Finally Watched Game of Thrones

Alot of down time led me to watch all of GoT and I got to say I loved the first 4 seasons. They were peak television, writing, and world building. 5-6 had their moments and overall were good. 7 had less moments but was alright. Then there was season 8. For those who watched it. What did you think? Gonna leave the spoilers tag unless the discussions dive further into it.

Just watched the first episode. Ned Stark will make a great king, I can tell. He’s got a real good head on his shoulders!

I think he will, so long as Jaime is around to give him a hand.

You two may be more clever than Tyrion Lannister.

I started watching GoT after a friend of mine told me about the Spartacus TV series, which I watched in it’s entirety and loved before watching GoT

For a long time, it was hard to get used to GoT, as it was mostly melodramatic compared to the action of Spartacus. I’m glad I stuck with it though, because GoT not only had good writing and characters, when it brought the action, it was epic.

I feel a lot of people unfairly bashed the final episode. It was a logical finale if you ask me.

The finale was garbage. I am not saying that those decisions themselves were bad. GRRM may very well intend that as the ending to his books as well. But the execution was terrible. The writing was botched and the show was rushed. I just wish it got the love and time it really deserved.

The ending was just to sow things up story wise. While some may think it was rushed, as far as the impromptu jury proceedings and such, consider that many probably would have complained even more had they dragged it out after such an epic battle prior.

Well then I would argue if they were going to extend it then the battle wouldn’t have been there. It is hard to please everything and in the long run a writer should get to decide what happens in their story. But it at least should be executed with an enjoyment and respect of the series. Don’t feel they still had that love in the end.

Now you’re talking nonsense. No epic final battle, when the whole 8th season was leading up to it, if not most of the series?

I’m not saying there would have been budget restrictions, as the series was mega popular and they could afford to do a lot. I’m saying it made more sense for story reasons and avoiding a boring ending to have a quick impromptu hearing and meeting to decide things.

A lot of high ranking people had died, they had to go with whom was best suited, and a long drawn out proceeding to decide all that would have somewhat negated the effect of the final battle.

Okay. By “not been there” I mean they would not have kept it where it was. They would have put it somewhere else. If they took their time and did more seasons it would have been pushed back to those later ones. And those leadership decisions and quick and decisive action would make more sense with more story behind them.
I get that may be the way it happens irl, but this is a tv show.

Well, honestly, GoT may not have been as action heavy as say the Spartacus series, but as the season went on, they included more action and epic battles, and they were largely what fans looked forward to, even though the writing was pretty decent.

So it seemed appropriate they had the final battle when it was, and not drag out the proceedings thereafter. Most of the dramatic scenes in the series had a certain suspense because you always knew there was dialog or actions within an episode that could culminate in a fight, and often did. To end with much of the final episode being void of any suspense with nothing but court and appointments would be too much of a lull, especially if drawn out into more episodes.

I get that many wanted the story to go on and show more resolution, but with so few key characters left, there wasn’t much left to resolve anyway.

My fave part of the final episode btw was not the legal decisions or appointments, but the way Drogon went through a roller coaster of emotions, first rage at Snow after he killed her, then realizing it was her lust for the throne that made her crazy, as he melted it in agony, then exiled himself, carrying Daenerys with him.

That one scene alone made it a good and appropriate finale for me. The rest by comparison was practically mundane.

I did enjoy Drogon in the throne room. I’ll give you that.

But to sum up. I do think that this season feels rushed in universe because it was rushed in real life with the writing staff. I still think that could’ve been seen since season 5, but it still held what made GoT great at certain points. Felt like all that was thrown out of the window.
Jon had as many lines as an Oblivion NPC, Varys had some of the dumbest decisions and biggest 180 from any other character. The merc army was a joke and the iron fleet was good and bad when it needed to be. I would not call that decent writing. Nothing wrong with big battles as long as they follow the rules and make sense narratively.

I also thought Clegane-bowl was okay.

If I had a nickel for every time someone on the net implied they could write better than those doing it for huge movies, TV shows, or games, I swear I’d be a millionaire.

I’m just saying I’ve seen my share of pretty badly written shows, and avoid them like the plague once I know they’re prone to that, but GoT’s final season was far too picked on for it.

A lot of fans threw the whole series under the bus for it, and I just had to face palm.

Lol. Believe me. I am not saying I could write a better story, but I think any fan can critique an artist’s work. And like I said, I don’t think all of the decisions were bad within themselves, their execution was just not up to par with what the show is known for.

Sorry you feel that way, I just can’t agree.

BTW, are you watching other content HBO is involved in, like Westworld, the Chernobyl mini series, and Watchmen?

I had to crack up when I saw Jeremy Irons on that bizarre little “fishing trip”.

I just finished the first season of Westworld. It was fantastic. Better than season 1 GoT tbh.

Yep, biggest budget show on TV, and it shows in every way. Since they’re spending 2 years making the next season, I’m expecting great things.
