Gear 5 Horde thoughts and discussion

Having watched Gears 5 at Gamescom, i see alot of backlash to Horde mode and im hoping TC are listening. Listening to Rod speak on it, i believe he proved TC and the fan base both have completely different views on what Horde is. So im laying out my thoughts.
Not to attack or ridicule TC, but to express my thoughts and sincere disappointment in what they have done to Horde. Which is, many would agree, the best and most enjoyable co-op experience on XB.

1.) Rod said that players used to lock down on position and fortify it for the 50 waves without moving to other locations.

  • The problem with Rod saying this is quite obvious. Players dont hunker down in one spot against their will. They dont try to fortify one spot because they have no choice. We did it because we want that. It gives a feeling of having a base. It encourages teamwork to defend it and upgrade it. It makes the fortifications vital. The feeling of being surrounded and set upon by the Horde comes from having a spot to hold up and survive in.
Horde is not the game type for run and gun, for changing location to a new spot “every 10 waves”.
I can’t speak for all players but i think its safe to say most dont want to be encouraged to be sprinting around the map changing 'power taps. They wanna hold up with their squad beside them supporting each other as a team.
  1. ULTIMATES
  • Oh where to begin.
TC, an air strike makes sense. If players had the ability to call in a Hammer strike in previous games, it makes sense to call in an air strike. That should be an ability called in from the Fabricator/Command Post for a LOT of power. It should never be a rechargeable ability SPECIFIC TO ONE CHARACTER.

Invisibility? I mean c’mon guys do i need to explain why a franchise as dark, gorey, gritty and intense might suffer abit of a tone issue with the introduction of Active Camo? This isnt a Sci-Fi franchise.
This isnt a cartoon. This is Gears.
“You can look over and see Kait, but you know she has an ability to TURN. HERSELF. INVISIBLE. so you dont have to worry if she gets into a tough fight”… wow, ok. Except we should. If someone is screwed in Gears, they should not have a magic turn invisible save your own ■■■ miracle super power to get out of it. You get shot to hell. You get a grenade stuck to your face. You get swarmed (pun intended) and your team should be your only saving grace.

X-Ray.
Alright other than the obvious. There was an xray in Gears 4. But way different. Being able to see through walls DOES NOT mean you can fire super bullets through that wall/WALLS and destroy anything through them. Bullets dont do that. This may be a fictional franchise but it has always been grounded in a sense of reality. Gears has always at its core given the impression Humanity is out matched and fighting an up hill battle. How can players feel that if they can go invisible, fire through layers of solid concrete and obliterate anything through it or rain hell on enemies just by waiting a few minutes for it to recharge?

