Ive played a few koth matches on 4 lately just to go back and see. Quite honestly the game play is much smoother and fluid in 5 regardless of whether you like the movement speed. Quite frankly, 5 doesnt feel any faster. It even feels clunkier. Chainsaw is clunkier. Wrapping cover is clunkier. The only thing I prefer is the gib range. Gibs in 4 feel a little more “natural”. I think if TC went to 4’s gib distance, you wouldnt have people complaining about 99%"s so much.
I know I might be crucified for saying that I actually loved Gears 4.
For me they really made the gameplay so smooth and the Gnasher play didn’t feel like total bs, gib range and poke was awesome.
In Gears 5 it’s either you gib right away or die. No poking for me makes me feel like the gameplay is less skillful.
Not only that it makes it harder for newcomers to keep the wall bouncing sweats at bay when they can just run to close the gap for insta-death.
Not gonna lie that Gears 4 had some issues, but for me the gameplay was perfect.
I got to be honest, i had a bit of a hard time following your post. I cant tell if you are praising 4 or 5. Obviously 5 doesn’t feel faster as its a much slower game. And the reason people complain about 99%'s is because its possible in 5 and not in 4 (one shot). There will always be a threshold no matter the gib range. Bring it in closer or make it further and the same stuff will happen. In 4 it was just masked by the damage boost. 83% was the 99%.
I’m not complaining
But EYS, 120% better
@BetaX2r I understand their will always be a gib threshold. In 4, the gib range is larger, meaning imo, people die at a distance they should die from a close range shotgun blast. The gib range in 5 is too small. Shots that would be gibs in 4 result in 99% in 5.
As far as praise, we can debate faster/slower movement in 5 all day long. But setting that aside, the gameplay mechanics are more fluid. You can hold a chainsaw and walk normally with it without having your body swing side to side like in 4. Your cover slips and wall wraps are much smoother and more fluid. And the guns feel better. 4 is just clunky. Sorry but it is.
@CaptanCalamarii your not gonna get crucified. 4 took a beating for the first few years, but yet now somehow its far superior to 5 and was always amazing.
Everything was better in 4 lol except for the campaign… wasn’t a fan of Acts 2 and 3 mind you(the open world aspect anyways, of course the end of 2 was nice lore stuff) but overall 5’s campaign was better… but Hivebusters was better than both, despite being way shorter than both lmao.
Edit: actually I take it back… granted Guardian is better in 4 because it’s ranked… I do honestly prefer the changes they made to it in 5 with the leader ability(that you have to use sparingly instead of just being able to watch map whole time) and spawn swap to prevent getting too cozy.
@KC_JAY_1986 People have lots of reasons personally to dislike 5.(in their own minds). Abysmal state at launch. Heavy heavy aim assist at launch. Character locks in Horde. Campaign characters only available through a battle pass system or real $. Thats fine. All legit things for some people to have a red a** over in their heads. But again, setting that stuff aside, the gameplay and movement mechanics are a large step up from 4.
To each their own, but there’s other aspects I take into effect too, like the Boltok I’d destroy with on 4, that I no longer even pick up on 5… The Embar seems different to me too, granted I still pick it up and still do decent enough with it, but still feel like it feels different to me. Don’t think I’ve even hit a collat on 5 yet lol hit several on 4.
Agree to disagree… All good man. Im of the opposite opinion and think the animations are one of the core things that has crippled 5 for some time. Until the last update, it was much harder to play reactionary as the visual ques of your enemy where much less telling. Momentum shifts in the enemy being a big one of them. In 4 you could see the weight of the character transfer from side to side when straffing for example, in 5 it is / was an instant shift that looks unnatural. Half the time when i die in 5, i sit there scratching my head trying to understand everything. Not to mention, a portion of the time the enemies gun fire doesn’t playback audio thus making it even more confusing. Even the dev’s i believe at some point implicitly acknowledged this (the momentum shifts of characters). Slowing the game down did indeed band aid that and make it a bit easier to track your enemy.
As @CaptanCalamarii pointed out 4 had the luxury of taking a shot and still being in the fight. 5, outside of bot walking is much harder to outplay the enemy once hit do to the lethargic nature of the gameplay. But you are right in saying we could debate gameplay all day long so there is no point going down that rabbit hole.
Ive said it before, but im one of the ones when jumping between the two games that think 4 looks and moves better. One example of this is the coloring of the enemies. In 5 i have a much harder time telling who is who. The definition of the characters clothes and colors are much less telling.
@BetaX2r thats interesting…in 4 i cant tell whos who 3/4 of the time. No visible red or blue anywhere. Only when marked is it obvious who is on what team. And 1 other thing I didnt say earlier…I really thought the audio cues when an enemy was approaching from behind in 5 were bad. But 4 makes 5’s rear audio sound like its playing through dolby digital surround. 4’audio cues are atrocious. Flat out garbage. I got shot from behind umpteen times and never heard them coming at all. It is some of the worst rear audio ive ever experienced in a video game ever. And in 5 you adhere so much better to walls and can run along walls sp much better. I do like the lancer audio and feel better in 4.
@KC_JAY_1986 I agree with you on the boltok. Its useless. A hand camnon should 1 shot down with a headshot. Its hard to down anyone with 4 shots in 5. The snub is more useful than the boltok in 5. Ive never reallyliked the embar in either game. Its not that fun for me to use. I dont like the charge mechanic. Its very annoying to try to line up a shot only to have it overcharge a millisecond before your shot is open. You can 1 shot a head with the longshot…and it has no “punishment” for using it like the overcharge mechanic of the embar. Dont really understand why its a mechanic for the gun. But whatevs.
Sounds cues aren’t great in either game IMO so i somewhat agree with you there. However, the overall sound design is much fuller in 4 than 5. 5 is very thin… The slide sound and lancer are prime examples.
Everything in 4 is better
For the last game in the Gears of War series, Gears of War 4 is great in it’s current form.
