A good gears game

Tactics is actually a really good gears game and proves that TC went the wrong direction with the new trilogy.

How did they go in the wrong direction??

Well the environments in Gears Tactics are great, they don’t consist of steel plating coated in that clashing yellow/blue combo. Everything doesn’t look sterile clean, it looks like war has ravaged the planet.

Character designs are decent, Sid fits right in, Gabe is cool, Reyna doesn’t look ugly. Though I actually thought Gears 5 did well with character designs, especially compared to GoW4.

Gore and executions seem more like Gears and less toned down etc.

I havent played Tactics yet and it does look great from what Ive seen but your response wasnt what I thought OP meant.

I thought he was talking about story but I could be wrong

Good stories are ended with GoW3.
But personally, for me, the story in Gears game is as good as its dialogs are written.
The whole plot may be meh (as GoW1 was) but dialogs and characters were still solid 8/10. You can feel tension and chemistry inside the original Delta squad. GoW4 and 5 had none of it honestly.
Characters and dialogs is what important to the franchise. New trilogy lacks both for me. I’m surprised that no one’s talking about how they dull down Baird for example.

As for Tactics. Characters are decent, I guess. Sid is the most well-acted character for sure.
Noshir Dalal (Gabe/Charles Smith) had nothing to work with IMO. Gabe seems ok, does not irritate for the most part, but I didn’t feel that I knew him somewhat well by the end of the story. There is nothing that I can point out about him. He is… a soldier. A good one, Long story short - he is too generic.

I enjoyed the dialog in Gears 5 personally. To each their own

I dont think they dulled Baird down that much. Hes still the sarcastic assh%le that he was but hes on his element now so he just seems happier

Im glad than that I read Bloodlines before I play Tactics. He has a really good story in it

This is exactly what I wanted to talk about.
You don’t need to read additional literature about Marcus or Dom or Cole to know them well.
An extended universe is always a plus for any game. Especially if you want to know more or want to stay with characters for a little bit longer.
But that doesn’t mean that you can neglect them in games hoping that some hired writer do it for you.
It’s like lazy writing, but without writing.

Well I do have some gripes with the story but its OK, there’s a Locust who vapes.

Nah for real, I didn’t mind the story, perhaps just TC doubling down on the origins of the Locust. Maybe showcase a bit more of the war and other squads fighting etc.

But it wasn’t bad and Gabe is a cool character.

Tactics isnt as good as 5 imo its turn based!!!

I highly disagree, Coles motivations are added upon in the books and explains why he’s friends with Baird ( because he’s an ■■■ hole at first) . We get why Marcus is in prison and why Hoffman still has a ton of respect for him. Marcus and Anya are built upon, and Sam + Bernie are introduced properly(gears 3 just kinda threw them in) the books fill a lot of holes on the original trilogy.

Making a sequel trilogy forcing the swarm to be a thing completely ruining the ending of 3 and making everything we went through in the og 3 games basically pointless because the locust never lost. They just evolved.(locust evolving is kinda cool ngl but still

this is about 4,5 and 6 not tactics. Tactics is the right direction TC should’ve went. Story wise. I enjoy the turn based game but obviously I mean TC should’ve went the prequel route for the story of the new trilogy. Expanded on the og 3 games and gave new context and meaning to those games and the lore

I like having more stuff in the locust war, but things needed to move forward otherwise it would have gotten stale or just run out of posable side stories. If we already experienced the climax of the locust war (end of 3) all the other stories are just filler from that point if we stay in the past.

I only play to the game. It makes long time so I can miss remembrer, but Marcus is on prison because he refuse to follow some order, no ? He did something moral but not legal.

No it was wrong both ways spoiler

Summary

In the book "the slab" Marcus does refuse orders to go and try to save his dad (dumb of his dad to broadcast a goodbye over coms ) it ended up getting a lot of gears killed and losing them the battle. He was supposed to get some gears holding a bridge a hammer of dawn targeting device, (i forget what the device is called specifically) without the hammer those gears end up getting overrun.``Preformatted text

My previous message give only one type of answer. Refuse follow order is the not legal but moral thing.

Answer to the spoiler

And what you describe fit my previous message. “wrong” is said to avoid spoiler or I misunderstood some point ?

I do not know if we learn the detail, but pretty sure that Gears of War 3 told us about Marcus refusing to follow the order to save is father. Marcus and Dom talking about this when they are in the Phenix residence.

I dont look at like that. Everything that happened in that time lead to a rebuilding phase on Sera, it also lead to a time of peace that most people on Sera never knew until the end of 3.

Also Epic were gonna do something with the Swarm as well. We dont know what exactly though just that that was the direction Epic was gonna go with

Not hating on the idea because it’s TC. Hating on it because there’s so much lore the could’ve went into like they did with tactics and gowj. Epic probably would’ve done a worse job considering the way the company went. Most unnecessary sequels just don’t feel right

Im not saying you dont like the Swarm because TC went along with it. I understand where you are coming from.

Me personally I like the idea that TC is trying to build upon. Also I think 1 of the biggest issues people have with the Swarm is they dont feel like they are as big of a threat as the locust,

I would love more Locust Era stories myself. But theres only so much they can do with it in regards to bringing new things into the Gears Lore. Judgment did a great job explaining the Ragers but theres only so many times that can be used

Swarm origins are admittedly contrived (we still dunno how the crystalization works), but then again so are lots of things with Gears during the Epic saga.

I personally appreciate Gears 5’s direction with an unexpected protag and being a sequel with lots of added lore to the Pendulum Wars past. Gears 5 has some of the best collectibles in the series rivalling 2 and 3.

I think it was time to move on from the Locust, while I’m fine with spinoffs continuing the Locusts I felt the main games did right by moving on. They just need to actually flesh out the Swarm before 6 (not after). How can people care about something they know very little about
