One thing that needs to change is the time to vote. 60 secs is WAY too long. needs to be like 15/20 make sure people are paying attention and not going AFK
The game is not bad overall. I will say the movement needs to be changed a little bit to accommodate wallbouncing. The slide distance shortens out making it harder to move and increased noob rolling. This kind of makes me think you guys snuck in comp 2.7 movement and does not feel like 2.8.1. The gnasher tuning is okay I ain’t gonna complain. But the movement needs a revamp
I’m enjoying Gears 5 despite the obvious lack of polish that comes in these tech tests, but there are some aspects and issues that are slightly hindering the experience for me personally and I’ve had a day to decide what I specifically don’t like about the game. It’s been said countless times but the movement does have issues. After taking cover the character will usually get “stuck” to it, the cover becomes pretty tough to pull away from - this happens on all types of cover. The game is also very unresponsive in regards to button prompts, more specifically vaulting over/running around cover. These issues mess with the flow of the game and are big factors as to why this game just doesn’t feel as solid as Gears 4.
Audio Issues: Footsteps can be way too quiet and sometimes non existent, making it hard to notice enemy players in some situations. I don’t know if this is an audio quality issue or a bug so I’ve put this here and in the bug reports thread. Grenade beeps are accurate for the most part, but there are times when beeps can be heard after the explosion when it’s too late and can sometimes not be heard at all
Matchmaking Issues: I understand this is the point of the test so it doesn’t bother me but matchmaking can be pretty messy. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve seen “Lobby Dissolved”. It mostly happens after Vote In Progress has reached 0.
I really hate the new Escalation mode. It’s been totally ruined. The lives system, the elimination rules, the way the weapon placements work… Escalation was my favourite mode in GOW4, but I can’t stand it in this.#
The thing is, it feels like the game has been built puely and specifically for eSports. But this is the absolute opposite of what should be happening. Games should be made for the players, and eSports built around the game.
Wish the delays after getting out of roadie run was shorter. I wouldn’t mind the movement mechanics of gears 3!
Also the difference between the hip fire to hard aim on the gnasher does not feel like it lines up the bullets accurately I don’t know how to explain. Popshotting seems a little wonky because of it!
Coming out of roadie run should be more quick and tight, the dance of gears of war must return

The look:
Not many issues here. But the damage reverse Omen is very obstructive as I feared watching gameplay prior to playing. -
The feel:
I’d say… heavier? There’s more “punch” I think. -
The movement
Simultaneously smooth and bad. Animations look/feel like they have better flow to them but everything is slower and not quite as responsive as I’d like. -
The Guns
Gnasher feels like there’s a firing delay tying into the movement which I don’t really like. Lancer damage is slightly absurd. Aside from that, I like the recoil they put in place. The way gunplay is crafted seems to encourage using non-power weapons placed on the map more than ever before. -
The maps
I share the same sentiment.
I’ll reserve my full judgment for when the game drops. I’m not a big Versus player anyway so what really matters to me are how the PvE modes hold up. I might come to like the game’s current feeling but that would take quite a bit of adjusting to.
The new damage indicator/bloody screen effect is so obnoxious and intrusive, I can’t see sh*t when I get damaged cause my entire screen is caked in blood. Please just revert back the Gears 4 damage omen or atleast have it as an option in the settings.
In the tech-test, I’ve noticed that the mouse wheel is unusable in some (all? Idk) key-binds.
In 4, I used mouse wheel up and down for lancer and gnasher. Strange ? Yeah but it’s better than removing my character control WASD to reach 1 & 2.
Is this perhaps done on purpose? Are we not allowed to bind the mouse wheel?
So far I’m not having a super big amount of issues but I had one instance I was dbno, I got back up and got into cover and a guy comes over to me and just instantly ground executes me like I was still on the ground even though I’ve been up for a couple seconds…
Footsteps are NOT quiet. They’re very loud for me and I don’t even use a headset.
Anyone else having the issue where after you finish a game, it loads for a bit before saying none of the results were captured and basically the game you won/lost didnt happen? But still get the xp?
Maps:
- I can’t say i dislike them, but at the same time can’t say i like them. Both maps definitely needs some dynamic objects. For District it can be an ability to open/close windows, for Training Grounds it can be automated covers. I really don’t know why DB themed map has no any dynamic object.
Weapons:
- Lancer and Hammerburst aiming feels off to me. I don’t feel the weight of them. Even Old Lancer feels comfort to use and stable without recoil problems.
- Markza is perfect, the most comfortable to use rifle right now for me. I always wanted less recoil for Markza in G4.
