A good gears game

We cared about the locust without really knowing much

I mean that depends on the person (much like everything else in existence) I care about how the Locust came to existence, Myrrah, Raam, and Skorge.I care about their religion and how they ran their population. Most of this stuff due to them being fleshed out more with Myrrah being the only one the games actually got me to care about (I guess their existence too)

I know I care more than what I’m saying (locust wise) as otherwise I wouldnt have fallen in love with the franchise just cant think of any

The Swarm so far I Care about how they became like that (snatchers, crystallization, etc.), and Queen Reyna only because of

A. Tactics giving slightly more info on Reyna and

B. I’m pretty sure that its Myrrah just in Reynas body

Ill prolly care the Swarm version of JD/Del too cause that’s my gut feeling on how they’re gonna go with it but the Swarms motive is just “our ancestors lost so we’re gonna be different” and for me to care about them any more that’s gonna need to change/have more substance

I enjoyed 5s story and really appreciated TC bringing some judgement lore back. Seeing paduk still alive made me happy. But huge missed opportunity not telling us what happened to Sofia. 6 is most likely gonna be the best of TC’s trilogy because they finally have enough of the swarm built up.

I know its assumed shes dead based on what is said in aftermath. But I want to know why the supposed cog soldiers took her and what exactly they did.

Sofia’s fate still hasn’t been confirmed IIRC. Paduk only mentions her getting kidnapped and him saying “he dropped these” with one of the guys he shot down presumably being an Onyx Guard due to the tags he gives Baird.

I’d like to think that she was kidnapped to defend Azura or something rather than the worst, but knowing Gears EU that’s probably the case.

Inb4 tc retcons it to have been a group of swarm dressed as onyx guards. And they stole Sofia because they needed a Queen.

I’m OK with getting a sequel trilogy, as I think prequels are better off as a single, self-contained story (e.g. Judgement). It’s the delivery of said sequel that I wasn’t too fond of. Look, Gears games have never presented the most gripping stories out there - they just kind of get the job done, and characters are pretty one-dimensional (doesn’t necessarily translate to bland or unlikable). That being said, the original trilogy knew its guns and stuck to 'em. Dark, gritty, depressing, brutal; every aspect of the games handed those themes to you on a bloody platter. It had an identity.

But take that away, and there’s not much under the hood - which is exactly what I found out when I played Gears 4. The characters that I loved were now on the backbench (which I’m also fine with) but the main characters replacing them lacked that Gears charm. They weren’t battle-hardened, roided veterans is what I’m trying to say. Add to that the change in art direction. The worst looking parts of Gears 4 seemed to incorporate every element of the new art style (blue and yellow, clean industrial/futuristic garbage) such as much of Act 1, whereas the best looking parts were the times where TC payed the most homage to the original art style (dark and gritty with old stone buildings) like most of Act 2-4. It felt jarring, like building an office block next to an old cathedral. Gears 5 rectified this to some extent, but much of my gripes remained the same, and the switcheroo to Kait as lead mid-trilogy - as well as the dumb multiple-choice ending - demonstrates a clear lack of direction in the story department. Not to mention Kait is the epitome of everything a Gears character shouldn’t be.

So the new characters aren’t hitting any of those old Gears themes I mentioned, nor is the new art style, or the downgraded gore, or the designs of most of the Swarm. In an attempt to set the two trilogies apart, TC’s simply chipped away at the series’ identity, which is a shame since a new trilogy is the perfect opportunity to do the opposite. But to be honest, story-wise, after Gears 3’s ending I don’t think TC could’ve done anything without it sounding like just an excuse to shoot more bad guys.

Idk how you can play 5 and say there was no tension or chemistry between characters. Kaits entire story is pretty much that.

I get why people didn’t like the #metoo movement female lead direction. But character development was still good regardless if you like the character.

Thats just the internet for you, everything in the past was better and everything new sucks, even though the writing, acting, animation, visuals and well …everything has improved, nothing is like the original. Original titles always get more praise due to it being new and from a psychological point, people build up expectations beyond what can be achieved, people don’t realize what made the others so memorable to them was that it was fresh.

I think God of War is a good example. The older ones were amazing, but the newest one did excellent as well, but its because its had a huge overhaul, the camera changed to over the shoulder, were no longer in Greek mythology, etc, the gears formula needs to change some, God of War was getting old and they brought it back with flying colors.

Got a little off topic but my main point is gears needed to move forward and I think it still could use some new additions to spice up campaign.

Maybe it’s a matter of preference then.
Maybe I just don’t find them charismatic enough to care about their arcs (new characters).

At least you’re straight up about it.

I will admit I didn’t care for Kait’s character at first at all, but she really grew on me in 5. She really showed interesting development and really became a dynamic character. The only thing she said that made me cringe was “Screw your orders.” It really should’ve been f u c k your orders.

Better designs would help.

They literally look like they’re wearing scraps of metal in Gears 5. And not in a cool, cleanly designed way either. Just grab plate, smash onto head and bend to make a cone-shaped helmet.

That’s why no one uses them. They’re too messy. They protrude points and weird angles and their asthetic is literally covering themselves in trash.

The Locust (even the damn Savage Locust) still looked like they were a military force – something the Swarm are missing.

Now those proto-Locust in the New Hope facility? They were on the right track with their own spin on an old design.

How does it prove that?

Yea, I’d hope in gears 6 they have new designs. Them being like that in 5 make sense though as they gained a Queen mid war so it’d make sense for them just to make some makeshift armor just to fight a little better. I think 6 needs a time skip and a character dump, both new Cog people and Swarm lieutenants imo
