Gears 5 Tech Test - Hard-Freezing GOW4 Style On Anyone Else? (PC)

I have also amended his post.

Ditto. Fingers crossed I assume they don’t want to mention Steam until the Tech Test phases are over, but I am dying to hear indepth info on the Steam version so I can start assessing.

I actually was able to play for 2 hours with no freeze. I’m kinda amazed of my luck today. It sucks that you have to get lucky to play, but it’s something I suppose.

What I don’t get is, if we’re on this forum, that TC always points out is only populated by a few thousand players, which is way smaller than the overall Gears population, and there’s so many replies within just a few hours here about the same issue, how the hell did this ever get by TC?

There’s literally no way they couldn’t have known about this issue, they have to have atleast a few 10 series cards they keep in test PCs around them, not even counting the tons of playtesters they have on PC. If so many of us just on the forums have the issue, imagine how widespread it is, and how many times they must have encountered it long ago already. They just kept hush hush about it I guess.

I assume it’s what I was saying, if it’s the same GOW4 issue as it seems to be, then they wouldn’t have a fix, since they still have none for GOW4. They are gonna stay quiet about it maybe, because it’s still pre-launch and they don’t want to cause a panic and mess with Day-1 Sales. It’s pretty messed up though, because if they have no fix, people will be screwed left and right.

It’s only gonna make them look bad in the long run.

Yea, it’s so random. I played a few long sessions last night. It just BSOD’d on me a second ago though. It takes forever to reboot when it does also, stays spinning on a black screen before finally rebooting. I don’t like letting it crash like this so often, feels unsafe.

Hopefully they say something soon, I’m sure they knew about it already, but they can’t act like they don’t forever.

@XtraTrstrL They have known about this issue for years now & for whatever season it’s not solved. You would think with Microsoft owning the Coalition that they could throw there money power around to get this fixed, but it’s just not happening.

Though I’ve since upgraded from 1060 gtx to an RTX, it is disappointing to hear this issue still exists. My 1060 is in my wife’s machine… I hope the steam version avoids the prob.

When did all this crashing start? What caused it? And will going through steam fix it?

Yea, I’m having the same issue. Every couple games I get a system freeze.

2-2.5 years ago.

Something that happened with Nvidia drivers post 382.53.

No idea. But I live in hope.

Bruh I can’t even get the game to launch anymore. I click on it in the start menu or the Windows store and nothing happens… No error messages just nothingness. I was able to launch and play the game yesterday, couldn’t start a ranked match but managed to play Arcade. Now I can’t get the game to even run. Drivers are up to date (431.36) there’s not a whole lot else running on my PC, I basically fired up my PC specifically to install and play Gears 5 since I rarely PC game. I have no issue getting e.g. Apex Legends to run though.

Oh, I even uninstalled and reinstalled the entire game to see if something got corrupted. Still won’t launch.

It started in gears 4 a long time ago, over a year.

There’s the thought that the crashing could be caused by a conflict in UWP (windows gaming) and if that is the case then the steam version would/should be clear of whatever the conflict is.

I wonder why it’s always been a console game :man_facepalming:. Its going to be quite difficult to fix too bc the problem wont occur enough for them to fix it considering nobody likes playing with pc players and turns cross play off :joy::joy:. Good luck though; I’ll be enjoying esky 2.0 in the meantime lolsss

Same issue, unable to finish a match without hard/soft crashes. ryzen 1800x + gtx 1070ti, same awful problem of the previous game. Hope it will be fixed in the final release because it’s beyond unacceptable this situation

It’s possible this is true, metro exodus crashed for me also and that was from the pc game pass. Nothing I have on battle net, origin, or steam has ever crashed on me. So weird.

Is the steam version going to be cross-play with Xbox players?

It is Nvidia’s fault.

I’ve had ZERO issues in Gears 4 or 5.

Prior to getting a RTX card, I stayed on old drivers.

Since getting a RTX card - never had an issue.

If you see people complaining, it’s the same 900/1000 Series users.

So whose fault is it really?

Yesterday i got a CTD as soon as i got into my first arcade match and that was it for the day but today i got on and it crashed within 20 seconds of launching but luckily it hasnt blue screened my computer so its better than Gears 4 in that regard

uh okay crashed AGAIN but this time i got a “game security violation” …in the middle of my second escalation match ever

1080 TI here. My game only crashed once. However, Gears 4 I had 144 FPS all the time on near max settings. In this game, even when I dial things down to low settings, my FPS dips way lower than that, usually 90-100 FPS. Hope it gets much better optimized before launch.

It actually started before 382.53, I think it may have had to do with Windows Anniversary Update, then 382.53 was the main driver to help resolve it. Then, Windows had more huge updates, I believe that’s what made the changes done from 382.53 onward not work.

Nvidia I think got tired of putting so much effort into helping on this 1 game, while MS was headstrong on breaking everything with their constant major updates and whole UWP environment. I can’t fault Nvidia there, after putting the effort to actually fix things and even get Shadowplay working properly in the tangled UWP setup.

Yea, I’m on a 1070, and usually was locked at 144 on GOW4. I noticed I was dropping to the 90s-100 also in Boot Camp, and turning down all the “MAJOR” GPU impacting Video Settings didn’t change things. I’ve seen @III_EnVii_III post his in-game Benchmark on a 2080 TI and even he was getting the same FPS range, that makes absolutely zero sense.

I hope MS doesn’t fight Nvidia when Nvidia makes Game Ready Drivers for the game, by putting out horrid Windows Updates to mess things up. You can see how bad MS has been on the technical side forever now, when it comes to anything to do with Windows Store and major feature updates for Windows 10. It’s their need to force the locked environment on us.

I remember recent articles talking about UWP allowing 32 bit software and stuff, now with MS getting ready to open up and the whole 1st party games going to Steam. That’s good, but they still have to do it right and it’ll take time to fix the mess, and it’s hard to trust their tech team when you’ve seen the state of the Windows Store.

There’s a little hope for the Steam version, but I can see that neither @TC_Octus nor any other TC member seems to have even commented on the hard-freeze BSOD issue in Gears 5 Tech Test or any other build of Gears 5, so, it’s a bit worrying.

Hey all -

Our team have been monitoring your reports closely. For anyone who has crashed, could you private message me your DXDiag just in case the team is in need of it?

Also, just to verify, please make sure you’ve followed all the steps found in our FAQ: https://Gears5.com/TechTest

As for these issues, the Gears 5 Tech Test is to help us make sure we provide the best experience when it launches on September 10. For Gears 5 PC, the tech test was released for exactly this reason - to see how Gears 5 performs on a vast array of different software and hardware setups.

While we don’t have an immediate solution to the issues we’re seeing reported in this thread, Gears 5 has improved telemetry for us to better track, identify and log the data from PC crashes and will be reviewing it in-depth in order to discern the problem that you experienced with your setups.

Crashing is obviously a frustrating experience, but please continue to play in the tech test as any additional data your playing can provide will help us provide a quality, stable PC experience for all types of players when Gears 5 launches.

We also recommend that you run the benchmark tool as this also provides us even more valuable data on your setup to help our investigation.

Thank you for playing and for your patience with testing Gears 5. If we have any updates during the Tech Test, I’ll make sure to jump back in and share them.