  1. Jack.
  • Ok TC, credit where credit is due.
Jack looks badass. I loved the idea of having a player on my team being an engineer and being responsible for repairing our base. If thats being replaced with JACK. Thats awesome.
However, im confused as to how one plays as Jack. Is this an ability used at the Fab? Is it something specific to Del as an engineer?
Having Jack on the field would be great, but if a player has to choose to play as Jack and be on the field as Jack for the entire 50 waves? Well, i think you’ll find few would want that. Personally i think having Jack hover around our team doing passive actions to help, with a player(engineer) using a Fab ability to control him for short periods of time and using his abilities.
  1. Reach/Terminator/gimmicks
  • Let me start by saying i LOVE Halo. In FACT, Gears and Halo are the reason i own an XB1.
I have many fond memories of Reach and i LOVE Terminator 1 and 2… hell i even enjoyed 3 and Salvation (in denial that Genysis even exists).
But a problem is becoming very visible here.
TC, gimmicks are not a substitute for quality.
You cant shred Horde to its core and then say “oooh look Spartans in Gears!”
    Having these characters is awesome, i â– â– â– â– â– â– â–  LOVE Halo.
But i would sacrifice Chief himself in Gears for having Horde actually still be Horde.
  1. The big one CHARACTERS.
  • Oh TC what the â– â– â– â–  have you done. Choosing your character before going in to Horde mode is by far, the most important, most loved, VITAL, part of Horde mode.
This is because of a multitude of reasons i will try to lay out.
    A. Gears of War, as a franchise, has some of the coolest Character and Armour design in Video Game history. The Helmets, the Armor. Just badass to the core. And we want to use those designs!
Did it not dawn on ANYONE in TC that maybe the reason there was demand after demand to add certain characters into Gears 4 is because the player base cares so much about being able to choose a character?
    B. The campaign characters are great. I mean, they took awhile to resonate with the fan base i guess but hey they’ll do. I like Kait. JD has grown on me. Marcus is, well, Marcus ■■■■■■■ Fenix. And this is the reason we welcome them as our heroes IN. THE. CAMPAIGN. They are good additions TO THE GEARS STORY. They’re well designed and they look great and their Voice Actors NAIL IT. This is not an attack on those characters.
But i, we, dont want to chained to these characters. We want variety we want Horde to feel different from the campaign we want choice! We want the Carmines, we want the E-Day Gear again, we want to use the character designs we love so much.
    C. Saying the TC is not learning from Gears history is an understatement. Again, not ripping on TC, im grateful they’re keeping Gears alive.
Gears 4 forums were full of demands and discussions about they’re favourite characters being playable.
The Carmines and Gears in particular. The demand for the Onyx Guard was CRAZY. People hated the way they had to get those characters. Micro transactions SUCK. Glad to see them go.
However, its almost like TC were saying “ok lets get rid of micro transactions AND THE MOST VITAL ELEMENT OF HORDE AT THE SAME TIME”
Rod, TC. This is a mistake in an almost unexplainable way.
I cant understand how in the hell anyone at the TC could support the idea to remove Character selection and go for 5 set characters.
    D. The fact that you will be adding characters and maps with more SET ULTIMATES as time goes on is not save. It does not equal the same thing as desired characters being available to players. Hypothetically, lets say someone wants to play as Dizzy in Horde. Is he/she supposed to just hope he will be the next released Character sometime in the next few months and hope he doesnt come with a cartoonish style ultimate that ruins the immersion of the game? Considering the list of characters in Gears history, your one preferred character could be years away. And then, again, they may come with Ultimates no one wants.

Final point.
Rod, TC, there is alot of people who refuse to accept Gears im4 and 5 arent just Gears 3 with more maps. There is some unjustified childish trolls on here. Im hoping you know how to separate them from the real, legit criticism of what is an undeniable mistake.
This version if Horde. Is a mistake.

Hope this catches your attention. Still stoked for Versus and Campaign. Thanks for your hard work.
Drop the hammer!

TIL Gears isn’t a sci-fi franchise. It’s like they don’t have giant laser beams coming from space or flying drones and robots. Nope, definitely not sci-fi.

I fear there will be even more quitters in 5 than in 4. The fact that only one of each character can be played and not a duplicate is stupid. When they release new characters in the future, most people will be quitting games because they’ll want to play as the new characters.

Why do you care about tone issues for a cooperation mode with zero story incentive? Horde is its own thing, using the Gears of War universe as a background, not as a mean to tell you something like Campaign. The goal of the mode is to survive againt 50 waves of monsters and robots appearing out of nowhere, in a closed battlefield and with turrets created with magic power looted from dead bodies.

As for Jack, like Rod Ferguson said, it was designed for players not used to the gameplay of the game. Better to play with a useful newbie, right? And, like Gears of War 4, people will find a strategy to make it a powerful and not-boring-for-Gears-pros character in the highest difficulties. Anyway, it’s not like you have to have a Jack in your squad.

As I said before, I don’t mind playing with mandatory skins. I’d rather have a few well-designed characters than a shitton of uninspired skins like zombies, splash, color, Christmas, wrestling, etc… That’s just my opinion on that matter. Clayton is my favorite (whom I never played on Gears of War 4 because of the f****** RNG and, later, his cost), but if he’s not in Horde, I just hope current characters have good alternates (Kratos JD is a great start).

