Ahh’, good to know. I was under the impression that you’ve never touched the original trilogy before.
It is unfortunate that there’s a bypass for earning cosmetics with just opening your wallet. Maybe it’s a select group of people who’ve requested to buy it up-front, but that’s no reason to offer them up like that unless the majority of the fans are voicing their unified decision for that. I assure you that most of the people who’re complaining about the current unlockables are complaining because this is a sorry excuse for unlocking requirements and they’d like to see it changed in a way that’ll make it so that they’ll be able to earn these characters from playing the way they want.
Just as @Rampage_xyz stated, you could unlock the majority of your characters through linear progression and by playing the game modes you wanted. Hell, 20 of the characters were earned just from leveling up. They were fan favorites too like Sam, COG Gear, Dizzy, Anthony C, Benjamin C, Clayton C, Classic Baird, Classic Dom, Hoffman, Beast Rider, Theron Guard, Grenadier, Flame Grenadier, etc. They were characters that people wanted, which led to a healthy progression system. The more flashy/rewarding characters were locked behind medals that were challenging, but obtainable. Get 100 headshots for Locust Sniper, get 150 revives for Kantus, get MVP in 100 matches for Superstar Cole, play 200 matches for Classic Marcus, beat campaign on any difficulty for Unarmored Marcus, etc.
We didn’t mind the grind in GoW3 because we already had a guaranteed roster from just playing the game however way we wanted to play it (Campaign, Versus, Horde, Beast, etc). If we wanted to go the extra mile for the grindable characters, we could do that because a fair amount of content and characters were only hiding behind a specific level that we needed to reach by doing any activity that GoW3 offered. Hell, we could even grind for the extra characters while leveling up at the same time, in turn receiving more and more characters.
That’s true that encouraging players to try out other modes isn’t a bad thing, but if there’s this much backlash towards these Versus/Horde/Escape challenges, I’m sure the majority of the people bellyaching over it have already given the modes a try, only to find out that they dislike them. It’s rather lazy that the Totems all have identical challenges, but can only be equipped one at a time, only increasing the stale grind that we want to avoid from the repetitive modes. I agree that it’s a good addition though, but I feel like it could’ve been implemented better, as I feel about everything in GoW5.
I can also agree with you on the RNG lootboxes. They weren’t any better than this system. In fact, they were worse, but I can see why people prefer them because they supplied everyone with character, weapons skins and a hefty amount of scrap if we received duplicates, which could be used to craft your favorite characters/weapon skins that you want. I understand why you feel that way though, but I know that the way they’re going about these unlockables isn’t right, and it’s definitely not the type of unlockables that everyone had asked for.
- Agreed. Being able to purchase unlockable characters outright strip the value of the character immensely.
- Agreed. Would be nice if there was worthwhile customization items to work towards though, because there’s certainly a lack of in-game unlockables, which make the Totem system even worse and infuriating for players.
- Agreed. It’s a shame that the majority of the campaign characters are locked behind the ToD, which is completely asinine and unforgivable.
- Agreed.
- Agreed. Amen to that!
- Agreed. More ways to unlock cosmetics would be a better system, or just give us objectives that are achievable throughout all modes, like getting a certain amount of revives, executions, headshots, kills, etc (Not Eliminations. F*ck Eliminations).
