Am I the only one who thinks loot boxes were a good feature?

It may sound bad from the title, but hear me out;

When Gears 4 had the loot boxes, I never minded it. You could either pay for it, or buy them with real money.

In Gears 5, you have NO choice to get the skins from the store. LITERALLY NO CHOICE other than buying them.

Now, in my opinion, that’s absolutely scummy. For people who only have enough to pay their bills, it sucks.

I LOVE saving up credits in a game, and just buying heaps of crates at a time just for the satisfaction of it.

Gears 4? Saved up credits.
Madden? Saved up credits,
Gears 5? Just play for rank. That’s it. Just it. Nothing more, nothing less. It sucks.

Now, for people that have extra money for micro transactions, this is perfect. They can buy what they want, and they don’t have to go through RNG boxes to get the item after wasting money extra items they don’t want/need.

I love knowing I can get the same skins as someone who bought them just by grinding. I like the options they give.

Makes me feel more accomplished that they just paid for the easy route while I actually played the game for it.

I can see why they won’t add loot boxes back with that new law or whatever it was that was passed for RNG boxes, but they need to do something about this store issue. I can’t stand seeing other people with a skin that’s behind a paywall. Not that a skin makes a game make or break, but it’d be nice to have them in my collection if they were ever to get removed from the game as companies like to do.

The reason I made this topic was because of the new Rainbow Wave Lancer.

I hate these games copying Fortnite’s CANCEROUS weekly item system; NBA LIVE 19, Gears 5, and others.

It’s such a bad system that drip feeds content to their customers to keep them attracted to the game for longer.

I like the ToD system, they just don’t give enough rewarding skins. But the store on the other hand…

They give out REALLY good skins so it nudges you in the direction of “Well, I have $10 left over… Ah, what the hell? The skin looks nice!”

Maybe it’s just me who feels this way as I haven’t seen anyone else talk about this. Let me know your thoughts!

EDIT: I meant to add this is in before posting, but I want this to be crystal clear to all whom read this post.

I want this feature to be in-game currency crates only. No real money involved. As it would be just like Gears 4

I completely agree with you .
I had no problem with 4’s MT system. I found it fairly balanced and affordable. But people complained, and now we have a system far worse.

Now everyone’s ok with the loot boxes after whining incessantly for 3 years. And you wonder why they don’t pay attention to the forums for feedback.

When gears 6 drops you’ll be doing the same with 5

having in game currency that was easy to earn was a good feature

At the end of Gears 4 gear packs, they were offering RNG for credits, or the option of buying the characters and weapons directly with no RNG. This, I think, was a fair set up.
I would like to see a return the credits through gameplay. Would make the prices more tolerable.

I’m not speaking for others. I’m speaking mainly for myself. I liked the feature in Gears 4, and the other’s that disliked it I guarantee you were the ones who bought the boxes 24/7 and hated the RNG of them. 100%.

EDIT: Just now noticed I responded to the wrong person. Meant to respond to Noodie 5.

Yeah better than the current system IMO

The loot boxes were fine for the free content, it was the Black Steel and weapon skins people were complaining about. $10 for a chance to get what you want is ridiculous.

With this new system 3 things need to happen

1 - more ways to earn iron
2 - lower prices on items
3 - Chrome steel and esports return to real money not iron

Paid RNG was absolute cancer in Gears 4. Stuff did eventually come up for direct purchase, which is how it should have been from the start.

The earnable credit/scrap system with featured packs bringing in new content that would eventually be released in the general item pool in 4 was far better than 5’s Tour of Duty garbage. Duplicates within the same pack and general pricing issues plagued the credit system early on, but they were addressed fairly quickly.

Overall, Gears 4 had a pretty good content delivery system. I would have preferred if Gears 5 had a split between Gears 4’s feature pack credit/general pool system, and more traditional medal-style unlocks in the same vein as Gears 3.

Gears 5 can still be salvaged. If the Tour of Duty system expands on itself every season instead of resetting and locking old content, it would be an enormous improvement. Let everyone get all the content and medals any time they want, just add new higher ranks, content, and medal challenges as time goes on.

Yes, but actually no (memeing). Seriously, though. I like the ToD system, I’d just like a system that can get me skins somewhat as quickly as you can buy them. Meaning, I don’t want to spend 24 hours grinding for 1 skin. Example:

If they did add an iron per match system, based off of their past issues with imbalances, how much do you they think they would give based off your performance like MVP for a paid currency? 20? 30? Woah. Slow down there, killer.

So, that means if you wanted to earn the “Get Hype Pack” You’d have to play 83 matches for ONE offer. Amazing
IF you had MVP each match, IF. How about this one though. What if you wanted Delivery Driver Mac too?