I really don’t like Terminator skins too.

I couldn’t agree more about the over the top character skins. The zombies and colour splash skins and Christmas skins in 4 were just irritating. Personally, id love the idea to play as whichever character is choose. To sum thats much more important than others.
But judging by the many forums here, youtube comments and Gears social media. Its the popular consensus that Horde should give the option. I hope TC fix this and you get the opportunity to play as Clay Carmine. Id love to play as Amthony or Benjamin.

  1. Disagree with this, I think the new Horde, rather than take away the option to have a single base, simply provides the option for teams to move around if they want. There’s a reward to moving around the map in the power taps. But you could definitely stay in one place and fortify it if you were so inclined and get through 50 waves, from what I’ve seen of the gameplay. So I think they’ve made really excellent design choices in this area by giving players more choice.

  2. Neutral on this. I don’t like hero shooters in general though, so I’m biased. I think the invisibility is fine, Jack has had that technology since Gears 1, so it’s totally reasonable that decades later this would be usable in the field. It’s also Horde mode though, which doesn’t have to be entirely grounded in terms of tone.

  3. Yep, Jack is awesome.

  4. Yep, I don’t like the weird gimmicky characters. Terminator is just wtf. But then again, a lot of people seem really stoked for the Halo characters, so it doesn’t look like TC made a bad choice there at least.

  5. 10000% agree. I don’t like this decision by TC at all. I’m a little worried though, because the skill cards already have character-specific art on them and they would have to record new voice lines for each ability for each new character. Still, as long as threads exist that are pushing back on it, I’ll join in the chorus of people pushing back on it :stuck_out_tongue:

I was thinking the exact same thing. I dont think going invisible is that far fetched with all the other things this game has in it.

Fantastic summary of thoughts there. I completely agree with all of them.
I’m really concerned they’re about to break Horde as we know it.
The Gears of War stories have always been amazing in my opinion, and love all the campaigns, but in all honesty, I buy Gears for Horde. I bought Gears 3 as I was desperate for Horde 2.0! I bought Gears 4 because I was desperate for Horde 3.0. But knowing what I know about Horde 4.0, I’m beginning to feel like I do not want it. Which is a shame considering I have the limited edition XB1X console bundle on pre-order (heck, I love Gears that much, I also have the Gears 3 360 console bundle and the Gears 4 XB1S bundle).

I really hope The Coalition listen to the fans and take these concerns on board!
The change I worry about the most is this idea of tying particular characters to a class. I do not believe that is in the modes best interest. It’s going to alienate so many fans that want the exact opposite - freedom to choose!

These things rarely make a difference, but I have created a change.org petition for this in the hope it gains some traction and gets noticed.
Feel free to sign if you fee the same.
Remove the character lock in requirement when playing a particular Class in Gears 5 Horde

Actually, having read this opinion on the OP’s first point, it doesn’t sound all that bad.
I think I misunderstood the concept.

Good points made. Two of my friends canceled their Gears 5 pre-order last night when they learned about the new Horde. They were just straight mad because they love Horde and felt like the changes were not in the interest of the fans.

I’m going to try it but I’m pretty picky about which classes I like to play so it leaves me in an uncomfortable spot. I hate quitting on people so I probably shouldn’t even queue in public lobbies. But, not one of my Horde buddies has had a positive reaction to the news so I don’t know if I’ll have people to play with. This is depressing. I hope TC is listening.

They’ll be plenty of people to play with. I’ll be on horde a lot and I don’t really care which class/hero I get to choose. Playing with one I prefer less will just make it more of a challenge.
I think they’ll be plenty of heroes added anyway and the starting fee is plenty to choose from anyway

A fair point. Having seen Gameplay footage now i see what you mean about the taps.

