Maybe I’m late to the party, but I never knew they can collect power. It doesn’t seem purposeful, but they do.

Yes, they can. Not that you can direct them - they go to all sorts of weird places!
Last match I had on Pahanu they went up on a cover ledge and got stuck until they exploded