That’s an extra 34 games. And if you want the Chrome Steel Power skin pack? An extra 34 matches. A total of 151.

I’m not trying to sound like a ■■■■■■, but if you go off of TC’s past, they’re not generous, so if they ever did add this system, I’d assume they wouldn’t be giving away any 80 iron per game as that would lose them money.

Point is, at the rate they put content in the game, you’d have to grind your ■■■ off to even keep up with it, that is if you’re someone who likes to buy everything (with in-game currency, not real money, of course).

And I see you deleted your message. Weird.

Fair point about TC not being as benevolent as we’d want when it comes to rewarding people for playing. The past has shown as much, but I still stand by what I’ve previously stated about preferring the current system over the old, and much rather they stay away from anything RNG lootbox related in any system that they choose to add in this game.or any other Gears game.

Weird, I didn’t delete my comments. @GhostofDelta2 , have you or any other mod deleting my comment for x reason? Just curious.

This quote is from an article on IGN…

“Give it another couple of years, and we’re going to be drowning in these services and it’s going to force developers to build games with ‘how do I make money?’ in mind. Short narrative games will be forced out, we’ll be drowned in a sea of Fortnites and pachinko machines,” says Rose. “I know I must bore a whole lot of people with this stuff but god, we’re just so on the cusp of a crash, and I feel like barely anyone realizes it.”

The article is titled (if anyone wants to read it) “Developers Raise Alarm Over Their Cut of Google Play Pass’ Subscription Money”.

I find that quote speaks for itself, as it covers how the game industry as a whole is going towards.

I can’t delete nor see deleted comments, so no idea on that sorry mate.

That’s cool. I was just wondering the reason so that I can “behave” myself even though the deleted posts were mild and non-aggressive. Oh well, it is what it is.

I never minded the loot boxes, I did like having the choice to earn credits or to buy them, oits nice to have a choice

You are not missing the Loot boxes you are missing the chance to earn GameCredits witch is what this game have missed.

This game give you absolutely nothing for play it besides tour duty
(witch most content are useless banners and sprays)

I mean dailys and medals are ok…if you ignore the ridiculous requirements of some of them like winning in certain maps. Man I’ve been stucked with “winning in asylum” like for three days.

Nothing for winning a match, or playing campaign, even for the reup you only get ONE SINGLE SKIN at ReUp two and a blood Sprays for the first one.
(this is so ridiculous ,because the boost xp , witch they also sell in store , has no reason to be)

This game could use a system where your can earn 10 iron for wining a match, or 30 for complete horde, don’t know.
So you can purchase things in store without the RNG system.

You don’t want to grind? Cool, you can also buy iron, best of two world’s simple as that.

loot boxes are fine until suddenly there’s 10 different types of them, along with 3 types of currency and the developers overload the game with garbage content specifically to the populate the item pools.

Everybody was mostly crying about the esports supporter packs, where you could spend 500 dollars and still not have all the skins. The old system was better for f2p much easier skins and scrap.

No no, I like the loot boxes, and the per-match iron thing, but if you read my message above from me talking about the per-match Iron system, you’d see why it would still suck even if it was added as that’s exactly how it would go based off of TC’s bad history of unbalances.

I don’t know. Just something about grinding hours, and hours, and hours saving THOUSANDS of credits, then spend them on crates. And I don’t want crates like you think. I want crates that have very, very good chances of getting higher tier skins like say Delivery Driver Mac as it’s a purple tier. So it would have a 20% chance to drop.

Oh, and no duplicates of higher rarity (purple - gold/yellow) as there’d be no point of getting a good skin when you could just re-open the crate over and over again to get infinite scrap.

The supply drop system they have in place now is cool and all, but 1. The items they give you are horrible because they’re base items, and all the good items are in the store. 2. You earn these drops MUCH too slow, like, too slow.

No. Real money RNG Lootboxes is one of the worst things in gaming - right behind Pay to Win. Paying for the chance at an item is a scam, offering us the item with an outright cost is much better.

However, with Gears 5’s micro-transaction store TC have gotten very f***ing greedy and they need to change their current prices and/or amount of skins. A single Lancer Skin for £5?! That’s nuts, especially if you want the full set for the 20 odd weapons. Gears 3 micro-transactions will probably be the fairest skin prices we’ll ever see.

The only issue for the free content right now is that they’re all locked behind huge grind walls and the content is very limited, you don’t even get the full weapon skin set! At least with Gears 3’s progression system and medals you knew each medal would unlock 1 item for you.

I’m assuming free content will start to get better after a few months. But tbf I doubt TC will be able to retain that many players anyway unless they fix all the issues asap!
