[Feedback After Tech Test & Release] Gears 5 New Inverse Omen

They did ask us to wait and try it out for ourselves. We have, a lot of people don’t like it for good reasons and perhaps some as well who don’t like change.

Hi,

I really like the Ice omen way of showing damage, it looks great, and it isn’t too intrusive…

The RED OMEN, however, is just blinding and disorienting…

See this clip - it might not seem like much watching it now, but when that red flashed and filled my screen, I completely lost visual track of where he was! By the time I could see again, I was dead…

Now for an even more extreme example, check THIS out - when I went full red, I was completely blinded! I could see nothing… This is beyond stupid, it’s like, in the middle of boxing match, someone throws a cup of water into one of the boxer’s face and eyes. It totally makes them useless for a fraction of a second until you recover from the shock, and by then it’s usually too late…

Now here is the ice omen in action - I have zero problem with that. You don’t lose your peripheral vision, you don’t get those stupid red lines from the corners into the centre blocking your vision, etc…

The Benefits of the new omen system we were told were:

  1. shows different type of effect: weapon damage, ice damage, and stim
  2. shows you direction you are being shot from

well, neither of those really factor in multiplayer… There is no stim in multiplayer, and the ice/damage is only an issue on one map and it happens usually so quickly, it doesn’t make that much of a different. Re direction of fire - sure, if someone is plinking at you with the snub, firing 1 bullet per second, sure, it will tell you from what direction the fire is coming from.

But the much more real realistic scenario of getting lancered down, there is almost no time to see where the fire is coming from - you have to dive into some cover immediately and hope you guess the direction right… And in up close gnasher battles (the staple of Gears, right), this is irrelevant…

The benefits, FOR VERSUS, are non-existent, and the damaging effect of that full-screen-red-cant-see-anything-what-just-happened to the experience of the most iconic of Gears MP activity (up close gnasher fights) is devastating…

I agree, this new omen has made me lose my opponents exact whereabouts,m I would strongly like the old omen back.

The only good thing about the new omen is that it shows you where you are getting shot from, so if they could bring that into the old omen that would be great and it would be a step in the right direction for the game…

It won’t go away, we made a lot of noise about it since since E3 and they didn’t care. In a recent stream they said they’re talking (just talking, not actually working on it) about tweaking the transparency of the new omen, not like it matters though, since the optimal and perfect solution would be to revert it back to the classic one.

Btw, ignore the users that are gonna come and defend it with the piss poor argument of “they needed the new omen to make the new stim/freeze effects work” since they’re only parroting the mediocre excuse TC gave them. Those effects could’ve worked perfectly with the classic omen and the result wouldn’t look as intrusive.

I really think this is a subject that TC, as stubborn as always, won’t budge.

Yeah the new omen is really bad. I just really don’t understand the reasoning behind this. It’s been a staple in gears and you change it why? There’s just a lot of issues and it’s a shame they don’t even listen to feedback apparently.

Remove this trash and revert to Gears of War 4 style.

I’ll only be playing Gears of War 4 until this broken game is fixed.

To be honest i was a bit surprise it made it to the final game after the beta. Thats one of the worst point of Gears 5. I really hate that new damage omen.

I guess time was a problem as the beta came close to the release of the game? If so just adress it and says “we heard you, soon as we can, we fixing it” and everybody will stop complaining. But really i have not seen ONE player saying he prefer this omen than the old (now i guess some will come here and say it just to prove me wrong but whatever lol)

I don’t know the percentage of players that like the new omen to the old. As far as I can tell from others I’ve talked to and reading some of the forum posts the ratio to like vs dislike is well in the dislike category. I hope they fix it because I’m not a big fan of the change either. It’s too cluttering for the screen, it obscures vision, and more often than not I’m fighting the screen more than what or who is shooting at me. It wasn’t a necessary change, and I hope they listen to feedback and at least give a toggle feature to switch it back to the old. I’m sure all they have to do is load the old omen files and plop some code.

Either way, meh.
