Double stars greed

I made it to major last night (iirc), have 12 levels left in the TOD. Been grinding my butt off though.

I’ll admit I progressed a lot faster in the last week, when I started using iron to reroll so I could do more challenges in a day.

Have most of the medals too, aside from the escape ones, that I probably won’t do.

The double star days really help, and it’s a shame that it’s tied to having boost

I finally reached General last night and got my weapon skins. Not going to lie, I spent probably 200 iron because I wanted to finish the damn TOD. I dont care I spent that much either. I can now take a break from this dumpster fire.

Nice! I’ve spent about the same amount so far.

It’s really annoying when you spend iron to reroll and get 1 star objectives. It’s infuriating when that happens multiple times in a row.

I limit mine to 20 iron rerolls max. Once it hits 30 for a roll, I’m done for the day.

I try and time it so I get 2 free sets of objectives and one iron set per day. Since I employed this system, I’ve been able to go up one or two levels per day (depending on the luck of the rerolls of course)

My point was that 1 percent isn’t a valid measurement because it’s one percent of all players, not active players.

I’m one rank from Captain. I just want that achievement and then I’m done. Didn’t buy any iron but I was lucky enough to log in many times a week to do challenges.

Wasted too much precious gaming time to grind medals. I’d prefer to play KotH and a little bit of horde.

Soon all progress will be erased and it’s grind on again. Awful, awful stuff.

It’s a big grind, that’s for sure. I just want the team rock skins.

I personally don’t care for achievements anymore, after losing my original profile with my gears seriously achievements and such…

I do like getting gears achievements though. TCs achievements don’t work well for me, which is annoying.

I completed gears 4 like 5 times on inconceivable and never got the achievement for it.

Beat gears 5 on insane and never got the achievement either. Apparently I never completed 6 chapters, despite beating the campaign

Well Microsoft themselves boast about overall players. How would you define an active player? Anyway, if that 1% of 3 million is a majority of active players then the game isn’t necessarely in good shape player count wise.

The only people that are finding the ToD to be a grind are the ones who only play one specific mode. Like the Versus only players and the horde only players. Which in that case you can’t play 33% of the game and expect to get 100% of the rewards.

Wrong.

First of all, it takes hours and hours of playing and obviously even boosting so it’s a grind by definition. That’s not really even debateable. Not all grind stuff is bad of course but…

It has a time-limit. So people complaining are those with limited time to play. Even if you’d play every mode you still have to use your time to grind modes you’d prefer not to play to progress. And it’s not just versus or horde, it’s specific modes of versus, specific classes in horde etc.

TC are of course kind enough to sell you iron to speed up your progress. How cool is that? How did they guess people with limited game would struggle to get it fine before all progress is erased?

Wake up dude. Gears 3 was a grind to unlock medals but you’d unlock it all eventually by playing whatever mode you wanted whenever you wanted. That’s the system we should be asking for.

Which is why you have 3 months to complete it.

Ok? So what’s your point? Regardless if there’s a time limit or not, the players who put in more time than others will still have more things unlocked. Plus the operation being 3 months is not unreasonable by any stretch of the imagination. I haven’t “grinded” out any modes and have over half the medals unlocked already and I’m captain III right now. There’s still two months left. As far as being forced into modes you don’t want to play, that’s on you. In most games, you can’t get everything if you don’t participate in the other modes. I personally like that it incentivizes people to go outside their “comfort zone” if you will. I also haven’t spent any iron on challenges either. I’ve just done the 3 dailies (plus the free daily re-roll).

Once again, I see this as a good thing. Get people out of their comfort zones. If you have challenges/medals that encourage people to play different modes it helps keep certain modes that would otherwise not be as populated alive. And what’s wrong with trying out new things or getting better at different modes?

What is this the Alex Jones show? Wake up? lol. I never said that Gears 5’s unlock system was better than Gears 3’s. Just making the point that the ToD isn’t a “grind” as you say. If you really want to compare them though you have to take into account all the microtransactions gears 3 had as well with no chance of unlocking them for free. At least with this system, if you put in a decent amount of time, you can unlock everything.

  • It’s a grind regardless of 1, 2 or 3 three months to complete it.
  • Players who put more time or money will have more things unlocked. Mtx is the reason it’s time limited and a grind.
  • There’s threads around the internet for tips to grind medals. People feel they have to grind it.
  • You must have played some insane hours then. I have 23% of medals and I’m a rank from Captain I. Anyway, unlocking all medals is only ~60% of ToD so you need daily challenges. Many of them. Still doesn’t sound like a grind to you? Is Captain III even half of ToD?
  • Yeah that incentive to play outside of comfort zone sure seems to be working, right? Look at those achievement unlock percentages. And you just described a system that affects your gameplay experience. Again, nothing wrong with mode specific unlocks but as you know, it’s the time-limit again.
  • Is there a chance to unlock skins like Delivery Driver Mac for free? I mean yeah, if you save all the little iron you get by playing but come on. Is it even possible to get so much iron by playing?

