party chat (and not realise game chat was on till we started getting responses from the opposition)
