Duplicate classes didn’t cause any problems in Gears 4. Really can’t see how it would cause a problem now.
We even had achievements tied to playing the same class.

I played as Clayton (as the only Clayton) using Uncle Clay and I was noticeably tankier. The key is that the damage resistance for me as well as team mates only kicks in if we’re in the 10 metre range of each other. If I venture out too far then I noticeably took more damage and went down more easily. So Uncle Clay’s effects do not apply seem to apply to Clayton at all if he’s not in range of a team mate.
which is exactly why TC is gonna do it.They always miss the bigger picture and ■■■■ everything up.
Main issue I have is that despite Gears 4 existing, “balance” is a concern for TC now apparently, with duplicates.
My worry isn’t about players using duplicates, they are entirely free to do that. It is about TC screwing over players who do not use duplicates and/or may be pushed towards it if/when TC nerfs, sorry, “rebalances” individual classes because they think it has to be done with class duplicates. When the entire point of Op 4s balancing was to make the majority of individual classes more powerful and/or unique in their own right.
Or really, I just don’t see why/want things should be/to be nerfed on an individual basis just because there is the possibility of people using multiple of the same classes in a non-competitive environment against bots. Like I said. Why should my own individual class be terrible or only barely good because others can use it in the same match as me?
Again, if future Horde leaderboards are a concern, then counting times from runs with no duplicates only could be a solution. It seems doubtful people who organize a ‘fun run’ with 5 of the same class would care about where they place on a leaderboard.
Do you see my point? It isn’t about me having an issue with player freedom. It’s more about how an apparent focus on “balance” could get in the way of enjoying a class playstyle by itself without having to mind others also wanting to play it in the same match resulting in it being made less powerful by itself.
(Yes, I know, separate post even though I made one already.)
Given that the skill’s functionality says it technically requires Lizzie being close by(with the caveat that with the current glitch it is any character), it makes sense.
I understand.
I hope you also see TC will always gravitate toward the nerfing of the most used metas.
It’s been their pattern from the start.
Yes, I agree it will bring future individual skill nerfs.
As for leaderboards…I have no interest in them. I can’t think of a single leaderboard in Gears that hasn’t been exploited. It’s always seemed to me to be a false measure of nothing.
I hope they don’t add them for horde.
How many snafus did we see in Gears 4 horde leaderboards?
Has anyone tried with Grace? I would, but I don’t have her.
Well… I don’t recall much for those besides knowing “score” runs would be terribly boring and drawn out because to my knowledge, they would involve downing any or as many enemies as possible twice until then killing them with a headshot. Never interested in that. Not a measure of skill but how much time you want to waste with an ultra boring way of playing. I don’t see it being much different in Gears 5 Horde.
Though there was the infinite power duplication glitch introduced in June or July with Inconceivable which probably threw any leaderboards in Horde to the wind anyway. I used that with some friends for some fun - in private lobbies - back then, when they asked me, but it got boring quickly even when it made matches last an hour or so at most.
The way TC seems to have made the leaderboard scoring works seems counterintuitive to a degree anyway and just force ways of playing that don’t seem natural. I’ve certainly never bothered running the -to me - pointless Score Boosts nor doing such a run in either PvE mode.
Let me run an idea I’ve had mulling around for a while.
What if instead of changing (nerfing ) skills, TC instead focused on the AI side?
For example, let’s say JD was initially too powerful. What if TC programmed the AI to focus more on him? Keeping his head down more and slowing his ability to spam.
What if instead of nerfing Marcus, the AI would double the shocks and flash bangs tossed his way?
You’d either have to get really creative to keep the current meta or the meta would change through the enemies response.
As a hero got more aggressive, so would the AI toward that hero. Would definitely make solo tough or impossible.
They did that in 4 and it worked somewhat.