Dont sweat it theres a classic horde , like gears 2 iimagine a gears 3 and 4 type too

Why are you worried about going invisable ? Jacks been doing it since gears 1 its nothing new, bullets going through cover was added cause nobody would use X ray dude otherwise, everybody always moans on here, even if they made it like gears 4 everybody would say its boring

I’m glad time was taken to construct considerate criticism. I’m so sick of comment threads on other platforms that don’t provide the due deliberation I find here. It’s all refreshing, and I could hardly agree more. Hopefully TC admins see your points.

I hope TC doesn’t pay any attention to your post because I couldn’t disagree more with it.

I’ll wager the majority of players, which this forum doesn’t represent, are happy that horde is evolving.

People don’t want to play Gears 2, 3, 4 horde all over again. They want something new that has more depth.

Its going to be good for the game when TC starts teasing and hyping up new hero additions and the community can get involved with hero requests and coming up with ideas for character ultimates and abilities.

I watched TheRazorsEdge full 50 wave run today and it looks like a blast. Can’t wait for september 5th at 9pm est.

Great post! I agree with every word. Now if only TC would actually pay attention!

Watching Octus stream it actually looked like a lot of fun, and I was not a huge fan of Gears 4 horde. Of course improvements can be made, but there’s still enjoyment to be had as is. Octus said there would be a big effort to bring quality of life improvements post-launch, so look forward to that.

I totally agree that we want Horde to evolve. And I think it has been doing so nicely since Gears 2.
Every iteration has been ace in my opinion.
Most of the new additions in Horde 4.0 I have seen I feel is a great addition. But with a notable exception of the tying of Classes to particular characters. I am sure many like me feel this is an unnecessary removal of freedom. They could still have characters with unique Ultimates and abilities but allow the Class and associated skills to be selected separately - that would still be cool while encouraging players to perhaps try different characters where they would not before.

There must be many many more Horde players out there, who like me, selected a character at the start and always played as them. That was the embodiment of me in the game - and all the friends I played with done the same.

I know the Class system is a bit different this time round, in that they want to move away from the Scout collecting all the power and the Engineer spending it. But I still feel the game would benefit more if Classes and characters were separate.

Again, if others agree, feel free to support and share this. It may not make any difference, but if we can get it on TC’s radar it would be good…

I’m skeptical, but optimistic, about most of these horde changes. There’s nothing I’ve learned about new horde that makes me say eff this, I won’t try it.

Basically, I think there’s a pretty clear shift in how TC believes players approach horde and, consequently, how TC approaches it themselves. I think this was clear with the introduction of classes in gow4. Whether or not you like that isnup to you, but I think that’s an attempt by TC to keep the game fresh, which we know companies need to do. The introduction of heroes (my biggest concern) is the next (biggest) step in that direction, and I think it’s a reaction to how people approached horde in GoW4. By that I mean they (presumably) are looking at the outrageous frequency of quitting and are trying to give players a reason to stay in the match. I don’t have data on that but my guess is TC, as any responsible company should, views that as a huge problem they need to address. I think (hope) they also wanted to shift away from having necessary characters. Like…if you were going to do 1-50 on hardcore in a public match, how the eff are you supposed to do that without both quality engineer and scout? I know I quit out of matches early if we didn’t have an engineer or scout because…what’s the point? I play horde to do 50 waves and if we don’t have a scout getting power bonuses or an engineer who is building and repairing then it’s just not happening. It’s a big problem, and a predictable one, and I think the introduction of heroes is the response to that.

I also think they’ve tried to give the game a faster, more arcade like, feel. Yes, I know they have a mode literally called arcade. They had it in GoW3, too. But these changes are geared toward a faster game with more variety and less “imperatives” (the necessity of scouts and engineers I reference above) that hopefully should keep more players engaged for longer periods and more waves.

And frankly I appreciate that they’re taking this approach. I mean, it could be absolutely awful, I don’t know. I could be begging for classic horde by Halloween, I have no idea. But I give TC credit for such huge risky changes and I’m officially in “don’t knock it till ya try it” mode.

P.S. I have no idea what TC is actually thinking. I’m just trying to read the tea leaves.