- Cryo Cannon. I’m not sure about it because i tried it ones, but i was defeated by gnasher on short distance, so what’s the role of it? I mean it’s a power weapon with kinda short range.
Movement:
- I like that sliding to cover feels more heavy, not a fan of how light it was in G4, but as many other people sait the movement is clunky or stiff. Trying to take a cover - rolling, trying to leave a cover - rolling, trying to change a cover - rolling, trying to take a cover edje - taking it in the middle, or taking it just before the edge. There are sooo many scenarios when movement feels incorrect or off.
- Old roadie run animation need to go. I still don’t understand why the new one was deleted from versus. It’s still in Bootcamp and in pc benchmark mode . The new animatin looks better, it feels better, what’s wrong with it? We still have the new granades and pistols roadie run animation, so why roadie run with rifles is old?
So far, whatever you’ve done with the current selection of weapons is really good. All the guns feel super solid to use,
The pellet counter on clean hits on the Gnasher is really nice information. Moreover the pellet counter makes me feel less frustrated because now I have information regarding whether I’m actually tagging an enemy, now I can clearly and visually tell when my shots are hitting, and if I should be changing up how I am shooting. Excellent work on that feature I really like it!
The recoil changes should make every weapon seemingly more viable and new player friendly which is pretty cool. The hammerburst feels heavy to use with the way the fire rate is setup right now.
Movement seems pretty solid to me, wall bounces feel good, coming to a full stop feels good, its definitely not Gears of War 3 or Gears 4 movement and I think this is a good thing,
The Arcade Deathmatch game mode that’s available right now is really interesting. At first, I was really turned off by how each character has a set of abilities or stats, and after playing it for a bit, I still largely feel the same way. I don’t think the extra stats are needed for this format, and I would like to test Arcade Deathmatch with just base cog and locust and see if the difference is worth actually complaining about. I will say that the game mode is fun though, the entire pace of the game is totally different than traditional Gears of War and it’s fun as a casual game mode.
KoTH is solid. The ring rotations on District seem a little odd but this is just a case of not enough time spent playing the game-type on the map I believe.
I haven’t tried Escalation and I don’t really intend to as the whole ±2minute rounds breaking up the gameplay personally drives me up a wall. This is an opinion. I do enjoy watching Escalation however, and from what I have seen from Gears 5 streamers on Escalation today, I feel like the game mode from a spectator perspective is very enjoyable to watch.
The Kill Cam is a nice feature. Viewing Kill Cam footage will provide meaningful information to a player much like how I believe the pellet counter on the Gnasher will too in that you can see from the winners perspective how you failed. It’s a solid teacher when it works in this version of Gears 5. Despite its current buggy state, I am very happy that you have given us the decision to opt out of viewing it entirely via settings. Any time you give us the power to change the game in a way that works for us is a huge plus and this is one of those instances.
Thanks for separating the roadie run, evade, and take cover on PC. I can’t wait to experiment with different controls. I’ve been wanting this since I started playing Gears 4 on PC.
The reload mechanic makes sense, and I really enjoy it.

I’m not a fan of G4 and G5 Hammerburst to be honest. I thought they will bring back a single shot Hammerburst for G5, but unfortunately it’s the same G4, that feels strange and sounds like a toy.
Gears 5 feels so slow compared to gears 4 even in koth. The movements and rodeo to wall then rodeo out of a wall is very slow compared to gears 4. It feels like your playing in mud or there is like a 1 second delay. The Gnasher is great I love it and the rest of weapons feel good to me. Graphics are great but I could use more blood all over environments when blown up by Gnasher. The omen is fine just maybe reduce the red coming in from the sides a little. I think this could be a great gears game but they need to make movement a little faster along with rodeo running cause everything just seems slower in this game in all modes. Let’s see if they fix.
It fires 6 rounds instead of 3 and you can just hold the trigger down now
Kill cam just highlights flaws in your game, should probably remove it.
Omen is horrible, can’t really tell how damaged I am.
Rifle strength + Escalation + KB/M will just make sure everyone turns off cross play after awhile.
Smoke grenades pop too quickly.
I don’t really like looking away from an enemies flashbang and still getting blinded.
There’s a random weird delay on firing the gnasher which seems to be correlated with how you move. It’s not great.
Playing a few KOTH matches, it’s much better than I thought It’d be from the game play I’d seen, but your kill cam highlights that the shenanigans are still here.
Also, please please make your splash screens skippable.
I Live in Western Australia how do I post to the coalition that the game freezes when coming out of matchmaking and that Australia as a whole cant get matches. Is the game region locked ? and why don’t they support Aussies Down Under