I can’t remember them all now that I’ve been exclusively 5 for over a year but I do remember how Elite drones actively sought out Scouts to chainsaw. It seems as if every class had a counter and that if you had all of that class then your disadvantage was major. I prefix with “seems” because I’m not sure that the soldier had a counter.
To add on. They should really bring the swarm melee counter into horde and escape. That move in the campaign is a freaking game changer and I would love to see it added to horde.
@avaramis I remember they had a drone who would seek out the scout and plant a grenade on them. That was annoying but it was awesome at the same time lol. That drone is still there to this day taking out scouts lol
It’s very likely this was a result of the Scout class being your power workhorse as opposed to Jack in Gears 5 and a double bonus to power picked up while the wave runs. More chances to run into a Drone Elite with a chainsaw.
Well,
I must say for myself alone, I agree and disagree with you on this.
TC wanting to push the envelope for new things is not a bad thing. However in the way this has been carried out has put it in a bad place.
Maybe if they tested everything before release or perhaps did a community “What I want” vote in the actual forums, could possibly change some people’s views.
But, at this point they have lost so many fans due to the initial stumble, they are going to have to do a lot to win then back. I mean, I love Gears but with OP3 I completely stopped playing the game. I guess they won me back with OP4 but then lost me again with the botched release update.
So at this point who knows what OP5 will really be like, but I do hope they don’t ■■■■ it up.
Cheers!
Big if there. They didn’t even realize that Lahni got weakened with OP4 until being called out on it. How would you miss that when it should be really obvious if you playtest her in more than 1 hive.
That and TC being dishonest about so many things taught me to always expect the worst
Works on all maps, I have done all on master already and it took ages. To have this rubbish in the game is stupid, Get it fixed @TC_Sera
Because improving AI is difficult, time consuming, and (most importantly) not necessarily the right way to go. Devs make AI stupid for a reason, if they were able to wallbounce around the map perform synchronized swimming maneuvers we’d be screwed
Now they can definitely improve some of the enemies to better challenge players (Grenadiers are an obsolute joke in this game as an example) but I don’t think the solution is smarter AI.
Ugh too true. I played Feral horde in 4 recently and was surprised that I almost got frag tagged. They moved fast and pushed up to rush you a lot and now in 5 they have the least lethal but most annoying grenade, don’t even have the boltoks like they did in 4, and are just so stupid. There’s no difference between the normal grenadier or elites movements besides the flashbang throwing. They all move like they’re stuck in sludge.
I just wanted to mention that TC’s approach to balance is worse in Versus than it is in PvE, TC apparently thinks Gears should play like CoD or Halo, with that being said I will address the typical PvE “balancing” argument.
The vast majority of games do balancing tweaks, yes even in PvE. The reason? Because having 1 strategy that gives you an easy or “free” win isn’t fun long term. Marcus is a great example of something so good its awful. Imagine you are new to the game right, you for whatever reason wanted to play as Marcus, the sad thing about this class/character is that it basically just encourages you to be stupid/bad at the game. Aiming, reloading, even basic stuff like dodging are all irrelevant because the class is so broken that it just encourages you to be awful at the game. Its fun for brief periods of time but if either play as Marcus or even have them on your team you’re going to get extremely bored after a few games.
To give another example of something that was stupid OP in Gears PvE the Silverback ala Gears 3 is another perfect example, pretty much meant every match would play exactly the same, the difficulty with giving players options (fortifications, cards, perks, etc.) is that if you fail as a developer to make them equal then you’ve really not given them anything as players are basically ham-fisted into making certain choices.
On a larger note the topic of “balance” is really quite small compared to larger topics like difficulty or fun or depth, so you can create a game that is perfectly balanced and it still be trash. Gears of War 3’s loadouts were very well balanced, doesn’t mean it was fun lol.
thank you for agreeing with me
I’m not arguing no balancing has to be done, but if I’m the only person using say, Kait’s or Lizzie’s class in a match, I don’t want to get the short end of the stick because some guy on the other side of the world can use 5 of that class in a match.
