Gears 5 Tech Test - Hard-Freezing GOW4 Style On Anyone Else? (PC)

The Freezing issue is tied to background recording on the windows 10 game bar. At least for me. Anytime I enable background recording, my game hard freezes in 1 or 2 matches. If I turn it off, then no issues. Same for gears 4.

Nawh, most of us turned background recording of Game Bar off years ago, when it was first mentioned as a possible reason. It can make things worse, but it’s not the main cause of the freezing on Nvidia 10 series cards.

Update: The highlighted fix for the Azure server sign in/out issue from my last reply, apparently doesn’t do anything for the annoying re-sync pop-up. The next time I loaded the Tech Test, it popped up immediately.

I’m running a 1060 and have no crashes I know overlocking the gpu messes with this game big time and gow4.

980ti tried the 60 fps lock didnt work so i guess another gears game i skip. Maybe master chief collection will allow me to live the fun days of my xbox days as it seems gears never will. Did someone mention about gysync causing an issue?

i have a 980ti and still crash

I reverted my drivers aswell.

what drivers are you using

I imagine the 382.53 ones.

so basically switch between drivers if i want to play and switch back when i dont oof

If you have 900/1000 series Nvidia, yes.

None of that works on the Tech Test hard-freezes. Either hold power button to hurry the reset process, or wait for the BSOD. It’s so annoying, because not only does it force a PC reset, but the reboot takes way longer than a normal one, with it sitting at the blackscreen with the loading circles at the bottom forever each time it happens.

Again, on GOW4, it’s a soft-freeze for me, where only the game freezes, and Alt+Tab works to get out and close the game.

I cannot fukcing believe this same nvidia bug has crossed over, like they forgot about it or the one guy from TC that always told us to rollback our drivers wasnt heard or they didnt believe him.
This crash is exactly the same as my gears 4 crash!
I get either game crash or full system crash with loud gun sound loop that you can only hold power button to.

If this is the same issue as gears 4 then it may plague gears 5 as they pretty much said it was not fixable as it was an nvidia problem.
Fingers crossed for a game ready driver and that future updates will come with nvidia drivers in mind

Dude, give up on gears 4, ive been sending them dumps and data for about a year, and if i get a response it is just to rollback drivers.
Just hope they listen for gears 5 now!.
Being purchasable via steam will give them 10x more pc players this time.

Just use Riva Tuna Statistics Server (that is bundled with AfterBurner)
U can limit fps globally or per game, and its the beat way to eliminate frametearing as it has much lower and stable frame times than any in game limiter

Yea, what’s worse is that I’m 100% sure they knew this issue existed for a while already in Gears 5. The forums are such a small % of the Gears community, TC points that out all the time, like when we’d ask for 1 universal COMP tuning in GOW4. They’d always let us know what a very small % of the playerbase we were on the forums.

So, with that being said, just look at how many replies are in this thread, in such a short amount of time, of people with the issue again. You have to believe that they have lots of Nvidia 10 series setups around them and on PC playtesters that give them info, especially with the issue still being around on GOW4, that they say they’re still working on fixing.

So I don’t buy the whole “certain rare permutations of PC setups”, it seems to be the opposite, it’s not rare at all, it’s extremely common with most any PC setup with a 10 series card. It’s just damage control, since it’s prelaunch, and they know so many people will immediately either cancel their pre-order, or decide not to get the game at launch or at all based on this info.

They’re just keeping quiet on it, and acting as if this is the first they’ve heard of it as we bring it up now. It’s absolutely nonsense, there’s no way I could believe they didn’t know for quite a while already. If so, they aren’t doing their jobs right, since it’d take very few 10 series PC rigs to run into the issue immediately.

The same exact rigs they’d use to test possible fixes of the GOW4 freeze would spot the issue in Gears 5, since it’d happen there also. It’s a tremendous disappointment. I mean, I was expecting bugs and glitches and other stuff that’d need fixing and Quality of Life improvements to mention, but this is insanity to have this issue carry over.

They’re not gonna put out a warning to potential 10 series buyers either, it’d be too damaging to sales, I’m quite sure. So, just imagine, with how many there are on Steam on 10 series cards, if the issue is there at launch, what this alone will do to the reviews.

The crashing was really bad for me tonight, 3 times within a few minutes of loading the game, back to back. It’s an uphill battle just trying to play this game, so sad for the franchise to be in this predicament.

Try this setting . Hight , v sync off , frame rate cap 60. I play for two hours with no crash

I can’t wait for the steam backlash community for this game, At this point the only way the devs are gonna (maybe) do something about this… issue, is with the ‘overwhelmingly negative’ rating incoming on steam,
If most people can’t even play the game?..

I mean, what else can the devs at this point expect from this ongoing issue for years?

Yesterday i have played more then 6 hours of gears 5 without a crash, arcade/koth/escalation you name it.
But at this point i can play for perhaps who rly knows, days without a crash and think ow yé, the bsod error is finally fixed.

And it could still crash after those days, ( it happend in gears 4 played 9a10 days without a crash and it just started crashing again, and i changed nothing.

Lol i would not be surprised if they delay/cancel the release for gears 5 on steam.

I had it capped @ 60 one of those immediate crashes, and always on vsync off, what is “Hight”?

Yea, that’s annoying, how random it is. You can have 2 different 3-5 hour sessions, no crash. Then it can crash 4 times in a row withing 1 minute.

No,

RT adds 3 frames of input lag delay.

In game limiters are always what I use.

You can set a custom FPS limit in Gears 4 yourself, but not from the menu.

It’s very simple and easy for TC to allow a box that just accepts a number.

Or even a slider.

I think only Nvidia can do something , they have to release the driver for Gears 5 at the release date