My point still is that it’s a system designed to make people spend money on progression system. On top of direct purchases. Defend this system all you want. Don’t try to change the definition of grind though.

What one does or does not consider a “grind” is entirely subjective.

I agree that the MTX system is bad in Gears 5. But I know plenty of people on these forums who are already general and also have full time jobs and other responsibilities and also haven’t spent a single thin dime on iron. Buying iron is by no means required for getting everything nor have I felt the need to purchase iron to progress through the ToD.

Yeah just like there’s threads around the internet for the fastest ways to get anything in video games. And as I said before, what one considers to be or not to be a “grind” is subjective.

Not even close to an “insane” amount of hours lol. I play much more rainbow 6 than I do Gears 5 and I haven’t found myself sweating and grinding every day to reach Captain III. As far as the overall star requirement for General, I don’t know if Captain III is even half the star requirements. As far as dailies go, you get 4 per day. 3 when you boot the game up and the one free re-roll. If you’re unlucky that’s only 4 stars total, if you’re really lucky that’s potentially 12 stars total for daily challenges. But most people will get something in between.

The percentages mean pretty much nothing. As the large majority of people playing Gears 5 are playing through gamepass. You have to take into account all the people who played it just to try it out because it was part of game pass. I would prefer no time-limit on the ToD. But I don’t think the time limit we do have is anywhere near unreasonable.

I’ll answer that question with another question. Was there a chance in Gears 3 to get any of the maps for free? The LE characters? The Horde add ons? No. There wasn’t. So I’m not quite sure what point you’re trying to make here. Full disclosure, I’m not a fan of the MTX system TC has in place, but it does help ensure that extra content down the line stays free so the player base isn’t split. No worrying about “Does our friend have this map pack? Oh… he doesn’t well I guess we can’t play (insert playlist here)”. Once again, I’m not saying Gears 5’s unlock system is better than Gears 3’s. But there was a lot of stuff you had to fork over money for in that game as well.

Tour of duty shoud be some kind of re-up system and double stars should be for everyone.

I agree.

And I also think that those complaining about the grind are the ones who don’t even take a single sec to research strats to efficiently grind some of the challenges. They look at the numbers and go “Oh golly, that number’s way more than I can count on one hand, it will take me years to finish.” The vast majority of the challenges can be completed fairly quickly, making you breeze through the ranks like there’s no tomorrow, but of course ppl would much rather “earn” everything day one instead of putting in any sort of effort towards something these days.

Nothing wrong with a grind, just shouldnt miss out if you go play other games or something

Yeah the person you’re responding says it’s not a grind, you’re talking about grind and how to do it quickly.

I even wrote not all grind is bad but the point was, you have to play specific modes, specific characters etc with limited time. All because of mtx.

Has anyone asked to earn anything day one? I mean, everyone knows those challenges won’t take years to finish :stuck_out_tongue: 3 months tops. Maybe research the topic first next time.

Ok I won’t argue about this anymore. You enjoy this system, fine.

To answer your question, I was talking about the Gears 3 unlock system to grind without time-limits. Of course I appreciate TC adding maps and stuff for free. Of course some of that will be characters already in game like Cole, Baird and Paduk, but thanks anyway. Hope they aren’t as lazy with free maps as they were in Gears 4, most of them being old maps or different versions of maps. They also did ship with less maps.

I personally find this system much more scummy than selling a season pass and some extra skins. You also got a quality campaign dlc on top of map packs & horde. Now a chrome weapon set costs more.

And you get to grind again in 3months!

1- Was just confirming my position in regards to the grind/ToD to the individual I was responding to. If you though it was meant for you, you’re wrong.

2- All games that adopt the battle pass model, which is what the ToD essentially is except for free, makes you do specific tasks and at times in specific modes. Nothing new here, you should probably be the one to do the researching on that end.

3- I’m fully aware of how long the ToD is going to last. The comment you’re replying to was more in reference of how people felt about the ToD/grind in the forums in general, not in this thread specifically, while using a bit of exaggeration/humor to further convey my message. Try not get your panties in a bunch when reading my posts.

Have fun grinding ToD.

  1. I didn’t think it was meant for me. I just pointed out your thoughts about people complaining are way off.

  2. Yes ? That’s kind a what many are upset about, why bring this Fortnite/Apex stuff to Gears.

  3. Right back at your panties. I know you know your ToD, I was just wising off. With an emoji and all.

Thanks and you too.
