I don’t mind having SOME remade maps. I have my favorites for sure, but we fail to realize one very important thing in this discussion every time a new game comes out. That is these maps play differently game to game.
This is especially true of GoW2 maps. GoW2 did have great maps but it also didn’t have rifles that were super effective like they were in 3 and 4. Like, playing Security, which was probably my favorite GoW2 map, is awful in Gow4 because you just can’t move around the map hardly at all. Rifles rifles everywhere. Which is fine, I’m not hating on rifle gameplay, but if the map isn’t set up for it it blows.
River is a map that is constantly brought up in this conversation. I loved river but it would be awful in GoW5, ASSUMING that the rifle play is equal to that of GoW4. If it’s not then all bets are off, but I’m assuming the impact of rifles will be similar. Imagine charging down the spawn streets through five lancers. Camp city. Of course they could make changes to it like they did to Jacinto between 2 and 3, but as is it just won’t work. I’ll also add the caveat that I didn’t spend much time in the tech test so I don’t really know how GoW5 rifles feel.
Let’s also remember how mad people were when they realized how many maps in gow4 were recycled from previous games, or from gow4 itself. If gow5 winds up with 30-40 maps, id genuinely prefer that 75% of them be new.
Notice that leaves like ten maps to be brought back. I DO like classic maps, I just think we need to be careful what we wish for. Some maps that I loved that I think would also work in gears 5, assuming rifles are similar to GoW4, are:
Memorial
highway
Allfathers garden
Trenches
Academy
Grind yard
Hail (if they made it symmetrical, otherwise I hated that map)
Sanctuary
Ruins
