Sekiro deserved it 100%.
I love how the only time Gears 5 was mentioned during the Game Awards, it didn’t even get a reaction lmao.

Why on Earth are we using TGA as a gold metric?
Perhaps, but DEFINITELY I don’t think it was a clear-cut or instantaneous decision.
GOTY is a hard to thing to qualify and quantify in an industry that doesn’t have genre standardization nor metrics. In fact, without any of the things I mentioned or will mention, GOTY is extremely hard to nominate for, and virtually impossible to narrow down a winner. It’s essentially arbitrary, like the professional reviews y’all covet.
For one thing, GOTY should be the game with the biggest impact – bare minimum qualifier; I don’t think the impact of Sekiro overshadowed the other big fish this year.
And, at the time of its release, I gathered that impressions of the game were that it was one of the better – if not one of the best – of the “Souls-like” and “Tenchu-descendant” games (considering its pedigree, makes sense), and highly refined and competent, but not altogether a redefinition of its overall genre space. It had its fair share of problems.
I could go on, but I think the point is made sufficiently far enough.
DLC is “free”, in the form of Operations & Tour of Duty updates (seasons), as well as new unlockable characters within a season.
I MEAN FoR SEKIROOOOO!
