I heavily dislike SJW narratives and modern Feminism. The phenomena of the gaming industry being heavily influenced by SJW, Feminists and other extremists is a very real thing. And it is dangerous to art and entertainment. Battlefield V is one of the more recent examples of how a game can be utterly ruined by forced SJW narratives. However, I´m not going to discuss this further. Just saw that it was mentioned several times in this thread and I think the outrage for Kait has indeed some root in the rejection of PC culture.
However, I personally do not believe that the choice for Kait was being made out of political reasons. Kaits importance for the further story was foreshadowed in Gears 4. It make total sense to focus on her. I am open for this new approach and I´m curious to see what they manage to do with it. A story about a person, who appears to be the descendant of the leader of an army of genocidal monsters, who whiped nearly all of humanity out, could be very, very interesting and good. It might even become the deepest Gears yet. BUT to me there is a problem. Kait was a very weak character in Gears 4. All in all, the whole cast in Gears 4, except for Marcus and the other old characters, was very weak to be honest. JD was bland and Del was very annoying. Kait was especially bad. She was very whiny and she was acting very irrational for most of the time.
I can understand that the life of her mother was at stake. I can understand that people, especially young adults, often act irrational. But, WTF man. Marcus is a veteran who fought in two wars, against people as well as monsters. He ended the latter and saved humanity (With the help of Delta Squad and more of course.) Maybe, just maybe, it would be a very smart idea to listen to his advice. To listen to what he has experienced in the pod. To listen what this guy is saying, would be the next, best strategic move. This guy surely knows what he is doing. Yet Kait acts like a brat and doesn´t even consider his advice, until they´ve reached the nest and she suddenly realized “Oh ■■■■, should have listened to the veteran and war hero, who obviously has like 500 times more experience in military tactics as well as fighting monsters of all kinds!!”. Yeah, wow. They could have saved so much time. Maybe Reyna wouldn´t have had to die? And what worries me is that I see this typical Kait behaviour in the very first trailer we have for Gears 5. And this is supposed to be the/one of the main characters? I´m not so sure whether that will work. She is, again, acting very selfish and irrationally.
“Screw your orders! This isn´t about you, this is about me”…Jeah…if that speaks for the rest of the story…than Gears 5 campaign might be doomed.
However, I´m willing to give them the benefit of doubt. Mabye Kait is purposefully written like this and maybe she will develop as a character over the course of Gears 5. The same of course applies to JD and Del.
We´ll see how it turns out. I think people are jumping to conclusions way to early. I can fully understand to being distrustful after Gears 4. But there is a chance that it will be better this time. I can understand the mistrust seeing another game suddenly changing it´s main character to a female. There have been plenty of occurrences where this was forced and I too reject PC/SJW culture. But not every game that stars a female lead is SJW garbage by default. That is just a very ignorant view. It may have happened to Battlefield V and Uncharted 4. But at the moment there is nothing that alludes to the same thing happening to Gears 5. Let´s wait and see how it turns out.
